I can officially report that the problems with POD were a result of our files; they were the wrong dimensions, and apparently Lulu's automation couldn't cope.

I revised our files to fit 8.5x11, and got my copy of The Merchant War yesterday -- it is SWEET. smile

Life is good again...

Depends on your point of view, I suppose. smile

Two things, tho...

1) This is just a sample, and

2) "Eden" is the type of world, not the name. "Cassia Primus" is the name of the system.

Really? I put in the colored boxes to avoid having the numbers -- I thought this was a nice effect.

oh, yeah and these are the coolest things I have ever seen, they rival the TI 3rd edition graphics in quality.

Well, I wouldn't go that far... I have already found things I would like to change... but thanks for the encouragement. smile

Here's a sample of what I'm thinking for a system tile in the 3rd edition of Sovereign Stars:

The "$" is the system's income, while the "#" represents its population.

I'm glad to hear from a long-time fan... smile

However, I'm not sure what you mean by 4x gaming?

As far as SovStars goes, I am working on a "meatier" revision to the game-- however, it prolly won't ever be more than a hefty board game (more involved than checkers, less so than F&E...). For something truly flexible, with options for RPG integration and true conversion between the strategic and tactical levels, might I suggest you take a look at Victory By Any Means (VBAM)?

In addition to sounding like what you are looking for, it has the added benefit of a soon-to-be-released Starmada tie-in product...

In pickup games that included dogfights, the frigging Astro 101 "Sprite" gave my Austrian pilots a lot of headaches, as their Hale Rockets don't suffer range penalties and hit on a 5+.  On average, a Sprite could take out a couple of Harpunes at little risk to itself before the torpedo bombers even reached their targets.

Makes one wonder if the Goalkeeper shouldn't sacrifice a couple MGs for some rockets?

Is there a need to roll night/day for battles taking place in the belt?  There's no planet to block the sun.  Also anyone have an educated guess as to how far away from the sun you'd have to be before searchlights become mandatory?

I guess the answer would be "no"... all fights within the cluster would be "daylight".

As far as distance before searchlights are mandatory, I'd say we don't need to worry about that at least until we take the fight to Mars. smile

Are freighters and stations equipped with searchlights?  And what about fighters?  (I have this mental image of a group of flashlights duct taped to the outside of a fighter.   big_smile )

Huh. Stations should have 'em... freighters not so much. FACs, I dunno.

And I think there ought to be an option to add searchlights.  All alone in the dark a ship like the Goalkeeper is going to have a heckuva time trying to pick out fighters without help or additional searchlights.

I guess that's possible. What seems a fair SU price?

Okay... just to be clear; by "it definitely left me wanting more", you mean "it was great and I can't wait to see what's next", not "it was lacking something", right?

Do stations have the ability to use Torpedo Nets?  The rules state that all ships size medium and larger have them.  Does that apply to stations?  Seems the only drawback would be that the station then could not make it's 45 degree turn.

The space station does not have torpedo nets. (Insert techno-babble reason why not here...)

Dammit.

Damn damn damn.

I knew I'd forget something. sad

FACs are only hit by a mine on a roll of 9-10 per 1" moved. This is how we playtested it, and while moving through the minefield is still very dangerous, odds are good that at least some will survive long enough to attack the Queen.

in response to Rich,

I wonder whether is Dan's musing more along the lines of whether an actual print run is still necessary (as nice as it would be)

Would the statement, 'with POD, this should satisfy the requirements of folks who want a hardcopy' be thus true?

Personally for me the answer is yes.

I think this is correct. Even though we've been very happy with our "real" printers, and they allow us to do relatively small print runs, especially for non-Starmada products the idea of true POD is very appealing. No risk to us, but the customer can still have a hardcopy if he/she wishes.
