There are some major differences in playing Star Fleet Battles and Klingon & Romulan Armada! SFB gamers beware!

First, let it be known that we use house rules for or Starmada, Klingon, & Romulan Armada games. We plot our movement with the "Brian rule", I.E. - Section D.1 Basic Movement. It's easier for us. We use the regular Starmada shield rules in KA & RA. The ship's shields equal the strongest facet.

In SFBs, when playing a Klingon, I usually closed to close (knife fighting) range. Now I strongly recommend keeping your distance and taking advantage of the long range weapons at your disposal. Use this tactic with whatever race or ship you're piloting.

The Gorns are no longer slow at maneuvering. No more flying bath tubs!!

Use your drones and tractor beams!!!

Once the opponent's shields are down surprise them with boarding parties. Capturing a ship does wonders to your career regardless of what race you're playing.

I'm working on translating SFB scenarios over the Stamada terms. Will add more tactics as my experience with the game grows.

I will say this... Starmada, Klingon Armada, and Romulan Armada area a damn sight better than the original SFB rules!!!!!!

Just some ideas that are bouncing around in my head.

Feel free with the feedback.

Civilian Ships.
Small Freighters - up to 4 hull.
Large Freighters - 5 to 9 hull.
Passenger Transport - 4 to 9 hull. Size dependent.

Military Ships
Frigates/Destroyers - 4, 5, 6 hull.
Cruisers - 10, 11, 12 hull.
Dreadnoughts - 16 & higher hull.
Space Stations - 20+ hull.

I wish the hull could be raised over 24 so we could make some truly vast things... Deathstars, Leviathans, Borg Cubes, Planet Killers, etc...

Just wondering why they were given letter designations. I would have thought that a more meaningful description would have been more helpful. A = FP (Forward Port), B = FS (Forward Starboard), C = P (Port), D = S (Starboard), E = AP (Aft Port), F = AS (Aft Starboard).

Don't get me wrong... I love the game and I will get used to the ABCDEF Arcs. I just thought the above would make it more easy for a newcomer.

The Starfist series is fantastic, but it a dirtside pounding grunt series, not a space combat series.  wink

This is the first time I have heard of the Leary-Mundy series. Since I like Drake's Hammer's Slammers I'm going to have to check these out.

So if you down-scaled everything you could have a Star Destroyer with 6 Turbolaser Batteries, 6 Ion Cannon Batteries, 1 Tractor beam and 6 flights of Tie Fighters.

Simply divide by 10. I like this!

Going to check out that website.

(edit) I just found this. Might be helpful.

even the smallest Star Destroyers have an insane number of weapons.

---- Maybe they're "range-based ROF"? It always seemed to me that the closer a SW ship was to their target the more shots were fired.

And Buckaroo Bonzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers are AWESOME!

My son (age 9) and I squared off to smash each other's ship.

He had a Federation Heavy Cruiser (like the Enterprise) and I had a Klingon D7 (a close match).

We played using the old Star Fleet Battles counters and map.

On turn 3 he fired off 4 photon torpedoes. 3 hit my ship. Only one pierced my shields. Damage done - hull and 3 engine hits. This was the start of what happened through out the game.

I closed to "knife fighting" distance, confident that my faster ship would have the advantage. No way did that happen.

While I scored hits and weakened his shields a lot, but he still pounded my engines down. Bad die rolls kept me from scoring hits and what did hit failed to penetrate his weakened shields. After 6 turns I claimed the Klingon commander stood from his command chair, drew his disruptor pistol, and executed the the weapon's officer on the spot. Sure enough I started getting better die rolls!

But it was too late.

I couldn't maneuver fast enough to bring my primary weapons to bear... my disruptors.

The Federation scum won!   But it was worth seeing my son jumping and dancing, singing "I did it" repeatedly... like some demented Sponge Bob.

I was forgiving with his plotted movement because it was his first try at the game and his age. Not so next time.

I hope to have a Hotz mat in a couple of months and then we'll play with micro-machine miniatures. I'll try to include pics then.

Good little game.

Are they going to be making a Scenario Book for these? I would buy it in a micro-second!!

I still have the SFB rule book and am planning to convert over my favorite scenarios (The Lone Grey Wolf, The Planet Killer, etc.) but I would like to see an "official" product.

Hello everyone!

I just watched a game of Starmada at a local used-book/gaming store today.

Needless to say I walked out of the place.... with a copy of Starmada Core Rulebook & Klingon Armada clutched in my greedy hands!!! And Romulan Armada will be had next week!!!

I'm and old Star Fleet Battles player (I played it when it was still a zip-lock baggie game!!!) who grew tired of the complicated rules and excessive rules-lawyers that the game bred in my area. The Klingon and Romulan Armada's were seen with great interest and feelings of hope.

I love the spaceship combat genre, but would like to know if any of my other beloved genres are being considered for future supplements?....

Age of Sail and/or Modern Naval conflict (loved GDW's Harpoon miniatures/counters game)

That's all for now.

Later,
Warren
