We use Fire As She Bears! by Phil Fry for our Age of Sail games.  It is very easy to learn and use.

If you do decide to go with Starmada for this period, you need to remember that there are major differences in command and control compared to normal Starmada settings.

The Sa'vasku

These were probably the most complicated to convert from Full Thrust as they are the only ships that use an energy allocation system.  I have gone for a middle ground between speed, weapons, and defences for these ships – it would be possible to convert them in a number of other ways.

The carriers grow the fighters as needed.  While the are referred to as “drones” they operate entirely as normal fighter flights.

Ships of the Phalon

The Phalon are one of the alien races.  Their ships look rather like snail shells and are well armoured.  They can, between battles, reconfigure their Pulsars between the three range types - for simplicity I have gone for a set weapon mix for each ship.
The Protector class ships are the corvettes, frigates and destroyer equivalents, the Warriors are the cruisers, the Great Warriors are the battleships, and the Motherships are the carriers.

Counter it with RNG 18 ACC 2+ Inverted Range Modifiers, and add counter measures to your ships.  You are then hitting on 2+ and he is looking for 4+.

I have found that for just about every weapon you can come up with there is a way to counter it, or you just use the same weapon and it is then just a case of who gets the best dice rolls.

With the Seperatists (and Rebel Alliance for that matter) you have to remember that it is a collection of fleets that have been thrown together in common cause.  You therefore have ships designed with difference philosophies trying to operate together.

Having said that you are also rather limited in the ships available to the Republic during the Clone Wars - either the Acclimator Assault Ship (Episode II) or Venator Star Destroyer (Episode III).  You don't really see anyone operating with a true fleet with light picket ships (other than fighter patrols), cruisers, battleships, tenders/supply ships etc.

You finally get a proper fleet structure in the WEG Black Fleet Crisis ships for the New Republic which do have pickets, gunships, cruisers, carriers etc.

However, you are correct that with SW "looks good on the screen" is more important that anything else.

One of the problems I found when converting the RPG ships is that while Wizards of the Coast have combined the weapons into batteries (so an Imperial Star Destroyer has 4 turbolaser batteries rather than the 80 in the earlier editions) they have left it as having 72 TIE fighters (12 TIE Interceptors, 12 TIE Bombers, 48 TIE Fighters) which as SW uses flights of 4 as the organisation gives you 18 flights, but you have a lot less guns to shoot them down with.

I like the idea of reducing the number of flights as well - maybe to one per squadron.

I keep looking at doing a conversion from the RPG stats from Wizards of the Coast.  It groups the weapons into batteries so you may only have 3 or 4 actual weapons on the ship but they represent quite a few individual turbolasers.

I have yet to get the ships and fighters to work quite as I would want but I am happy to post what I have if people want to see it.

The ships for the core fleets (NAC, ESU, FSE etc) are from the Fleet Books.  The ships for the other fleets are from playtest/fan material.

I have conversions for just about anything that someone has done Full THrust stats for.

I have a "Why?" sort of question about how damage to shields and engines is worked out.

If I have, say, 10 hull boxes and 2 shields then the 5th shield hit will reduce my shield rating to 1.
However, if I start with 1 shield then it will take 10 shield hits to remove it.

Why doesn't the ship with 1 shield lose it after 5 shield hits?  I get the mathematics of how the damage track is worked out, it is why do you not get reduced to zero shields quicker if you only start with one.

The same with engines (although I can see not having any engines not being that fun).

There are a some in Klingon Armada and they have drone racks and photons rather than option mounts.
I'm not sure if option mounts exist in FC.

I know FC started with the later "post-refit" ships but I would like to see the original basic ships for each race - so DN, CA, CL, DD, FF and maybe a tug - like those from the SFB Basic Set.

I would also like to see all the races included - so Hydrans, Lyrans, ISC etc.

Maybe you could give the ships countermeasures if they have at least X D/Di per hull size?

I know it isn't great given that this would also work against lasers, force beams, etc, but the only other option I can see is to make the missile launchers into seekers and make D/Di anti-fighter batteries (or fighter exclusive weapons).

I agree that many of the later ships ended up feeling the same (just lots of missile and anti-missile systems) until the arrival of the Thebans and then the Arachnids and their different weapons/doctrines.

But Mongoose seem to have been in much better shape when it came up for renewal.

I do get the impression that Warner think they should get more for the license that it is worth given the time that has elapsed since the were even partially serious about putting new material out there.  It is like they think it is worth as much as StarWars or Star Trek yet they have let the franchise die while trying to milk every last cent out of it.

I have often found that high speed gives you problems when you take Engine hits ("Help!! I can't slow down!!!") and therefore find that I use less than the maximum rating.

However, having a higher rating that you use allows your ship to take an Engine hit or two before you start having insufficient rating to do the maneuvers you want to do, especially on smaller ships where the rating drops faster than on big ships.

I am interested on why you different arcs for the lasers on ther Discovery.

From my memories of Starfire all weapons had the same arc of "everything but backwards" so I would expect them to also both be [ABCD] like all the other weapons.

The thing is that the drones carried by fighters have the same range as those carried by ships - this allows your fighters to fire from beyond the defensive weapons of the target ship and then either retire to rearm or follow the drones in given the target the choice of what to fire at (and often launching a second waves of drones at point blank range once the ship has used its defensive weapons).  This means that you have a fight of fighters launching a flight of strikers.

I would suggest that you need a "RNG-2" or "RNG-3" option for fighters to allow for the use of stand-off weapons outside the range of the close defense weapons (anti-fighter batteries) of ships.

Looking at the Critical Damage rule in the Annex, it seems rather odd that for some systems (Marines, Mines, Teleporters) you roll once per point, but for Anti-Fighter Batteries you roll once for the whole lot, no matter how many you have.

Surely these should be rolled for individually as well?

I like what you are saying and it does seem odd that some systems are immune from damage - I can shoot off all the guns on your ships but not the launch tubes for your missiles (seekers) or your close defense guns (anti-fighter batteries), but would you not have to reduce the cost of the various systems to take into account the fact that they can now be damaged?

If my countermeasures used to work for the whole of the battle (well, until the ship is destroyed anyway) but now only work for a proportion of the battle based on hull size and the number of other special systems on the ship I would want a proportional reduction in the cost of the system.
