As another newbie to Starmada, I've got a question:

What books for the previous edition(s) remain useful/relevant? I know the core books and the ISS have been superseded, but are any of the other books useful?

I just refuse to play SFB because I won't to play any game where the rulebook's a lethal weapon. A friend of mine who's been playing SFB since the dawn of time has several three-ring binders full of SFB rules, SSDs, etc.

I know you've probably seen this one before but...

I found Starmada via RPGNow, and it looks pretty interesting. I've been wargaming for twenty years now, and most space combat games I've seen are either too bogged down with detail, or not flexible enough, or.... I'll stop now. :? Starmada looks like it hits things just right.

However, my gaming budget's pretty tight. So before I plunk down my hard-earned dollars,  I present to you the following challenge:

In 100 words or less, sell me on Starmada.
