This is how I show Faceted shields in Drake Notation with the shipyard.
This is a hull 5 ship with Nine "Facets".

Faceted Shielding: [F:3 2 1] [FP:2 1] [FS:2 1] [AP:1] [AS:1] [A:0] [ 9 8 6 4 2 ]

This way the facets can be marked off if the Drake Notation is copied into a ship's notes in Vassal.

OK, I admit, I wrote it for Jay (VBAM GAmes) and he passed it on to Dan.

There is also a bit in the shipyard guide. (Ignore the 2nd Edition stuff in that, it has been revised since but I do not have details). I believe that jay has been going through the 2nd Edition of VBAM recently (latest version), no idea as to when it might be released though.

Where is the best place to post question about and issues with Klingon/Romulan/Alien/Distant Armada? I ask because I posted over in the Federation Commander Forum on Friday but there has been no answer yet. I know it is possible the mj12games is busy due to Origins. If that is the case, I will be patient. If it is better to post here, I will be happy to copy the posts over here.

The best place? Right here. You may find that some questions have already been asked. I took the liberty of putting a couple of your questions here.

Andromedan wrote:

I played a demo with other people yesterday and I realized something reading the rules for Distant Armada and that is if you roll and the damage is to be taken of the facing shield and the amount of damage to the applied to the shield is greater than the facing there is no rule covering what to do.

For example, if your internal damage is Shield and the change in the amount of shielding is 3 points, but the facing shield only has 2 boxes. What happens with the 3rd point? Is it then assigned by the players discretion to another shield, is it assigned to a neighboring shield or is it ignored? My assumption is the first one but it is defined in the rulebook.

Controlling player decides which facing the 3rd point is deducted from.

Andromedan wrote:

Does the "Emergency Thrust" rule only apply to the Orions?

I ask because I do not see any special notation on the Orion ships saying that it applies only to them. I know that there is a "Orion Engine Doubling" rule that applies only to Orions. So I am thinking it only applies to them given that.

This is part of the core rules and can be used with any ship. It is only modified for Orions.

Overload particle cannon looks like it was missed from the data cards I am not familiar with Seltorian ships though. You could enter the data into one of the spreadsheets and print your own amended ones.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is wanting to run a scan when Adobe reader 10.1.0 opens a file and that is causing the delay.

I recently had OpenOffice 3 taking ages to open and the spreadsheets would seem to freeze for a short while if I wanted to change something like format some cells. I had to make calc a "trusted" application and change the setting so that it would not be scanned every time it carried out an instruction.
I would check to see if the settings were different between 10.0 and 10.1

Drone Rack (4) means the ship has 4 Racks (or Flights) of Drones in total for the battle. Yes, a ship having "drone Rack" only has a single Rack (or Flight) to launch.

Any Photon torpedo weapon Fired in Overload had to wait a turn.

Since anyone looking in at the forum might wonder as well and look here; I am going to ask.

What is a SFU ship?
SAE, ISS, H&C, DRN, IRN, KLA RMA ALA and now SFO ships can be gleaned from the products.
SFA (Star Fleet Armada) makes sense but SFU?
I know Dan coined it asking for ship requests but does not say what it stands for since the thread then asks about SFA ships.

You will find that the ships in KA use more SU than the hull sizes normally allow, this is why the KA/SFO ships use more SU than the hulls allow. I think this has been questioned in threads before.
The conversion was as near as possible (I believe) but the resulting weapons have a high cost and added to the number on the ship  pushes the SU cost over the normal limit.

I do not know how the shield values were carried over but I can tell you that the KA to SFU is the avarage shield rating +1.
Note, I also added the +1 to the Screens and KEB after getting the equivalent shield rating.

Sorry, I just have to ask.
Why save it as a .xlt file?
I have always posted the shipyard as a .xls file to work with excel and openoffice.

Which shipbuilder are you using?

The last message from FSS Prince Brucie was "We are in orbit around Saturn, the crew do not feel well. We were going to leave but it looks like small ships in the rings."

The Klipons had believed that they were the only life in the universe, so it was a complete surprise then an alien ship crashed on Titan. The crew had been killed by radiation from Saturn, radiation which was a part of the Klipons life requirement. Long had they travelled to the mother's rings to gather whatever was needed but they had no desire to go further. These aliens could pose a danger, the ship was clearly armed. The greatest Klipon minds worked at taking the alien ship apart and designing their own. The DeZeven made use of as much of the alien ship as possible, some of the guns were salvaged and working from these the Klipons made more. The torpedoes were improved becoming Disbruptor pods. The first of many, The Krarg was named after the last thing a scientist said when killed by a faulty light bulb! smile

Have fun.

