The idea that Larger ships are more vulnerable to fighters than smaller ships certainly was not the case in WW2.  The battleship USS Missouri had many, many more AA guns than any US Destroyers.  The larger a ship is, the more A weapons it can mount.  I make sure all of my ships have batteries that are good at firing at fighters...
Otherwise your opponant could bring some fighters, and have his ships destroy your escorts and then have the fighters ravage your almost defenseless Big Ships...

I Used to play Starfire a lot before discovering other games.  It was simple & elegent.   You could not design ur own weapons, but could design ships.  It was like Battletech in that reguard.

In Starfire, Energy Beams ignored Armor completely!  But compared to Force Beams which hit shields and armor they had a shorter range & cost more.  There was a device that could be installed on Starmada Starships thad absorbed some of this damage.  These were called Overload Dampeners and each could absorb/delete one point of Energy Beam dammage per turn. An option, if you got zapped badly by energy beams, it could absorb 3 points and then was burned out, destroyed.

Lasers of all types ignored shields.  They were shorter ranged than Force Beams also.  A counter, when designing a ship, was to use reflective armor.  It cost more than regular armor, but halved laser beam damage, rounding down.

Then there were primary beams!  They only fired once every other turn and ignored shields & armor.  They were very expensive & shorter ranged than force beams. 

Ships I designed in that game always had shields, laser-reflective armor, and a few Overload Dampeners.  There were several types of missiles & Point Defence units that could attempt to shot them down.  My ships had a few of them also.

This looks great!
I have several questions.
Where is the link if any, to the pdf that has the rules; Is there a cost to it?
I have downloaded the DryDock, and have designed several ships already.  Is there a list of the abreviations used for the weapon abilities.  So far, I have a USS Arizona with two batteries of weapons that have no SAs...
It does not seem to have a high CR... :shock:

This sounds like it will make the game more complicated.  Even in StarFleetBattles, which was Very Complicated, shields protected a ship from all types of attacks.  Starmada needs to keep shields like.  But to accomodate those who like the more complicated version of shields, the three types, perhaps these could be an optional rule...

I designed t he "Large Dreadnought"  USS ARIZONA today using the link in this thread.  I look forward to this game coming online soon.  I was unsure hot to add any Special Equipment such as Fire Control, or other extra stuff. Also unsure how to add weapon traits such as Piercing, ect. 
I definitely look forward to the Nova Edition and find this Dry Dock to be fun to fiddle with.  Keep up the Good Work! 8-)

This looks great!  I used to play Full Thrust b4 discovering Starmada.  The SSDs for the ships in that game used all sumbols.  It was easy to just mark the systems off when they were wrecked... 8-)

I remember that in Starmada"X" there were Overthrusters that could be installed on ships.  These were used after movement and seemed to be a sharp left or right turn; "hard-a-port! or "hard-a-starboard".  I installed it on all my ships.  The ship changed direction by one hex-side (60 degrees) and remained that way at the end of the turn. 8-)
Could this be an option in Starmada Nova Edition?

:idea: Just put a dot on, or underline those weapons that fired during the anti-fighter phase.  I don't think that this would be difficult.  I place all my ship sheets in a clear plastic sheet protector and use an overhead projector marker to keep track of damage, etc.

When I play in South Florida at Gaming Glenn's store, we use the movement system from Full Thrust.  It works well; you can still make a turn even if you are going faster than your thrust rating. 8-)

In the game "StarFleetBattles" There were impulse charts for speeds of up to 8, 16, and 32.  I am sure that these could be used for Starmada.  It would make movement a bit more detailed, but time consuming, but if players wanted to use them, they could.  In SFBs, if a ship fired during the last quarter of the movement, it could not fire its weapons at the beginning of the next turn, but had to wait til a quarter of a turn passed.  For example, if using the 32 impulse chart, as long as your ship fired by movement-impulse 24, it could fire again the first impulse of the next turn.  But if it fired after impulse 24, it could Not fire until the number if impulses into the new turn have passed equal to the number of turns after impulse 24 of the turn b4.  IMHO, I don't think this would cause harm, but would add time to the game...

Earlier it was asked about making larger hull sizes for Starmada(AE) ships.  My nephew has added onto the ship builder program to make ships up to 60 hull.  The large hull/engines/shieds blocks are on the top as usual, etc.  It does make for some powerful ships, but they are very  S L O W  as well as powerful  given their slow speed and the ease of predicting hwere they will be next turn, it is easy to swarm them with many small ships.  Sort of like many PT Boats attacking the Yamato or Musashi in WW2. 8-)

Interesting idea.  Fighters don't get used much in the games I play because they are fairly easy to shoot down.  All of my ships have range 18 "Laser Cannon" that combined with 3+ to hit and FC make it difficult for fighters to survive in open space.  They would be more survivable if there is terrain tho, such as a planed or asteriods to hide behind...

I guess with the new vwesion of Starmada coming just around the corner, this discussion could become irrelevant.

Perhaps the solution is to give weapons with the AF trait the OPTION to fire after fighters/strikers/seekers have moved, but before the flight attacks.  If their are are no fighters or if the weapons with AF don't fire in the fighter phase, they can fire in the regular starship combat phase. 
This would make weapons with AF more similiar to WW2 dual-purpose weapons such as the USA's 5"/38 guns.  These guns could fire in AA mode at aircraft or at ships.
