Hi Steven
Oh Rats! I thought that making sure that the list bits were numerical would fix it!
What version of Windows and Excel are you using?
I am glad I do not have little green triangles! I can see loads of people driven mad by them.
Did the Open Office install properly?
Open Office Calc is the spreadsheet part, it is fairly standard in layout.
Start Calc then use that to open the shipyard. Note that if you open zipped files, you can read only.
It is possible to save spreadsheets in a fair number of types using the save as option but I keep to either .ods or .xls.
Let me know how you get on with it.

Identified a few other places which may cause Excel to throw a wobbley.

Changed Tech levels on Small Craft sheet to expanded.
Please test, I have tried the amended sheets but it is always best to have another set of eyes to look it over.
Latest v1.9
Thanks.

Steve-

The symptom of this problem can be seen on the Nations sheet- look for little green triangles in the upper left cells, particularly in the ACC column (this is where I found them), which indicate a number that is formatted as text. These are text because they are input from a number table that is also formatted as text.

lamont

This is seriously weird, I checked back to version 1.2 and the ACC is formatted as numbers as is the section that they come from, Is Excel changing it? I have read that the latest Excel is not even compatible with some earlier Excel spreadsheets. I can not comment as I do not have Excel, not had the money for it (Excel is quite expensive here.)
I have gone over these tables again in v1.8 to see if it will help.
It is not easy to see where these problems are caused when I can not duplicate them.
Of course if everyone had a free copy of Open Office calc (Vista version now available)........

Hello Steven,

Microsoft Excell seems to be throwing spanners in the works, lamont had problems too.
Does the weapon SU show up on the Nation sheet?
I had trouble one time changing the weapon ACC after designing a ship but found the problem cleared when I re-chose the weapon on the template sheet.
If the CR in cell U5 on the template is showing as #N/A check cell AZ39 on the template sheet, I take it that this is also #N/A
If you follow up from AZ39, where does the problem start? Is it a particular piece of equipment?
Sorry for the questions, I cannot duplicate the error.

By the way version 1.9 posted earlier today. This may?? work better with Excell.

Same log in as RPGNow.com

Had no trouble at all.

Thank you, I would like to think that  K. David Ladage approves of what I have done with the shipyard over the last couple of years. Although I felt a bit guilty when I added the Fighter sheet with shuttlecraft, Ablative armor and other non official bits to the Starmada X version.

New material.... I think that is room for some more.

Certainly trying to work out how to get things done in the spreadsheet has taken my mind off my arthritic aches and pains! I had little knowledge of spreadsheets until the shipyard. That is why I always ask if I have messed anything up.

Just posted, version 1.7 updated with ISS options.

I have checked it but it has been a long night!
Any errors or comments, please let me know.

Range details now take into account Minimum Range and Carronade, in that short or long range will show as ---.
In the "Bits" for making your own data sheet, everything is an absolute so you do not have to copy everything.
ie less than 7 hull? just copy the top lines of the hull, engines and shields.

Hope you like the example.

ISS page 7

Overthrusters ORAT x1.2*

*Applied to weapon battery ORATS only.

Is this correct? (used to be x1.5 DRAT and not linked to weapon batteries)

Tech level option now on everything as per page 42. (except Carrier and launch tubes, Tech level option is on small craft sheet)
Sorry, I thought that this might have been an error.
V1.6 posted soon.

Tech levels were not applied under previous Starmada versions to:
Armor Plating,
Marines,
Nor the items listed now as Auxiliary Services (Cargo, Hospital, Repair, Science & Transport).

Page 42, The General Tech level seems to indicate that this has changed,
Also the questions in the Admiralty shipbuilder topic.
Is this correct?
Is there now a way to change the size of Marines (apart from feeding them gene modified crops that is?)

Seeker pods!

Great! Send a large empty hull through them and sit back, watching them stick themselves to it sailing off into the sunset.

Imagine the minefield in Galaxy Quest.

IF and that is a big IF, someone wanted to use 30 degree arcs, it would be simpler to change the +1 per arc to +0.5 per arc.
Would it not?

with regard to the text vs numerical format issue-

when opened, v1.5 (and earlier) has three weapons built in the Nation sheet; all of the stats for the weapons show normal (no green triangle in upper left corner) and SU calcs are fine--

if I change a number in the ACC column on this sheet (by validation on your dropdown list), a green triangle shows and the cell indicator says it is formatted as text or the number has an apostrophe in front of it-

when I trace the ACC input list to the TO HIT table on the Tables sheet, I find that numbers 1-6 are also marked with green triangles and indicated as TExt formatted (cells B20-B25 on this sheet)- this of course messes up the numerical calculations of SU on the Nations sheet; when I reformat those cells to numerical and reenter the numbers, the green triangles go away everywhere and SU calcs are fine on the NAtion sheet-

I suspect this is just a quirk of Excel 2007 opening your version of the sheet, but others may encounter this if they use Office 2007 as well

I have seen other oddities- I use Visual Basic to display the fire arc images in the battery regions of the Starmada sheet- in Excel 2003, the images would displace up or down a bit in a regular way that depended only on sequence in a given battery- regardless of what I told the system to do in the subroutine; when I upgraded to Office 2007, all images went right where they were supposed to-

lamont

Ah, that explains it. Open Office Calc is more forgiving it seems. Little green triangles? Do not get them, although there are some times when text/numerical differences do muck things up.

