Hello everyone, next month Feb 16 to 19 is MegaCon, a large SciFi & Gaming convention in Orlando, Florida.  I was planning to go and hoped to run several games of the New Version of Starmada.  Will the new game be ready soon enough before then?  I want to learn the rules, and make ships for games I will run at the convention.   It would be great to show everyone the new Starmada at MegaCon in Orlando next month.  8-)

A question:
If the escort that is blocking fire to an escorted ship has Stealth and is at long range from hostile ships, can it still block hostile fire and use its Stealth? That is, can it block fire at the ship it is escorting but not be fired on because it has stealth if the hostiles are at long range?

Credit Card?  Nice.  I am still counting pennies from my piggy bank.
Hmmmm, now do I send a pile of coins across the country...

Happy New Year everyone!
I was wondering when & how can we/I order the New version of Starmada? (Starmada Task Force Edition?)
I plan to order the PDF version so I can download and print the new rules asap.   I also want to order several books of these rules, to take with me gaming, and to give as gifts, etc.
Anxious, but hopefully not overly zealous here in Florida where it is a nice 70 degrees outside. :geek:
Cheers

I have been playing two or three  16to20-hull BB sized ships with shields 4, escorted by 4-hull DDs with shields one.  These DDs have "Laser Cannon" that have no piercing or any other special abilities.  They do have armored hull as do all of my other ships.  The DDs give extra firepower, especially more AA if needed.  All the weapons of the BBs & the DDs have range 18 & 3+ to hit.
I also have made 2-hull torpedo boats with higher speed and shorter-ranged "Torpedos" that do extra hull damage.  They stay at range, even using EM.  Then when the biggger ships are engaged, the rush in and fire their torpedoes.  These torps are "g" arc onlu, but have over thrusters.  I have not built any crusers in a long time.  I like BBs & DDs.  If I use fighters, I use the Long Range ones and don't have any carrier designs.
This usually works; but sometimes I win, sometimes I don't.  Just playing the game using ships I designed is a Great Deal of fun for me.

We banned strikers also.  A friend (GamingGlen) likes to put a flight of seekers on his ships and only launch them when the target is close and cannot move clear the next turn.  It is an interesting strategy...

Awesome!
I like the ability to turn at any part of the movement; that all ships in a line-ahead formation can turn in the same spot, not have to turn at the same time.  This allows ships in a Line-ahead formation to turn and maintain the line-ahead formation.  When I use my naval-style ships this will great.

I probably don't understand how the number of hull boxes is determined.  Is the size of a ship selected, then this size determines the number of hull boxes?  Can this number be changed?
I guess that armor is an added feature?
I look forward to the new edition and am sure I will understand how everything works when I see the new rules.   I was using some presumptions that probably are inaccurate.

The big challange for me is to  Patiently Wait  for the new Edition to appear, and not try to figure out all of the details beforehand.

(But my Adult ADD makes me want to ask about shields now, they work...  tongue)

Oic.  Hmmm, if the armor is going to be done like that, then what value, if any does armor have?  In this example, the 36 hull, no armor ship may be better because it would generate more repair units than the 27 hull armored ship.
I am curious, why is the armor broken up into three parts the same as the hull?  In many other games I have played the armor is marked off first, then the rest of the ship. (Examples are SFB, Full Thrust, Starfire)
 Would it be possible to have Ablative Armor?  This armor would all be hit before any hull gets hit.  It would work just like I thought the armor would work in the example from yesterday.  A while ago, in the days of Starmada X, I designed a ship with Ablative Armor and even placed a copy of it in the Boukari Basin, where it still is in the Starmada X files.  If armor worked like that, it would cost more.  For example, if the hull points cost 3 each, the ablative armor could cost 4 or 5.  This way a ship would get to delay its first threshhold check, but would cost a little more and may loose a repair party.

The weapon that gets two shots doing one damage would be somewhat more useful than a weapon that shoots once doing two damage.
 The weapon shooting twice would be better for AA fire against fighters, strikers, seekers, or when firing at flotillas.

If armor is not too much more costly than hull and takes up the same space, let me use this example to show its usefullness:
Ship A & Ship B both will have 36 'spaces" to devote to Hull & armor.  Ship A has 9 armor and 27 hull (arranged in three rows of 9).  This ship will have to take 18 points of damage before its first threshhold check is made.
Ship B has no armor, just 36 hull aranged in three rows of 12.  After taking only twelve hits, this ship will have its first threshhold.  If everything else on the inentically sized ships is the same, the armored one will take longer to threshhold, and may get another turn or two to fire its weapons before they get degraded. 8-)

I never used seekers; they are too inflexible.  I prefer the slightly more expensive Strikers.  The ability to move them as you want is very useful/ They ae similiar to the predator drones the US Military uses in Afghanastan.  Make them speed 15, accuracy 3+, give it halves shields and damage 3.  These strikers will be brutal and devestating...
Strikers are more effective than seekers or even fighters... 8-)

There are three or so books set in the Starfire universe by David(?) Webber.  They are excellent and it is fun to know the mechanics of how the weapons being fired in the books work.

