I personally love the "Space empire" grand strategy games. Just got the new Solar Starfire, waiting on the 'new' VBAM, and currently working on my 9th iteration of my own system. To me, they give purpose to all those battles I fight. Still, they are not needed for a quick pick-up game with friends who don't want to go that deep to fight others in SPACE, instead of some other Genre. So Starmada as a battle scenario builder, or an alternate combat system for the Grand strategy is viable for BOTH. Some basic empire building rules would be cool, but that is all that is needed at this time. If Dan gets a ton of feedback saying, We want a more complex system and are willing to put our wallets where our mouths are; I'm sure he can think about that and come to his own conclusion as to where Starmada can expand to.
I'm gonna have problems getting someone (other than my daughter) to play Starfire due to its complexity. But I'm sure gonna enjoy some very complex solo campaigns playing it. VBAM looks almost easy compared to it, so I might get others to go to that level, maybe even include some of the Campaign Guide rules (I also like the multi-planet rules). Different complexity levels isn't really an issue to me, it is a godsend that there is something out there for everyone, because some days I feel like working on my empire and other days I just want a fun 'Blast em' battle.
Dan,
I've been working on a 'Space Empire' building game since 1978, I'm now in my 9th iteration. Nothing published yet. So compared to me, you are way above the curve. And you are doing a better job here letting us know your status than at VBAM. Thanks for your hard work !
Enpeze, If you think VBAM is to big, I shudder to think of what you'd think of Starfire, hehehe.
Darn,
It took only a few clicks at BoardGameGeek to look up these old products, and they were indeed "Unofficial" products. Well, I might still see if my OLD friend has his SSD's of them and make my own "Unofficial" Starmada variant. If that actually happens, I'll post them to the boards. That group of vessel and weapon designs deserve to not be forgotten.
I find it ironic to say the least that TFG/ADB took Companion games to court about this when A) Companion games really did a great job promotion the SFB system, and B) That Star Fleet Battles cannot use "Star Trek' canon lest they be slapped with a lawsuit from a greater power. Although I certainly understand the need for intellectual property rights, I'm sure those of you at MJ12 sometimes feel the ropes attached when dealing with another's property righta, and the hoops you must jump to stay on the right side of the law. BTW - thanks for going thru those hoops ... having Starmada with the SFB universe is just too cool !!
Terryoc,
To the best of my memory, the game company that made the SSD Books of their 'Space Sector', DID have permission. At least it said so on the inside cover of their books. The SSD books were sold at Hobby stores, not some fly by night e-mail address. I'm contacting an OLD friend to unearth his old SFB cache to verify this. My extensive collection of SSD photocopies didn't survive one particular humid summer many years ago, and the mold (Kudzu perhaps) invasion which soon followed. I'll also check online.
Companion Games, long since defunct, made some of the first SSD's for Star Fleet Battles that were not made by Task Force Games. They then made a CCG called Galactic Empires based on the Sector those SSD ships populated. They were fun and I'd like to see them done in the Star Fleet universe, Starmada style.
The Races represented were:
Argonian First Republic
Krebiz Capitalist Alliance
Corporate Agressors
Mechad Holdfast
Scorpead Dominion
and others, including my Favorite minor/major race ...
the Indirigan Nomads.
Oh Yea, they also had many varieties of Space Dragons
does this ring any old-timers bells ??
