My son (age 9) and I squared off to smash each other's ship.

He had a Federation Heavy Cruiser (like the Enterprise) and I had a Klingon D7 (a close match).

We played using the old Star Fleet Battles counters and map.

On turn 3 he fired off 4 photon torpedoes. 3 hit my ship. Only one pierced my shields. Damage done - hull and 3 engine hits. This was the start of what happened through out the game.

I closed to "knife fighting" distance, confident that my faster ship would have the advantage. No way did that happen.

While I scored hits and weakened his shields a lot, but he still pounded my engines down. Bad die rolls kept me from scoring hits and what did hit failed to penetrate his weakened shields. After 6 turns I claimed the Klingon commander stood from his command chair, drew his disruptor pistol, and executed the the weapon's officer on the spot. Sure enough I started getting better die rolls!

But it was too late.

I couldn't maneuver fast enough to bring my primary weapons to bear... my disruptors.

The Federation scum won!   But it was worth seeing my son jumping and dancing, singing "I did it" repeatedly... like some demented Sponge Bob.

I was forgiving with his plotted movement because it was his first try at the game and his age. Not so next time.

I hope to have a Hotz mat in a couple of months and then we'll play with micro-machine miniatures. I'll try to include pics then.

Good little game.
