Re: Starmada Nova Comments

There was a request for a Bourbaki basin and Cricket said the Drydock was the NOVA equivalent.

[*]Where does all the 'buff' for each setting go?
[*]How are designs protected from overwriting by others?
[*]How are we going to identify related designs produced by people like murtalianconfederacy (who has more time on his hands than is good for him big_smile ) provide us with so-many different setting?
[*]If we all use it to develop ship designs how is the 'dross', which we will all create, going to be managed/deleted?
[*] How do you develop stuff before publishing?

While the Drydock is a marvelous tool it cannot replace "The Bourbaki Basin (NOVA). For it to do so, and I have some experience with software development, would be a significant development project and in all honesty this is a wargames forum not an open source development project.

In short we need the basin AND WE NEED IT NOW!! ... please.  smile

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

I agree. The drydock will create files and the bourbaki basin will store them.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

The following is based on my own rather limited knowledge of databases, although I have been working with the drydock since its inception.

Don't know...

mikeaxe wrote:

No one can overwrite files in a specific directory.
I believe any file can be overwritten that's stored in the sandbox.

mikeaxe wrote:

You simply go to his file. That's where all of his ships will be stored.

Ship designs that you want anyone to be able to edit save in the sandbox.
You do this by not logging in.
Files that you don't want anyone overwriting, but that you want players to be able to access, file in your own database.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

Honestly, one of the best parts of the Basin is having a place to discuss designs, especially the fact that it stores that discussion right there with the designs.  The drydock approach certainly allows more ships to be generated and posted more quickly, but the community discussion aspect is lacking.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

The Drydock is a fabulous tool, but not having a Bourbaki Basin, to augment it is overall a step backwards in the  Starmada community.  Think about it, the active players and the semi-trolls like me will be the primary people using the Drydock; the same people who spend a lot of time contributing to and reading the stuff that goes into the BASIN.  I hope MJ12 reconsiders.  Is there a financial reason to not have a 'Nova'  Basin we don't know about ?? (Server storage space costs or something?)

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

I must admit I'd like to see a Basin up as well. I haven't used the Drydock since the first day (and didn't complete the design as I hadn't had a thorough read-through), and I would like to see a Basin where I can put my designs and have it in the forum...

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

Hi Dan,
I love the DryDock and have made many designs that I have stored on my account there.  When you can get to it, an addition to the 'Basin for Nova Edition designs would be great. 8-)
(Dan may be thinking, Nag, nag, nag; that is all they do!  The players are like demanding teens. We are...<LOL>)

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

Dan,

Thanks for the Nova Bourbaki Basin !

Was confused for a sec when the link went to the Admiralty Basin,  hehehe.

I know you won't always be able to get us what we want (especially when WE sometimes have up to seven different opinions about a single subject), but you keep coming thru time and again.  Danke, Domo Arigato, Thanks !

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

Just realized that the tech levels have been combined into one.

I liked the other way, and wanted to use it for things like making my Evil Empire ships (that's how I think of my GZG NSL fleet) have +1 tech for weapons, while the opposing fleet might have it in engines or something.

I don't know if this was intended to be a simplification, or if Nova doesn't have room to differentiate.  But I'll miss it while designing.

Y'know, I agree. I liked the more differentiated system, and especially the fact that it made the components smaller, while the new system makes the ships have more available SUs - makes it seem like the higher TL implies higher TL of building materials (TL+2 ships are made of advanced laminates that take up less volume, while TL -2 ships are hollowed out asteroids, for example), without a subsequent boost in the size/space efficiency of the other components.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

There's no reason you can't use the different tech level categories in Nova -- as long as the combat rating is computed properly, the game won't break.

I agree...
And I guess I should be paying more attention to the finished product.  smile
My Excel sheet (from last summer) is set up with thrust tech, shield tech, and weapon tech levels.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

Ship design in Starmada is complicated enough that I can only really do what the ship builders allow.

So while it wouldn't break, I won't want to figure it out myself.

Or am I missing something and it is easy?

thanks

What categories do you want?  Engines and Weapons, and Misc are natural, but do fighters still warrant their own category?  Does each of the 3 defenses get its own, or should they be rolled together under one Defenses TL?  I might be able to fulfil such a request after this coming Wednesday.

My XL sheet breaks it down into three categories: Weapons, Thrust, and Shields.
Though I'm guessing you could break it down into as many categories as you want.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

How about Tech levels (only changes end SU figures for space used):

Engines.
Defence Systems (except Fragile & Reinforced systems) based on defense score.
Offence Systems (including *AUX?)
Weapon Batteries.
Carrier.
*Auxiliary separate?

Paul

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

I haven't spent enough time in the rules to know.  But I did use the weapon tech level before, and might use thrust.

andy

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

In regards to the "forward weapons cost more" sub thread:

Instead of making it cost more, how about capping the SU that can face forward.  In Sword of the Stars, other than dedicated lancer ships, ships fired most weapons out of their broadsides.  There is much less surface area to mount weapons on on your nose than on your flanks.

Re: Starmada Nova Comments

Unless your ship is broader than is longer. After all, in space, you don't care about aerodynamic. A cube is as good as anything.

Given my engines are in the back because I am using thrust and not a stutter drive or something, I will move in the direction of my front.  If I want to vaporize you and yours, I'll be traveling towards you.  I hella want my presented silo... silah... shooty target to be as small as possible.

It doesn't matter in starmada and in many other games - but of course there are also many games where it does.  Guess we won't be finding out the truth of that in this lifetime  wink
