Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Working in 1/72 scale, there's a box called Space Battles from a company called Dark Dream Studio. It has two walker-types and 17 "Space Rangers"

While not their official website (I don't think there *is* one...) here's a link to what they look like: http://www.plasticrush.com/DARKDREAMSTUDIO72001.htm

They seem to be made of a softer plastic but are fairly inexpensive. (The distributor says that the retail is about $13.95 USD)

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Critical Mass Games has released their first battlesuit for Protolene Khanate I've mentioned before in the thread, the Ayame:
http://www.criticalmassgames.com/criticalmassgamesforum/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=159

As stated before, the line is nominally 15mm scale but the suit is a tad over 30mm high so can pass for an alien battlesuit or maybe a robot for 28-30mm scale in a bit of pinch. The entire line of the "space doggies" looks nice enough incidentally (apart from their upcoming big mecha previewed some time ago which I didn't like so much), but alas the scale is wrong for me personally, tho works well enough with Defiance of course.

One also notes that the company logo has quite a bit of similarity with the old Starslayer "exploding star" logo also used in the Defiance rulebook -- possible litigation opportunity there too

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

MegaMinis brings more pulp scifi style aliens in 25mm scale: the feline humanoid Pumaceans. Available in 4 distinct subspecies and poses only tho:

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Yet more "space cats"! It's a freakin' furball in 'ere, I tell you!

Anyway, Regiment Games is offering their 28mm scale (yes, contrary to popular belief, some companies still do make scifi miniatures in that wink ) cat people, the Rar, for preorder at a fair discount. The product ships in August, one gathers. More info here:

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

http://wargamesfactory.com/wargames-factory-store/shock-troops-sci-fi-greatcoat-troopers

HOLYCRAPAWESOME!

These come with enough weapons options for 2 or more squad types with a full compliment of Primary and Support weapons, with head types to visually delineate either leaders and heroes OR an additional 2 or more squad types. Better yet there are heavy weapons coming soon! This means that apart from lacking Powered Infantry there's more than enough variety, available economically, for an EXCELLENT Defiance force, with a nice unified "in uniform" look on the table.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Sure they seem nice enough scuplts and are affordable, but I'm not personally too fond of the aesthetic. Done to death and all that. Plus they aren't aliens*

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

They have weird bug-eyed alternative heads. As for the OP, I thought this was a different thread <.< >.>

Close enough. The series they are from (starting) *is* *Alien* Suns... I suspect we'll see more *aliens* coming out of that company. I mean, heck, from what it sounds like I might get my Latex Babes of Estros (bonus points to anyone who catches that reference...) err... Amazons in Space... Besides, he wouldn't have been the first to point out human lines.

That said, anyone looking at Reaper's Chronoscope line? Some limited poses but they do have an entire line of martian figures. All I can say is ... "ACK ACK. ACK... ACK ACK ACK..."

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

"Latex Babes Of Estros"? ...oooookay, then....

The Greatcoat Troopers, I like 'em, they look sorta of like look like Vader Clones.....or Space Nazis of some sort with the "Death's Head" thing on the helmet.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

MegaMinis has announced

the acquisition and pending re-release of DemonBlade Games' Shock Force miniatures line. This collection includes over 140 highly detailed metal figures and vehicles, plus associated artwork, designed by top industry sculptors Chaz Elliot, Dave Summers, Bobby Jackson, Drew Williams, Dave Perry and Jeff Valent.

Mega Miniatures will be re-releasing figures from this range every month for the next 16 to 24 months

Suitably for the thread (main) subject, they start off with the GothRat series so now you can have the pesky rat aliens (originally they were mutans IIRC but who can tell these days...) for your felines to eradicate. Some of them are plenty big tho so they might make your cat miniatures look like kittens wink

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Hot in the heels of the news about DemonBlade acquisition, MegaMinis has announced it has bought the former Alpha Forge property Star Mogul. This apparently includes the rights to all miniatures (tho not molds if I understood Mr. Lauck's comments) so I would think those nice lizardine aliens the Hydrissians are going to become available again sometime in the future, as well as the other alien race the name of which escapes me ATM.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Tho D:VG isn't the best suited mechanic for running "Aliens as in the movie Aliens vs. Marines as in the movie Aliens" type of game, this comparison of "Alien as in the movie Alien" type of alien miniatures might still be of passing interest to some:

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

I was thinking about steampunk and about Space Fantasy with Orcs. So, then, I looked up some resin stuff I saw online years ago.

