I prefer Quantum Legions for the Horse and Musket era (not just because I posted the stats).
Dragoons started as mounted foot but as time went on they became medium cavalry expected to carry out scouting roles as well as being able to deliver a mounted charge like heavy cavalry. I believe they would not have gotten far on foot and at a bit of a disadvantage fighting on foot in their cavalry boots, which were not designed for walking. smile It seems a fair number of cavalry had muskets of one kind or another but mainly used them for picket duty unless ordered to hold an area.
Nova I think is better suited to armoured warfare on land and any era naval using the faceted shields for broad bands of armour (thickness) with armour in bands within that.
Maybe I should explain that.
Infantry shields - none.
Light APC add armour 1-3
APC with thicker or tougher skin might be shields 6,6,6,6,6,6 + Armour 0-3 (might deflect some shots and absorb a few before BOOM!)
Light tank might be shields 5,5,5,5,5,6 + Armour 0-4

Nova does lend itself to a wider range of games than just space.

Latest version posted 20130810 with these additions and a slight change.

Hq Mobile and emplaced. ESG change, centre changed to "E" as the old icon is now Sensors Active and lastly Sensors Passive. These last two are not unlike the counters for sensors wink

What kind of modifier did you give the "Exhaust Port" trait?  wink
Erik

None, the station was taken over by an ex-councillor from the London Borough of Islington.
He declared that it was an insignificant risk and put a sign up on the port - 'Proton Torpedo Free Zone'. lol

Anyone not knowing the joke - Islington declared the borough to be a Nuclear Free Zone and put up signs, much cheaper than fallout shelters!

Latest font version is now in it's own file thread so anyone wanting it does not have to download shipyard nova.

I was thinking of the flotillas in my latest (and working-on) supplements, so something like the icons in your second post.

I must admit, it was a spur of the moment ask, and I didn't really think about how difficult it would be to do when I asked. Maybe I should stick to the design of supplements instead...:D

Something like?
I have added these for anyone that can use them (as I already said, the 2 or 3 ship icon can be handy to show that a small Nova ship stats actually represent more than one ship) just have not posted it yet. Perhaps I should start a thread for the font in files and only update the version with shipyard nova when that gets updated.

The only real difficulty is getting the glyphs to actually look like something at point sizes below 25 or so which depends upon the programme the font is being used with and the user's monitor. I do not mind trying to add more to the font but please, few words can have a huge range of meanings.  smile

How about icons for Flotillas of the Super-Heavy Fighter, Shuttle, Gunboat and Corvette, and the Marine versions of each of those as well?

Ask and you will get.... confused!
Flotillas? Would you care to expand on the idea? Did you have a specific Super-Heavy Fighter in mind?
Super-Heavy Fighters have Flights and Squadrons. Even if it is a flight of One.
Shuttles are treated as individuals although I suppose flights are not out of the question.
The naval units were intended to cover more than one scale where NS (Naval Small) represents either a ship of Corvette size or smaller in one scale and a small force of up to "X" number of points (might be a destroyer and a couple of escorts) in a larger scale.
Nova, where stats represent 3 x Hull 1 ships or 2 x Hull 2 ships are possibly "on the book" but I do want to keep it as generic as I can with regards to the glyphs. I am trying hard not to make the icons too cluttered as the glyphs then turn to blobs. smile I think an Icon with more than three ships would be too much, see mock up example below.
The three ship could serve as a Flotilla icon (ok these are a re-use of the naval ships but you get the idea.)

Ha, Ha, Does not need to as the Accurate Repeating Double Damage laser cannon will blast any enemy ships. Just mind the debris on your way out lol
All that power and just one little guy in the outbuilding directing.

Dan's probably busy.
I just had a look at Assault Corps and it appears to be a whole higher level to Quantum Legions and bears little resemblance.
Quantum Legions is a whole lot simpler, quick to play and can be adapted to any setting or time period.
The rulebook has a Science Fiction setting but I found it just as handy fitting in Napoleonics.
Counter layout be it Infantry, Tanks Aliens or other vehicles are like this (Examples below).

Hope that helps.

A few more to represent Naval units in Small, Medium, Large and Very Large.
Note the bar at the bottom on icons indicates intended for ground, Space to Ground or Sea use.
The units are generic and not intended to represent specific existing ones.

I'm still here--just posted another new setting...:)

But I have no ideas for new font icons, and I post my ships in Drake notation anyway (the better to paste into Notepad and then into the document)

I know one thing for sure--I wouldn't be able to do anything near to what you're doing--if you've noticed, my drawing skills are not top-notch...:(

And those of us left are thankful .
The Drake notation is handy for keeping files small but I still find myself keeping data cards in .png format. I was going to use the Drake Notation in vassal but I am getting used to filling in the ship class stats when adding a new ship (just have to remember to save the module between entering ships so that the stats are kept).
I am just happy if what I turn out is not a disaster smile  To me some of my ships seem crude and I am envious of everyone that can use 3D software. Never had the money to buy the software in order to learn but I have noticed a prog called Blender. In my head I can visualise the shapes but the problem is transferring them to a computer.
Who cares if your drawing skills are not "top-notch" it is the trying that counts, I have had to accept that I am no Da Vinci and never will be but practice helps.
Never mind about icon ideas, since I asked a few have come to mind. You see though, just when I think I have enough people will start posting that I have forgotten something or other. lol

Hi Erk
I had noticed that there are a few people left (seems like very few).
I started the icons because I wanted to print my own ships and even bought the font mentioned in the book but that did not have very much of use to me. Besides I wanted a font geared towards Starmada (and maybe a few other games). Only answer was buy some software and start from scratch.
I know what you mean about their being distracting and admit I do not use them all of the time.
As you can see from the last lots I have been thinking on what transport ships might carry, which is where I was going with Fuel, Munitions and Passengers. Who knows down the line they might come in handy in campaigns or if the Starmada & Wardogs book ever gets released.
I guess printed at a larger point size some could be used as damage chits and the generic ones on most any data cards.
I am still crawling along with the Iron Stars ships which has at least given me a chance to see how the faceted shields work with Nova. Since it only needs you to see which shield makes the save throw it is no harder than using Nova shields as is.
I have posted in the hope that it will get others thinking and posting their ideas but sometimes it is like "flogging a dead horse"!

I will put any errors I notice here.
Counter notes:

Japanese Hodaka and Nagano have had each others name put on counter.
Edit1: Japanese Destroyer Saidan,  Errata increased Torpedoes to 4 even though it clearly has 2.

The number of people giving ideas is truly overwhelming, 0.
Is there anybody left that have not deserted to other games?
Starmada AE is not dead, just an alternative.
Oh well, I will just carry on on my own. Never know these may come in handy for someone.
I am adding these. All will be included when I next post Shipyard Nova.

I have been playing around with Iron Stars in IS AE and SFO.
Some things do not look right to me so I will post my amended cards should anyone be interested.
I will start off with two German ships from Merchant War.
Looks to me that the light guns were doubled but I can not see the extra ones and the counter does not have them underneath so I will post my versions.
Note points for Machtigsten does not include points for the two FAC's.
If they are of use please say so.

One more thing, each rack can only be fired once, right?

That is right each rack can only be fired once, cross each rack off the data card when it is launched.

No, Drone Rack (4) means that the ship has Four Drone Racks.
The number that can be launched in any turn depends upon the size of the launching ship.
See page 30 of Klingon Armada (AE) for the maximum number that can be launched per turn.
For example the Kzinti command cruiser can launch up to Three per turn.