Talk about not seeing the wood for the trees! I started updating the shipyard to learn about spreadsheets. It must be a couple of years now and it never came to mind to copy the Starmada diagram and paste it on a new sheet as a bitmap!
It does work with Open Office and is easier, Thanks.
And thanks for your solution with regards Excel 2007.

What term to classify ships?
Modern Destroyers are the same size (or bigger) than WWII Cruisers, size has given way to role.

Does it matter what term you use, after all some of the races are not even Human. Who knows, in the future spacecraft may be called "Matter Movers".

I think that everyone tends to get tied to Actual past classification. Why worry, they are YOUR ships.

Now, where did I put Her Maj's Iron Steam flyer class 2?

lamont-

I do not know of a way to save a single sheet as they are linked but it is possible to have a shipyard with several ships. Copy the template sheet after the original one, This will become Template_2. Copy the Starmada sheet also after the original and using Find & Replace on starmada_2 sheet, change Template to Template_2.
Copy template_2 for another etc.

Cannot seem to duplicate the ACC problem. Which cells become #N/A and on which sheet?
The SU calc on the Nation sheet for ACC is not linked to the Tables sheet but the ACC Divisor block to the right of the Final SU.

The CR error was a stupid mistake, In Template cell BB38, I duplicated BB37 in the calc, just delete one.

You can find the latest version in yahoo groups, mj12games.

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/mj12games/

Shipyard Admitalty Ed is in the files section.

You will have to log in first. Of course, if you have not joined yahoo groups you could send me your email address and I will send you the zip file.

Not used it myself but I did put a text sheet in the shipyard a while ago.

Updated 3/1/2008 v1.4
Text sheet updated.
Starmada sheet changes to screens if choice made on Nations sheet.

Anyhow, let me know what you think of the shipyard.

Hello!

The Starmada Admiralty Ship designer is awesome.  big_smile
I was wondering if you could add range 21 and range 27 to the Range 0ptions.  I have the main battery of some of my ships firing out to 30, and I would change it to 27, leaving the 30 range for Spinalmount-type weapons.
I hope that these additions will not be to difficult...

Steven Gilchrist; Jacksonville, Fla, USA

No problem, I will change the Ranges back from a drop down list, so that any range (up to 30) can be entered. I already had the shipyard showing short/medium/long range bands for any range.
The Spinal mount range is calculated from the hull size (auto)

I did think about putting the expanded tech levels in. No problem.
Look out for Version 1.1 (version in top left on Nation sheet).
Now posted.
Happy New Year!

One question -- the VBAM Scout requirements. You could change them to requiring Fire Control and a certain number of Science units, since Fire Control fulfills many of the same functions as LRS used to.

-Adso

Scouts only needed EWS and then Science x10 for the next level. EWS being replaced by Fire Control made all with Fire Control scouts. I guess for VBAM ships it would be possible to put EWS back or make Science (50) a requirement. I have tried to keep to the Starmada/VBAM book.

Given the changes to equipment (or should I say the removal of equipment), I think the best option is to make all of the VBAM unit abilities into separate Auxiliary ship options that require X SU per level. I haven't got a good feel for how much space a ship will have available under S:AE at the various tech levels, but some multiple of 100 would probably work out.

-Tyrel

I changed the requirements for VBAM abilities to reflect the change to Auxiliary Services etc. Science labs required for Scout Level 1 was x10, For example now it is Science (100).
I have tried making various VBAM ships and it seems to work. Just a pain that you have to remember how much SU the original requirements were.
Still, something to think about for a next version of the shipyard.

Sorry, that is probably because I use Open Office and have always posted the versions output as Excel 97/2000/XP xls. This seems to give the most compatibility but microsoft will muck that up with their latest version.
Open Office seems to open just about any spreadsheet, it is not 100% but very nearly so and each new version has still opened sheets made with the last. Can not say better of a free prog.

Ooops, sound like an advert!
Anyhow, hope you like this version of the Shipyard.

Posted on Yahoo group.
As usual, you can design 26 different weapons, choice of up to Five weapon banks per ship.
Design up to Sixty types of Fighter, Strikers, seekers & Boarding Pods.
VBAM stats included.

Let me know if you spot any errors.

Been working on an Admiralty version of the shipyard (after just having changed the StarmadaX version to have 26 weapon types and extra equipment choice space).

Nearly finished VBAM part.
Dan, The KEB defences, are these intended to be linked to the number of Hull points as Shields are or will they remain at up to 5 hits for each?