These are vehicles and cavalry for your Space Thugs (whether they be orcs, wookies, or whatever)

http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=47_53  little and less little green men riding savage war lizards!
<IMG src="http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/images/Grendel%20Monsters/20005_orc_carnosaur.jpg">http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/images/Grendel%20Monsters/20005_orc_carnosaur.jpg</IMG>

http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=47_57 a variety of steampunk machines, and barbarian stuff made of bones: including a giant catapult for the Space Thugs list, and a giant chariot pulled by pigs that really aught to be in the Space Thugs list. Also, stacks of cannons, steam tanks, and:

http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=47_57&products_id=289 GIANT STAMPY STEAMPUNK ROBOT! I picked one up on EBay. Detail is very well-sculpted even though there's not as much of it as on a lot of modern stuff. Perfect symmetry, crisp lines, a real quality sculpt IMO.

http://kromlech.eu/?page_id=120 Last but not least, awesome bits for converting stuff into Orcs for sci-fi. <IMG src="http://kromlech.eu/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/BritWeapons_color-300x176.jpg">http://kromlech.eu/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/BritWeapons_color-300x176.jpg</IMG>

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Oh, I checked out the Megaminis post: he bought the molds and production rights but the molds are poorly organised.

Some trivia and interpretation:

Usually each mold is two discs flat on one side, respective half-molds on the other, which put together make a wheel flat on the outside, mold halves pressed together inside. It gets spun to make lead go out into all the details. Each mold will have several miniatures, and often will consist of a bunch of totally unrelated crap to save up-front costs.... but thereafter driving up the cost per unit of the miniatures, since you cast unwanted stuff every time you cast wanted stuff. Legions of Steel was apparently very bad for that. Lauck's based his business on cheap miniatures, so he's got his eye on per-unit costs. He'll take the up-front cost of remolding to avoid recurring expenses and waste.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Scotia Grendel's Dwarf steam colossi are indeed quite good for, well Colossi

Not sure if Irregular Miniatures' oldies but goldies -- Spice Lice and Raymen -- have been mentioned yet but if not, they should be:
http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/25mmRanges/25mmSciFi.htm

Nominally they are 25mm but since they're aliens they should work with anything from 15mm (as SZ3 infantry, well maybe the Spice Lice only) to ca. 32mm.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Not really an alien miniature as of itself, but Zombie Smith's Quar get an aesthetically compatible light tank/armoured tractor:
http://www.zombiesmith.com/products/crusader-light-tractor

It looks easy to convert too so it's at least somewhat ubiquitous as well.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Black Hat Miniatures is re-releasing the much missed Cobalt minis line by Bob Naismith! Woot!
http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_shop/index.php?cPath=121_182

The line currently includes four alien types and a number of pretty spiffy human models. They are planning to release some never before seen stuff next and Naismith even promised to sculpt yet more Cobalt stuff at one point... Maybe now that the minis are on sale again he actually will*.

Anyhow it looks like it's high time for making more Cobalt lists for D:VG to accompany my old Ar-Men list:
http://heros.netai.net/files/Ar-Men.pdf

---

*)  ETA: Mike from Black Hat informed us in a TMP thread that there are indeed some plans towards doing more Cobalt minis, including the much-missed Ar-Men Leadbiters. Yay!

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Ravenstar studios appear to be manufacturing 28mm scale original mecha. I can't post links right now, but have a look at ravenstarstudios.blogspot.com if you're interested.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

I'm using models from Dust Tactics.

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=123&enmi=Dust%20Tactics

They come assembled and primed/base-coated.  They look not bad as is but if you want you can easily paint them up from there.

FIFY. I don't think you can actually buy any of the mecha models as yet tho :?:

You have to email him to get prices. You could ask then wink

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

Mongoose Publishing has released the first Kleggs for their Judge Dredd game. An entire squad has been tentatively promised sometime down the line. For those who don't know, Kleggs are a race of lagre carnivorous reptilian aliens who like to hire as mercenaries and take payment in meat (including but not limited to corpses of their fallen enemies):

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

It looks like Defiance Games is almost ready to actually sell something to someone:
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=249945

Their first batch, now availabe fro preorder (not strictly for purchase as the news item text claims) is a fairly predictable if reasonably affordable set of Space Marines (the Aliens kind, not the Ultramarines kind), but they are promising Bugs and even "intelligent aliens" soon - as well as numerous human factions, including some less well covered ones like the Chinese.

BTW is the cease and desist (based on the use of the word "Defiance" in a context that may confuse customers) from MJ12 already in the mail?

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

More big bad alien lizardmen, this time from Studio Miniatures:
http://www.studiominiatures.com/Shop/Atlantis-Imperium/Goloth.html

They recently picked up the Atlantis Imperium line of minis (formerly on Apocalypse Miniatures), from which this first (and reportedly previously unreleased) batch comes from. I have no idea what else they have in store, other than the Ancient Greece -influenced "Spartans in Spaaaaace!" that I remember from AM days:
http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=33092.0

SM has stated all AI sets will be released in this "battlesquad" format which is pretty good for D:VG purposes.

ETA: some new Goloths are out now - Command models and a support weapon.

Re: Advice on Defiance minatures

And yet more space lizardmen! Namely, I (and everybody else) seem to have neclegted to mention the Karack zar by The Baggagetrain. Nothing too inspired IMHO but they don't look half bad when nicely painted:
