Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Rackham is gearing towards the release of their next faction for AT-43, the alien Cogs. Here's a concept sketch and a pic of prototype minis:
http://i49.servimg.com/u/f49/12/39/80/36/cogpre10.jpg
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_online/img97/COG2.jpg

Aside of these obviously being prime Army Customizer fodder, I'm seeing here some possibilities for converting myself some Meraxilla...

More as the situation develops.

EDIT: another prototype:

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Zombiesmith has released Quar cavalry (SZ=3 infantry in D:VG terms) for preorder (projected shipping on July 21st):

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Black Scorpion's "frill-headed aliens" line has recently expanded to include guntoting models:
http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/range.asp?the_range=AL

While of the "dude in a suit" type, the figs do look nice enough in the pix. Let's hope they'll be inspired to make more of the techy types instead of yet more of those pseudofantasy wand wavers tongue

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

A powered infantry Cog type from Rackham on preview:
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … 9/Cog1.jpg
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … 9/Cog2.jpg
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … 9/Cog3.jpg
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … 9/Cog4.jpg
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … 9/Cog5.jpg

EDIT: more Cog images... Here's another powered infantry type, and a size comparison with a human fig:
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … 2_mini.jpg
http://www.rackham.fr/newsletter/cry_on … S_mini.jpg

Unfortunately, these are apparently rather too big to be used for Meraxilla. Dang. OTOH, as a silver lining, the bigger AT-43 minis tend to have better paintjobs than human scale ones so the figs in themselves will likely be better looking.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Blue Moon Manufacturing has released various "infantry fighting vehicles" (three walkers and a minitank), ostensibly for their pulp style aliens. Personally I think their designs and especially weapons are too "humanlike" to fit with their aliens, but what the heck, maybe they'll suit you, sir:
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/640218/

Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to suggest taking a look at Tabletop Gaming News' GenCon Indy 2008 pix report:
http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/gencon2008

Not so many alien minis in the latter, but tons of other miniature goodies. The page will reportedly update over the Con's progress.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Khurasan Miniatures has added large reptilian/dinosauroid Garn to their 28mm scale scifi line-up:
http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/thinginthecrate.html#C4

Also, they are planning on releasing some arachnid/scorpion types soonish...

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Newbold is picking up steam after their hiatus last year(ish), the latest alien type greens on the show are Quist Micronauts. Those looking for somewhat smaller humanoids should like them:
http://newboldworld.com/S08Arr/S08Arr23.html

---

Also, a post on TMP alerted me to the Laserburn Flesharons. Apparently they are actually quite nicely sculpted and very large for their nominal scale of 15mm, so they would work as small nonhumanoids (PLA mutants, anyone?) when mixed with 28mm scale minis. That, or as size 3 minis in their stated scale. Available (but poorly represented in the pix, apparently) here:
http://www.15mm.co.uk/Flesharon_Aliens.htm

---

Furthermore, producers of somewhat alternative fantasy stuff Dragonblood Miniatures has released a "Defiance compatible" mini in the form of Clal-Chk Firesting Sniper. This large (40mm) biped insectoid armed with a long rifle wouldn't look too out of place on a scifi tabletop (especially one of "future gothic" persuasions) and is available singly or in packs of 5 (they are all the same scuplt AFAIK, but looks easy to convert at least for the poses):
http://www.dragonbloodminis.com/Clal-Chk_Fire-sting_Sniper.htm

The main site seems to indicate further Clal-Chk models may be on their way.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

ZombieSmith of the Quar fame has recently released some uniformed and (mostly) armed Greys of not-too-serious persuation. They are available in various unit size combinations and even include a hot Grey psyker chick (that is, I assume the other Greys think she's hot):
http://www.zombiesmith.com/collections/greys/

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Newbold's "rotating shop" (they only have a small part of their catalogue for sale at one time) for this month includes more gorgeous (nominally alien) girls with guns sculpted by Bob Naismith and a bunch of new stylized lizard aliens, Azurians. Lizards are otherwise the order of the day as well, the Grak spacefarers make a reappearance.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Khurasan has released their version of a warrior bug -- the Arachnian:
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/138310/

It comes with the option to build either a worker or a warrior, actually. The difference being that the warriors have a "gun" in their abdomen.

