I'm not sure you actually cross off Engine boxes.

Reading the secton on Emergency Thrust it just says your Engine Rating is reduced by 1 for each 1 rolled, so I would just keep track of it and reduce your current Engine Rating (whatever it is after combat damage) but that much.

I am curious as to where the Carrier rating for the Correllian Corvette has come from.

It doesn't carry fighters in the films (other than Obi-wan's that it takes into what is probably a general purpose shuttle bay) and the only ones in the Expanded Universe novels that carry fighters are notes as being fairly major conversions.

Also, it appears that some shots from the Star Destroyer at the start of Episode IV are impacting on shields so shouldn't this have an Aft facet of 1 (Shields 6) to represent this?

The Pak'ma'ra
The Pak'ma'ra are traders with a bad reputation – they are carrion eaters.

However, the Pak'ma'ra are found in just about every spaceport in every corner of the galaxy.  As no one wants to have anything to do with them they are generally not noticed, becoming part of the background – something that espionage chiefs have started to realise.

Fighters
Por'fa'tis – a fast light fighter

Or'ti'nam – it is rather surprising, but the Pak'ma'ra do occasionally use breaching pods.

Ships
While the Pak'ma'ra do have a few dedicated warships, the majority are well armed merchant ships.  Their ships are generally not as sturdy as the combat vessels of other races.  It probably also doesn't help that the Pak'ma'ra are probably the least tactically competent race in the galaxy.
They only use plasma weapons which are mostly short-ranged and not much use against fighters, but they also have the plasma web which projects a short range plasma field to damage fighters (represented as Anti-Fighter Batteries).

Shaveen Patrol Cutter (In Service 2254)
Prior to the Earth-Minbari War, the Minbari didn't really have a raider problem – any raider ship that entered Minbari space generally encountered a Sharlin and shortly afterwards was a cloud of debris.  As the Minbari become more involved in the affairs of the galaxy, and others became more interested in their territory and technology, they decided that they needed a small patrol ship to ensure that others were suitably discouraged from intruding on their territory.
The design is similar in form the White Star and is capable of operations in a planetary atmosphere.

Leshath Heavy Scout (In Service 1995)
This large scout is built on the Tigara hull, but adds a jump engine to allow independent operation.
A few were deployed at the start of the Earth-Minbari War but were withdrawn once it was discovered that regular Minbari ships possessed sensor arrays far in advance of the human ones, and it was decided not to risk the valuable Leshaths.

Sharlin War Cruiser (In Service 2058)
The latest of a long line of Minbari cruisers, each based on and improving a design first seen in 1254.  During the Earth-Minbari War Sharlins were used as the main striking arm of the Minbari fleet with small ships only being used to protect supply trains.  This resulted in most Earth Alliance fleets being totally overwhelmed as they only ever saw the front line cruisers.

Tigarin Patrol Cruiser (In Service 2059)
With the move away from short-ranged molecular weaponry the Minbari upgraded their Tigara cruisers to the new Tigarin design.  While not as well equipped as a Sharlin they could fill in for them in most circumstances.

Shargotti Battlecruiser (In Service 2112)
For those times they needed something bigger than a Sharlin, the Minbari had the Shargotti.  Used more to make a point, by only sending one ship, than as fleet flagships.  One Shargotti was destroyed during the Earth-Minbari War – by nuclear mines concealed on asteroids rather than by weapons fire.

Troligan Armoured Cruiser (In Service 2166)
The Troligan is something of an experiment by the Minbari.  The intent was to see if they could build a ship that could close to point blank range of enemy vessels, relying in a reinforced hull and stealth systems to get there, before destroying them with close-range weaponry.
The Minbari did not consider the vessels a success.

Neshatan Gunship (In Service 2251)
One of the few newly designed warships in the Minbari fleet, the Neshatan reverses the usual ration of neutron lasers to fusion cannon to create a devastating vessel.  Due to the strains put on the hull and power systems only a few were built.

The Minbari Federation
For the Minbari I have broken the ships down into Frigates, Cruisers, and others.  Most ships are based on hull types that have been around for centuries with the equipment on them being updated as necessary.  Prior to the development of the White Star using, in part, Vorlon technology, there had been almost no improvement in Minbari ships for 150 years.

The majority of Minbari warships are crewed by the Warrior Caste, but a few are operated by the Religious Caste (to defend pilgrimage route and religious centres) or the Worker Caste (as system defense ships).

The main problem other races have when dealing with the Minbari is that ship for ship they outmatch almost everyone else.  To defeat them you need to bring 3 or 4 times as many ships to the fight and most races don't have that many ships that they can deploy in one place without leaving themselves open to attack elsewhere.


The Frigates

Torotha Assault Frigate (In Service 2006)
Capable of atmospheric operations, the Minbari use the Torotha to deliver troops to a planet rather than shuttles.  They are not intended to enter combat with other vessels.

The Letann is a small scout built on an earlier version of the Tinashi hull.  Intended to accompany frigate squadrons in the same way the Leshath was to accompany cruiser squadrons, the Letann fell out of favour and was relegated to escort and anti-raider duties.

Esharan Anti-Fighter Frigate (In Service 2063)
On occasion the Minbari have wanted to take prisoners for questioning but the firepower of most of their ships doesn't leave much behind.  The Esharan uses some directed EMP weapons to knock out enemy fighters so the pilot can be captures for later interrogation.