Evening, everyone -

While I am on a quest to locate players here in Calgary, I am trying to build up the material needed to play the game.

Can anyone point me to downloadable hex maps (kind of like the semi colored map you can get from this site) as well as things like asteroids, planets, black holes, that sort of thing that I can print out and use for the game?

Even generic ships to use as counters?

Thanks in advance if you can help in this matter.

Chris

My free sourcebooks in the file section each have a page of counters that can be printed straight onto card.

Paul

Dan any thought on the modifiers for the AP at a closer range only?
Also, the save for infantry is not shown on the counters, just a Red N. How about replacing the Armour on the Infantry counters with an orange number for the save roll required?
Example below.

Thanks.
I have revised the conversion chart above.
Here is the Human force list. These are avarage figures, as in real life, the unit size would change and did quite a bit.
Paul

Thanks.
All I have at the moment is a conversion chart for Humans (Napoleonic). Aliens would have their own style, like the units that can carry troops (APC), bit like big bugs. Reptilians, Ape like ones that have symbiotic "riders". The actual alien types could be endless but they are all restricted to their own versions of Musket, lances and cannon. Humans only get an APC if they build ships (nice Napoleonic sailing ships that is).
I thought "Musket, Lance and Alien" would be a fair title for a pdf.
Certain weapons should have a close range advantage so I added some fluff. Lances for example giving AP +1 but at only Range 1 (as close as it can get). Cannon having AP +1 or +2 but only at a range of 2 or 3.
I thought of showing the AP range by putting a colour behind the AP on the counter, Green for 1, Dark Blue for 2 and Dark Red for 3.
The actual units stats depend upon the number of troops available but including pre made types for ready use. Budding Napoleons (or Big Noses) can start their own empire, colour their own uniforms and set forth to fight.
Sorry starting to sound like a salesman. smile
Conversion chart below.(Units with speed 0 are 0/1)
Thoughts?

Been making notes for a QL setting.
Species from all over have been kidnapped, brainwashed and set up on new planets.
Technology except medical fixed in 19th Century Earth.
Also with an eye to being used for Napoleonic style QL.
Any thoughts?

Bought, downloaded and printed mine last night, I like it. smile
Starmada conversion in a spreadsheet though, AArgh, pages 28 to 31 are a (insert own word here) nightmare.
Also a few things like Command could have done with Starmada figures (even if they are not used in a Starmada game.) The way I put the optional VBAM equipment figures in the shipyard for construction only.
Got most of a sheet going for Fleet Ops, still have to decide on how many ships/types to put on one sheet (maybe five).

So it sounds like Increased Damage and Increased Impact are synonyms?  Or is it that the name of Increased Impact has been changed to Increased Damage?

Thanks,

No it has not changed to increased damage. "Increased Damage" was from Starmada X and got left in the shipbuilder by mistake as a ship weapon trait. "Increased DMG" is a fighter only trait.

I assumed (which i should not) that you used the shipbuilder for the Grumm ships causing the wrong entry.

BTW Dan the official shipbuilder on the Catalogue/Starmada page is just a garbled mess at the moment.

God! I hope not.

Is there Aegis in FC? I am fairly sure that the designers notes said that some things would/could not be converted to Starmada.

Oh, hang on Aegis, yes that is in Vol.17 Chapter 22 page 3078. That is if SFB lawyer/players get their hands on re-writing Starmada rules. smile

Testing my new spreadsheet I just could not help having a Laugh for April 1st. lol

The British Government having to make cutbacks in the Ether Force put out a tender for a new Heavy Cruiser.
The Federated Steam & Steel Co. put forward the lowest figure which was taken.
Mostly made from plate and loads of bolts it differs in style from other Royal Navy ships. The FSS was informed that due to an MOD overspend on light bulbs the government could not afford engines as such but there was a surplus of ex-forces personnel. A bright spark had the idea of tubes with seating, thus allowing crew to crank the propellers!

Thus was Born/Bolted the FSS Harry

ORAT calculations on page 41 of the core rules:
4 for each battery of guns....

My question is: Light guns are not shown after "c" (for secondary battery) so, are light guns included (implied) and are they calculated as per the primary battery?

I know it is a bit late asking this but I thought I would do my own spreadsheet to print out the ship cards.
I think that the original spreadsheet included the light guns as per the primary battery (broken file last time I looked).
Just thought I would ask since the secondary are divided by 2.

Thanks, Paul

You do not need Excel to use the shipbuilder or alternate versions in the "Files". Open Office has a spreadsheet called calc, As part of an office suite. It is free and can be found at www.openoffice.org (It will open quite a few different microsoft office files).