The link's to TMP news bit since you'll need to do some diggin' to find 'em on the company site.

EDIT: and now what I happened to be rather randomly reminded of their existence, Emperors Choice has a big bug thingee called Grey Horror that would go -- with minor conversions -- reasonably well with the Khurasan Arachnians as some kind of megastrain warrior:
http://empcho.bizhosting.com/greyhorrormini.html

They also have a tech insectoid called "Black Phraint" which I don't recall seeing before. Sadly only a single pose, it seems:
http://empcho.bizhosting.com/black_phraint.html

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Those of you that are fans of Arduin may notice that those 2 from Emperor's Choice seem familiar....

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

If you're more into 15mm scale...GZG has introduced the Ixx (insectoids) which look pretty cool.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Yep, they are pretty nice actually. It's too bad for us ca. 28mm gronards that GZG looks have moved away from doing anything much for 25mm.

Meanwhile, Rackham Entertainment pushed back the release of the Cogs I've mentioned in a couple of posts on this thread to March '09. Or so, actually they are saying "wave 11" which means it depends on how well they can get back to "a wave a month" schedule they have been struggling to do.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Amend the "March 09" in my previous post to "April 09" for the ETA of the Cogs as per the latest from Rackham Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Pulp Figures has added to their line of Radon Zombies: troopers armed with ray guns of various sizes (as I recall, they are all "ray guns" in the pulps, from pistols to rifles), plus an apparently unarmed female leader. The figs are pretty human (in fact they look a bit like discoloured versions of the Phantom) but should work quite well as aliens in your pulpy "aliens are the guys with the weird skintone, lumpy forehead optional" type of games.

Should be the latest releases listed on this page:
http://www.pulpfigures.com/cat.php?range=Wierd%20Menace&catalog=PWM&custID=81221622281228127451

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

January listing for NewBold include Shadowrun-style near future trolls and more space lizardmen:
http://www.newboldworld.com/09CS1/index.html

For a bit of old news, an up-and-coming company Ground Pounder Miniatures unveiled the first greens for its similarly up-and-coming miniature line (there is a game up-and-coming as well but we can safely ignore that tongue) last Christmas. Some nasty cyborgised combat biounits (derived from humans, ostensibly, but with those body plans who cares?) are shown. Also check out the gallery for some rather nice alien concepts.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

ZombieSmith has the new "Royalist" Quar out. As can be exepected, the only difference to the older ones looks to be in the guns and the uniforms.

The quick can see examples on their main page for a few days, while the dead will need to dig through their site:
http://www.zombiesmith.com/

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

MegaMiniature's latest batch of releases includes a new bug type alien cleverly dubbed "Biobug". The name might indicate traditonal Arachnid/Tyranid "biomechanic" bug, but the miniatures are of dude-in-suit type insectoids. Two sculpts come with techy weapons and 1 is unarmed, for a total of (just) 3 scuplts. The nominal scale is 25mm.
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/MegaMiniatures

Also still available from last month are humanoid doggy aliens, almost equally cleverly named "Kanines". The scale and the sculpt selection is similar to the Biobugs, as is the basic "human in a costume" aesthetic.

The site also provides rules for both, but not Defiance rules (fairly) obviously...

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Rackham Entertainment's plans for army boxes have leaked to the shops tho their site is still rather quiet about pretty much anything, really. Here's an entry on the official AT-43 forum that displays what's expected to be in the Cogs army box:
http://en-forum.at-43.com/viewtopic.php?p=75400#75400

For the price of $70, it looks quite reasonable (one must to recall the Cogs are large models, something like twice the size of an AT-43 human model). Expected release date looks to be June, which is also the official time of release of the day for the Cogs in general.

