I actually started on a X/Brigade to Unity. One problem is that, while X converted up to Admiralty, and then to Nova (it did get shaky by that point), there's no good conversion to Unity. One of the major issues is that there's a lot of traits that don't convert/exist in Unity. The best you could do would be to bring them up to Admiralty, then use the guidelines in Unity to run them against other Unity ships.

I think a better approach would be to take X/Brigade ships and rebuild them in Unity from the ground up; will be cleaner from my experience.

No. Sounds like you're thinking SFB here. In FC power is power (AFAIK, no difference between Warp and Impulse anymore). You'd take all the power generated by the Frax CA (34), subtract the cost of firing the phasers and disruptors (6*1+4*.5+4*2=16). Divide the remaining by EPR (1*4) and you get speed = (34-16)/4 = 4.5 => 5.

Did a quick mucking with the spreadsheet. I'm guessing that that list was drawn up before Unity was finalized, and he was using 0.7 for Slow instead of 0.6 which he appeared to have settled on. (Using 0.7 got photons right in line.)

Okay. So I spent the 40 minutes it took me to build a spreadsheet and crunch a lot of numbers. The conclusion I've sadly come to at this point is that there is no discernable straight way to convert from SFB/FC to SFB Unity. sad Stuff like weapons and traits seem to be really straight forward; but Hull, Engines, and Screens (along with EPR) just don't follow any set ratios. (And I tried combinations of things, believe me.)

Now, I don't know of this accidental or by design because ADB has set down rules to MJ12 about conversions.

The good news is that for those of us with scores of source material, designing variants is relatively simple, it should be as simple as playing with the weapons loadouts.

Also, for those who do want to try the Plasma Torps; the following quick converstions are:
Romulan KR - As Klingon D7 except: drop Phaser-2 LW & RW, Disruptors, Drone Racks, and Anti-Drone; Change Weapons to 11-9-7-5-3; Add Plasma-S Torpedo LP & RP (1); CRAT 200
Romulan K5R - As Klingon F5 except: drop Disruptors, Drone Racks, and Anti-Drone; Change Weapons to 8-6-3; Add Plasma-F Torpedo LP & RP (1); CRAT 135

Just curious, why do you give the Point Defense modes on the Phasers both Pnp and NPr? You're basically cancelling out the benefits of the Pnp trait to make them slightly less effective against ships at really close range.

Okay, having run almost all the ships through the DryDock, I've come to the following conclusions:

All new traits basically cost nothing. ADDs, PPs, Engine ratings, turns...everything but the Plasma Torp Evp trait ('cause there's no plasma ships to calculate). No effect on the combat rating at all.

There's obviously some sort of negative modifier on the Klingon and Kzinti Drone Racks; I'm guessing to account for the Rack-specific rules. Though it doesn't seem to apply to Federation Racks.

I'm going to fish out my old SFB sheets and see if I can't get a rough conversion guide going.

Okay, got my copy of SFB Unity.

Thoughts (of a Rules Lawyer):
New Traits (Engine Power Ratio, Tight Turn, Wide Turn, Anti-Drone) could stand to be put under their own heading for ease of looking up.
Power rules could stand to have their own section, or maybe a table summarizing what generates and uses power. (Likely needed more in future supplements).

Found the rules to be a little clunky, but then again I'm a Rules Lawyer so...  :roll:
And as a rules lawyer (and someone with a whole bunch of SFB material eagerly awaiting conversion), was wondering if there's any ORAT/DRAT modifiers for the new traits (including #PP and Evp)? I ran several designs randomly through Drydock and found that for the most part they match values in the book; which seems to indicate that all the SFB stuff doesn't affect Combat Ratings.

Okay, so I finally settled on designs and been cranking out ships like a madman. Will have some posted soon, just hoping for a bit of input on formatting first.

The trick with the B5 Wars universe is that there's a lot of 'In Service Dates' to manage. I'm curious as to how people would prefer the formatting. The major factors are:

Ship 'classes'; currently broken down as (for the majority): Capital, Heavy Combat Vessel, Medium Ship (thinking of combining with HCV), Light Combat Vessel, Bases and OSATs, Super Heavy Fighters (thinking of combining with LCV), and Other.

With in each of these 'classes' I've inserted markers for the year in service. When multiple ships share the same in service dates, I arrange them by cost, lowest to highest.

Other notes: Only Capital ships (and bases) have directional defenses, the others have single values.

So, any preferences?

Drydock's been working fine for me; I must have cranked out a couple hundred ships by now.

I'd simply delete and redownload the file, start with a fresh copy, see what happens.

I second the motion! Makes more sense, escorts were/are usually equipped with uber-defensive weapons/fire control. Although an effect that would allow them to soak up some fire too/instead would be good too (kind of like a dedicated shield ship or a massive-scale fighter screen). Maybe something that allows a ship to "extend" (replace with any technobabble really) it's shields, dropping in value but protecting an adjacent friendly ship; dunno about screens, maybe double damage or half penetrates to defending ship? Gonna think and refine it a touch.

Also, I had toyed with a fleet in Nova that used massed formations of Hull 3 with Escort as a sort of "flying screen" for the Capital ships. Put far too many ships on the board to be really feasible (really needed to be at five wide least two deep per protected ship to be truly effective, and that was just for a head-on assault), and really it just begged to be hit by Proximity weapons.

The ROF dictates how many turns the torp is on the board, as the Evaporating (Evp) trait removes one marker per turn. Both the G- and F-torps begin with the same damage potential, but the F-torp is weakened more quickly.

Ah, so that's what Evp is. I thought it was Enveloping; things make more sense now.

Because phasers were way too powerful at close range in those previous editions.

Fair enough. Still, I (personally) think that Phasers could have been changed a little, namely making the Ph-2 ACC 4+ say? (Dunno about the FC background, but I recall that in the SFB background the real difference between the Ph-2 and the Ph-1 was more an issue of fire control than power; same mount, same power requirements [except for the Andros].) And/or maybe making the Ph-1/2/3 Ranges 12/9/3 or 9/9/3 (with Ph-2 definitely being ACC 4+, or diffuse maybe).

Then again, I'm a rules lawyer with a bad literal streak. smile

I believe I mentioned this in the previous thread; you need to make sure that the Weapons list is sorted alphabetically. Otherwise it doesn't pull up the data correctly. (It's also explained on page 74 of the rule book and in the pdf with Drydock.)

Ah. Ship systems are in the Tables Tab (you'll have to unhide it). I've only mucked around in there briefly (and not with ship systems).

Greetings. In the current spreadsheet it'll look something like this:

So the weapons have to have the same name, and for the second mode you add a ">" (no quotes) and the second mode's name; no space before or after the ">". This might help:

[Weapon Name]
[Weapon Name]>[Second Mode]

Also, don't forget to sort all the weapons so that they are in alphabetical order. (I simplify and just highlight all the cells I'm using and push the A-Z button on the Sort tab.) If you don't sort the weapons, it won't pull up the proper info.

Also, not quite sure what you mean about "customize the ship systems". Do you mean creating new ship systems?

I know that this is kinda late in the game, but at least you're not done any Plasma ships yet.