I played Starfire for a long tine when I attended the University of Florida.  The earliest games with the basic weapons was a lot of fun.  It eventually got very complex...  The same thing happened to Star Fleet Battles.

That is one of the reasons I am addicted to Starmada.

Merry Christmas to you in Iowa and everyone else.

The new year is a week away.  May it be a greater year for everyone.  There is so much to look forward to:

The Primary season and Election of 2012; lots of fun and games as we go throu the uniquely USA facinating process of choosing a Chief executive for the next 4 years.  My friends in Canada have told me that they enjoy it more that we do.

Also there are many folk who think the world will end in just under a year(!)  These doomsayers believe that the Mayan Calander predicts this.  I guess that if the Long-gone, human-sacraficing Mayans' calander says it will be, then is must be  <RLOL> lol

But even more exciting is that the new version of Starmada is coming out.
I plan to make Federation, Klingon, and Romulan ships using the new system when i am back in Jacksonville.  I am going to get other players involved in regular play.  I know I can make this work.  The ease-of-play of the version will appeal to new players.

I am looking forward to a good 2012.  I realize that I can choose to make better, and not let circumstances prevent me from enjoying it .

I agree that there should be a place for "No Hull Damage" in the new edition (Starmada Task Force Edition).
 But this N-H-D weapon ability should Add some to the cost of the weapon, not subtract from its cost because it can cause double-threshold checks if used skillfully with other weapons...

madpax wrote about there being no ignore shields, ignore armore:
"I'm not glad at all. It would remove some Starfire weapons like Energy Beam (Ignore armor), Laser (ignore Shield) and Primary beam (ignore both)."

I used to play Starfire long ago.  Energy beam damage can be delt with using overload dampeners that absorb some of the damage.  To deal with laser beam hits, especially from fighters, ther was Laser-reflect armor that halved laser damage.  I think that these would overly complicate this new Edition of Starmada.  If you like these, the SAE version of the game is still ligit and these Starfire-type weapons can be used there.

The Weapon Abilities "Extra Hull Ability" and "Catastrofic Damage" would still be valad, but extra hull damage would now be the same as Double Damage...

I am excited about this new edition and really look forward to it.  My friends and I play with each player on a side having 2500 or even 3000 points.  It is fun, but sometimes the game boggs down a little from all of the dice rolling.  My ships have weapons that are 1/3+/1/1,2,3,4,or5 with Piercing or Starship exclusive on some of them.  This reduces the amount of dice I need to roll and makes my ships easier to play.
The new system looks great.  I look forward to playing it.  I am sure that most will like it once you see how it works.

My friends down here in S. Fla are playing Starmada on Monday Dec 26th at Noon at Gaming Glenn's excellent store near Fort Lauderdale.
PS:  I just got out of the pool  tongue  and am enjoying a S. Florida vacation...
Cheers

The ships can be printed four to a page on heavy paper.  Then cut them out to a size of 4" x 6" and either glue them to index cards or just leave them as cut outs.  You can then slip them into the sheet protectors that hold four of the 4x6 cards and use them that way when gaming.  You can mix and match.  I did this with the ships I made and used in the Space Combat "Full Thrust" that I used to play with Gaming Glen & My nephew.  (Once we discovered Starmada and began playing we abandoned Full Thrust.)

I am glad that the Starmada 2012 edition will Not have weapon traits that ignore shields or armor; Excellent!!!!!

I agree that Piercing +3 was a bit excessive.  Considering the high cost of Level 5 shields and the relatively low cost of Piercing +3, it made shields much less useful.  My friends and I have banned Piercing +3 and Ignores Shields.  Deleting these two along with Repeating and Strikers & Seekers has made for better games of SAE for us.

For those who like the SAE version, and want to use it for ships in one-on-one or other small battles, keep on using it!  For those who like a smoother system for larger battles, use this New one (Starmada Task Force Edition).

 I wonder if the ship designer program could allow for the design of ships of both editions in the same program.  The ship design program could have, in addition to the ship designing section, a part that translated the ship design into Starmada SAE ships and another part that shows the design in the newer Starmada STFE version.  That way the same ships can be used for a small battle, and as part of a larger task force.  Would this be practictal?

Will there be weapons abilities that Ingore Shields or Ignore Armor?

I still have my copy of the Starmada Compendium game.  It seems that the Starmada 2012 game (Starmada Task Force) will be using the terminology for the various weapon arcs that Starmada Compendium uses.   My friends and I used that version of the game for a long time before finally moving to These arcs are not too difficult to get used to.  If you print them out and place these into a plastic sheet protector, it makes an easy player aid. :ugeek:

The weapons that have the Weapon Ability "No Hull Damage could be used by pirates/privateers to render a ship helpless, but intact, ripe for plundering.  Since using such a weapon and weapons that cause hull damage together can strip strip a ship of weapons, etc without destroying it, I think that this Weapon Ability should Not make a weapon less expensive.  Perhaps it should increase the cost of the weapon.
In the Space-combat game Starfire, Force Beams hit everything and were regular blast-to-damage/destroy weapons.  Energy beams skipped hull, crew quarters and armor, similiar to No-Hull-Damage weapons.  Yet these energy beams cost 40% more...