EDIT: release date has now been officially confirmed to be July for the Cogs box, as per news item on TMP (you can also see the current projected cover art):
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/239527/

At this rate, it'll be out November-ish wink

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Black Hat has announced Martian Empires starter packs. Along with human invaders from Earth, they include various aliens in the form of the Martian factions. So those leaning towards the Victorian side of science fiction (eminently doable under Defiance rules, of course) may find them of interest, tho they aren't perhaps quite a good a deal as you might think if you don't intent to use the included rules -- and why would you wink

Anyway, here's the news item via TMP:
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/292858/

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

EM-4 has added more Phagon Beastmen to their line-up of Spacelords figs. Old skool sculpts in old skool scale (real 25mm) but may be good for the gronards among us tongue

http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Beastmen.html

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

All this and even more... Phagon Beastmen, that is! See the above link for latest releases.

Meanwhile on the French front...

Rackham Entertainment keeps moving the Cogs release date (and Red Blok army box) back. I'm having hopes they'll be out for Christmas, the official version is currently August 3rd but it doesn't say which year tongue
http://en-forum.at-43.com/viewtopic.php?t=6695

Still, the first boxes have apparently been done and they've been handed around to cronies, henchmen and various other privileged insiders. Here's one of those with a review for those with French skills or energy to take Babelfish to it to read -- me, I just looked at the piccies, which don't look all that bad even if they did cut down on the prepaint detail to match the price point:
http://www.figouz.net/AT-43/Army_Box.php

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

While IIRC this thread was rather about ca. 28mm scale minis, for those who might be interested in going 15mm regardless might find the up-and-coming Critical Mass a line worth watching:
http://www.criticalmassgames.com/ <-- EDIT: link fixed to their current URL

They've got the 3D design whiz John Bear Ross on board doing (at least some of) the vehicles, and the previewed greens of the infantry look quite good too. Here's some piccies of those:
http://dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com/2009/07/critical-mass-games-arc-fleet-wip.html

There's something rather "Defianceish" about some of their models, most notably the humans...

---

Meanwhile back in the (apparently all of a sudden less fashionable) 28mm scale world...

This was initially anounced in April, but is now picking up steam for an actual launch... AE-Bounty from Darkson Designs (known for their alt-WWII game) features some ca. 28mm scale alien minis (as well as the perquisite humans). These are described as "retro/comic/Star Wars" in style and frankly the aliens I've spotted so far are, well, just too silly for me. Previewed human (or mutated human, as the case might be) models look nice tho and a promise has been made of many opportunities to custom you minis, which might indicate they are going to sell bitz from the line... Anyway, here's the official board where you can go to dig up pix:
http://darksondesigns.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bountyinfo

Whilst on the subject of retro/comic, Newbold have circulated their scifi dragonoids, the Grak, back into their charity shoppe:
http://www.newboldworld.com/09CS1/index.html

---

Incidentally, both CM and AE-B are going to have an associated game available but I'm sure nobody here will want to bother about those tongue

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Critical Mass Games brought us 15mm canids, now Khurasan Miniatures brings us 15mm felids:
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/233257/

Classic opponents have assembled... Fur will fly!

Just remember -- don't put the minis in the same box afterwards or the paintjobs'll be all scratched ere morning...

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Khurasan's busy this week, their nonhumanoid aliens ("Cnidarians") have apparently become available. Here's the news on Dropship Horizon:
http://dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com/2009/10/new-khurasan-miniatures-15mm-cnidarian.html

Unfortunately for me, they are in the much-in-vogue 15mm scale, so at only 20mm tall and being slight as well they wouldn't to go well with my 28mm minis collection. I urge anyone who is in 15mm to take them under serious consideration however. One seldom seems nonhumanoid aliens in miniature at all, much less something this well thought out.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Something for the pulp scifi afficionados... Blue Moon has relased its "Supreme Alien Commanders" character figures as well as previously unannounced (or maybe I just missed it) heavy weapons and crew models. The crew models come with alternate heads so you can deck them out for any of the Blue Moon's pulp alien factions, or if you prefer "pinheads with big guns" just leave them as they are.

Here's the news item on TMP:
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/191010/

---

In the more singular kind of miniature news, the sociopathic carbosilicate amorph Sergeant Schlock, the eponymous character from the hilarious space opera spoof web comic Schlock Mercenary is now available as a 28mm scale (somewhat limited availability) miniature. Being a collector's item, it is fairly steeply priced (especially for being accurately portrayed as looking rather like a big cowpat) and in any case there's just the single pose available, but anything Schlock is always worth a mention wink

News here:
