Re: Starmada:Admiralty Shipbuilder
Okay,
thanks Dan,
I'm kind of relieved. I was going nuts there.
By the way, love the new edition.
Thanks again.

No, not going nuts.
It is the Shipyard that has a sheet for designing custom Fighters etc. This is on the Yahoo groups MJ12 site. There is a fair amount of other things like conversions also on that site.
If you do not want to sign up to Yahoo Groups and wish to give the Shipyard a go, email me and I will send you version 3.4. Also the short "How To" pdf that goes with it.
Paul
That's great.
Thanks!
This is a stupid question, but what is "Tech Range"? It's the pull-down choice in cell F8. What is it, and why is the default 2?
Thanks.
The tech range is used with the "Expanded Tech Levels" option on p.42 of the Core Rulebook.
My brother was putting his ships into the latest version of shipbiulder and noticed that the SU for his shields had changed and were costing more. I looked into it and discovered that the tech level modifier doesn't appear to be right. When I work it out by hand, a ship with a hull of 8, an engine rating of 6, and a shield rating of 5 at Tech level +1, the egine SU should be 439 and the shield SU should be 384. The shipbuilder gives the engine SU as 444 and the shield SU as 385.
I also noticed the the modifier for piercing is wrong. The core rules lists it as 1.5 and the shipbuilder as 1.4.
Thats because the shipbuilder uses square roots, while the book says 70%. I use the 70%/100%/140% rather than the square roots...

Um... that's not right. The book says 71%/100%/141%... :?:
Anyway, for a hull-8 ship, the engine factor is 103, while the shields factor is 108. For an engine rating of 6, the total SU cost is 618, and shields 5 takes 540 SUs.
Apply a .71 modifier to each for TL +1 and you get 439 and 384.
It would appear the problem in the Shipbuilder is that the TL mod is being applied BEFORE rounding, instead of afterwards. I'll fix it.
Reading this thread, I see that the shipbuilder is being tweaked. Where can I download the latest version? The mj12games.com home page only has version 2.1 available for download. Is that the latest version?
The version on the web site is always the most current... which, at this time, is 2.11 (including the tweak on when to apply TL mods).
2.11?
The version on the website says 2.1. Was "2.11" a typo, or is there really a version called 2.11? If the latter, where can I download it?
You can download it from the web site:

I just updated it, so you may need to re-download.

In the charts, but in the text it says that vessels with, for example, a +1 in Engines would multiply the SUs by 70%.
And the last sentence clears up another point for me. You round off, then apply TLs, then round again...
Thats that then.
I saw that the shipbuilder has been updated, but the piercing modifier is still wrong. It still says 1.4.

The text is wrong -- the chart is correct.

Indeed. This is what the Shipbuilder was doing wrong.

The modifier was changed to 1.4 in revision 1.0 of the rulebook.
The ISS, under C.4.1, says that combining No Range Modifiers & Range Based DMG is x2.2, but when I add these in the shipbuilder, I get x2.4.
Does version 2.11 handle combining ranged-based traits as listed in C.4.1 of the ISS?

Sorry, but I dislike 71/100/141 as I can't easily do it without a calculator. I prefer 70/100/140, as at least I've got a chance of working out the percentages without pulling out my calculator...

No.
The combination of range-based traits cannot be achieved through any mathematical process -- it is a subjective decision, which is why I had to include a chart in the book.

I purchased the electronic version of the rulebook. It says that it is version 0.0. How can I get version 1.0?

You do math without a calculator?!? I don't think I've done math (even basic math) without a calculator since '04
In jest...

Hehe...
Yeah, I can even design ships without looking at the book anymore. I only need a calculator when working out the cost, but the actual designing process I only need a calculator when double-checking. I can sometimes knock out an entire fleet in two hours or so...
I purchased the electronic version of the rulebook. It says that it is version 0.0. How can I get version 1.0?
You should have gotten a notice from RPGNow when the version was updated...

I just bought the electronic version also on 4/14 and it is revision 0.0. I have not gotten any notice from RPGNow about an update.
edit: Just went back and redownloaded the PDF's. Its still Revision 0.0.
My friend and I both bought copies from RPG now within the last few weeks and they were version 0.0. It would be nice to be able to get v 1.0.
