honestly, that thing makes no sense to me, but if others like it, as long as it calculates the CR correctly and produces a text-based ship, knock yourselves out.

agreed, it should be:

[X] [X] [X] [-] [-] [-]

Thanks for catching that

Since the Admiralty Edition has changed the way we think about starships, I think it's time to update the Drake Notation for the Bourbaki Basin.

in general, the less information on the card, the better, except where defaults are concerned (then I'd like to see them spelled out like ST:X i.e. ROF 1 would be explicitly identified rather than assumed)

Here goes, whaddya think?

<Starship_Name>
(<Combat_Rating>)<Class_Name> <Class_Designation> [<Race_designation>]
Hull: <N> <N-1> <N-2> ... 1
Engines: <N> <N> <N> <N> ...
Shields: <N> <N> <N> <N> ...
Weapons:  [X|Y|Z|-] [X|Y|Z|-] [X|Y|Z|-] [X|Y|Z|-] [X|Y|Z|-] [X|Y|Z|-]

[X] <Weapon_Type>, <RNG_1>/<RNG_2>/RNG_3>, <ACC>, <ROF>/<IMP>/<DMG>

[Y] <Weapon_Type>, <RNG_1>/<RNG_2>/RNG_3>, <ACC>, <ROF>/<IMP>/<DMG>

[Z] <Weapon_Type>, <RNG_1>/<RNG_2>/RNG_3>, <ACC>, <ROF>/<IMP>/<DMG>

Specials: <Specials_List>

Fighters:
<Fighter_Name>: (Capacity), <Size>/<Speed>/<Attack>/<Defense>, <Traits_List>

And an example

(277) Dumbo-Class DreadNose [Elephantine]
Hull: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
Engines: 3 3 3 2 2 2 1 1
Shields: 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 1
Weapons: X / X / Y / Y / Y / Z
[X]  Super Charger, 4/8/12, 5+, 1/2/1, Extra Hull Damage
[AB] [AB]
[Y]  Stomp Gun, 2/4/6, 3+, 4/1/1, Extra Hull Damage
[A] [B] [E] [F]
[Z]  Sonic Cannon, 10/20/30, 5+, 1/1/1, No Hull Damage
[G]
Specials: Hyperdrive; Armor Plating; Marines (14)

Bravo!

If there's a weapon trait in Starmada that is more filled with cheese than inverted range modifiers, I have yet to see it.

I wish I had spoken louder when the questions about what are essential traits came about, but there you are.

is rpgnow even working?

edit, apparently they've fixed the database, but the speed still sucks

inertia can be indicated by a note in the "Notes" section if you want to be facing a different direction that you're heading, simply indicate 1-6 in the notes section and that's the direction you're GOING (i.e. not "heading")

but that may be too simplistic.

the lookup function in excel requires an alphabeticalized list, you'll get odd results unless you alphabetize it

yes, pm me for an updated version and please send me the spreadsheet

actually, anyone who wants it can take it for playtesting.

I have to warn you all tho, nothing has changed about the magic system or ranged weapons

one thing that I thought was intereting is that you thought ranged weapons were kludgy.

I'm not saying they aren't kludgy, but maybe you can help make them less so? Ideas?

Fair retelling. Esp. of the first 900 lines of the poem or so.

Devin said "3d boobs rock!"

I agree.

A single element is fairly ineffective (and that's a design decision we made) so putting all your points into one mini is probably not the best decision smile

The other look like they're mostly within reason for the undead, they tend to be more expensive and hard to kill, so you generally need less of them.

Personalities tend to be the motivators on the field, not the fighters. given an equal amount of points in personalities and ina well-balanced unit, I'll take the unit.  We've don some play testing and the high-point monsters and leaders just can't withstand the horde.

I do really like that wasting spell, tho, esp the x3 aspect, it would make a well-placed attack against even the most worthy foe a cake walk.

That's quite an honor to be lumped in with the likes of Starmada! Thank you

Morale for Personalities.  Maybe make it cheap so its easy to be 'heroic',
but generals running can be critical. Remember Darius?

That will take some thought

More attack dice available on the spreadsheet.   An artillery unit with 3d for attack, can only destroy one element, best case scenario. A missle hero with 3d can only inflict one wound per attack (2 if he carries over a half and attacks twice.)

We've been toying with the idea that multi-hex units can 1) band together into units according to the size of the base (e.g. arty can put up to 4 elements) and/or 2) roll the number of hexes x attack dice to attack (i.e. arty would roll 3 x attack dice to attack.

I have a table written down somewhere that shows that...

GhengisRexx wrote:

Is it possible to use the Wasting spell x3 in a single cast to reduce all the wounds in a unit by 3?

If so, would that kill an entire unit of wound 3 elements?

The text of the spell says:

If a unit is carrying wounds already and one less wound would kill the unit, than remove it from play as if it had died in combat. The carried wounds are also removed normally.

I would say, and I defer to Noel in this case because he is the one who really invented magic, that this bit pretty much is completely ambiguous and hard to understand and for that I apologize.

The way it reads is that it would reduce the UNIT to 0 wounds. for 12 MP

I would suggest that this would remove the UNIT. 12 mp is tough to get.

Is this unbalancing in your games? if so, how would you fix it?

GhengisRexx wrote:

IF Area of effect is part of a spell, will it effect an entire unit if it covers a single element?

for example, if a spell called "Darken the Sky with Missiles, then we'll fight in the shade" has the "strike" and "AOE" factors, then any damage done to a single element is done to the whole unit. Again, can we get an example and we'll figure out what to do with it from there?

GhengisRexx wrote:

If a spell effects a target rather than a hex, is it necessary to bump up the AOE twice to get a 7 hex area? ( the rules say that the first increse is from a target to a hex)

yes, but (guess what) can we get an example?

GhengisRexx wrote:

one more question- Do casters have to maintain the Animate spell every turn?

Absolutely!

Thus it costs them the MP AND at least one command point for the maintanance and possibly another command to carry over extra MP.

Awesome questions!  any thoughts on the rest of it?  or better yet, some army lists?

EDIT

I found a docking program that returns os x to it's wonderous-ness called "Dock-It"

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11108

/EDIT

I give the new OS a 5/10. UPDATE It's now a 6/10 with Dock-It...

I noticed an improvement in OS speed and my g5 fans no longer spin at god awful jet engine speeds.  I don't know if the speed is a RAM upgrade thing or an OS thing, but I put the RAM in a few days before the upgrade so I'm thinking the OS is actually faster now that it's had a chance to index everything.

The fan view in the finder is cool. But kind of irrelevant to a real computer user. Tho having thumbnails of the pictures is nice.

I doubt I'll ever use the time machine thing.

Spaces might take some getting used to. I tried to use it, but my graphics card is just a wee bit too slow for it to be seamless.

However, I would wait until the very last minute for the leopard upgrade and here's why...

They really messed with the Dock something fierce. And they're ignoring or won't talk about it at all.

Let's just say this new Stacks business is a serious step backwards for real Mac users.

My advice to anyone is wait until they bring back the functionality we've come to love.

And I am a real Mac FANatic too. I'll let you know when it's safe for human consumption. I'll get by, but I will look for a pre-leopard dock hack to bring back the real dock.

It is pretty, but I'd like to be able to change the look and feel...just a little. like different colored window graphics.

Oh well, hopefully they're listeneing to me... hello... is this thing on. Steve, buddy, it's a step backwards.