Following a refit Babylon 5 was a much tougher nut to crack with extra weaponry, extra hull plating, and twice as many fighters.  All the new equipment was put to the test during the Civil War when the station was attacked by loyalist forces.

Heavy Orbital Satellite Beta (In Service 2252)
A variant of the above using a heavy particle cannon rather than the twin lasers.  At the end of the Civil War, these satellites were turned on Earth.  Fortunately they were destroyed before they could fire.

Explorer Alpha Survey Ship (In Service 2253)
A huge vessel designed for long range exploration and jump gate construction.  Given that it is unknown what the ship may run into it is quite well armed.

Hermes Beta Priority Transport (In Service 2168)
A military transport designed to operate by itself rather than as part of a convoy.  If attacked it will usually open a jump point and run rather than trying to stand and fight.
They originally carried a flight of Tiger Starfuries (Carrier 38, CR 155) before getting the Nova in 2230 (Carrier 44, CR 161) and finally the Aurora in 2244.

Oracle Gamma Scout Cruiser (In Service 2216)
The Oracle hull was an attempt to pass on some of the costs of warship development to other races, being intended to be exported to other races.  Unfortunately, other races weren't willing to buy something the Earth Alliance wasn't willing to use itself.  Used as both an exploration ship and a fleet scout, the Earth Alliance found a use for some of the unwanted Oracle hulls.

Orestes Gamma System Monitor (In Service 2219)
Based on an old system defence battleship design, the Orestes is best thought of as a mobile (just about) space station.  While most were retained in Earth space during the Dilgar War a number were used to defend forward supply bases.  Most of those were sold to the Gaim after the war rather than having to bring them home and repair and refit them.
Originally carrying the Tiger Starfury (Carrier 76, CR 238), they upgraded to the new Nova in 2230 (Carrier 88, CR 251).  Those few left in service in 2244 received the Aurora.

Those Orestes that stayed in Earth space were upgraded with new technology as it became available.  Due to their slow speed they could not escape the Minbari advance and most were destroyed.  Those few that survived continued to protect colony worlds.

Sagittarius Beta Missile Cruiser (In Service 2230)
Designed to provide long range firepower for fleet engagements, the lack of a jump engine prevents the Sagittarius from operating independently.  This probably a good thing given the minimal defensive weaponry.
The last ships of this class were destroyed during the Earth-Minbari War.

Tantalus Alpha Assault Transport (In Service 2238)
In appearance the Tantalus is somewhere between the Nova and the Omega and is the first Earth Alliance ship to use a rotating section to generate artifical gravity in order to provide better accommodations for the troops.  Up to 2244 it would carry Nova Starfuries (Carrier 372, CR 616).  It then switched to Aurora Starfuries (Carrier 376, CR 621) until the Thunderbolt became available in 2259 and the ship finally carried fighters capable of escorting the shuttles all the way to the combat zone and then providing air support.

Earth Alliance – The New Ships
Following the Civil War, the Earth Alliance gained new technology from joining the Interstellar Alliance.  They then used that to create a group of new ships, all of which had true artificial gravity.


Apollo Alpha Bombardment Cruiser (In Service 2264)
A much needed replacement for the aging Sagittarius missile cruisers, the Apollo is a much better ship and is capable of independent operations as it has its own jump drive.  The Apollo has the same number of missile racks as the earlier vessel, but more secondary weaponry for self defence.

Cronos Alpha Attack Frigate (In Service 2266)
A replacement for both the Artemis and Olympus, the Cronos still retains the old railguns but it does possess a much more rounded armament.  As the Cronos is intended to close with the enemy it was decided not to mount missile racks like those found on the Olympus.

Warlock Alpha Advanced Destroyer (In Service 2261)
First of the new generation of ships, the prototype Warlock was designed and built prior to joining the Interstellar Alliance, but quickly upgraded with new technology.  To save space the Warlock uses the laser pulse arrays found on the Nova.  While the heavy particle cannon, normally only found on fixed defences, has a slower rate of fire than the heavy laser cannon found on the Omega, the increased accuracy was considered more useful.
Originally intended to replace the Omega, the Warlock is instead used as a flagship.

Q-Ship (Gamma version) (In Service 2196)
This is designed to look like the standard commercial freighter, but instead of cargo pods it carries heavy weaponry and a flight of fighters.  The idea is to insert the ship into civilian shipping lanes and log it as carrying a valuable, but not too valuable, cargo and see who bites.
Originally using the same Delta-V as the raiders themselves (Carrier 40, CR 100), Q-Ships started to use the Tiger Starfury in 2203 (Carrier 38, CR 98) and the Nova in 2230 (Carrier 44, CR 104) before getting the Aurora in 2244.
Other races used similar ships with their own weaponry and fighters.

Earth Alliance – The Carriers
While most Earth Alliance cruisers carry some fighters, there are also a few dedicated carriers.


Avenger Beta Heavy Carrier (In Service 2203)
In service during the Dilgar War, this ship brought the large to battle the large numbers of the new Starfury fighters that the Earth Alliance needed to counter the Dilgar Thorun fighters.  As each flight has its own hanger, the large number of fighters can be launched quickly.  The reliance on plasma weaponry leaves the Avenger with limited anti-fighter defences.
The ship originally carried the Tiger Starfury (Carrier 304, CR 471), upgrading to the Nova Starfury in 2230 (Carrier 352, CR 525), and those still in service received the Aurora Starfury in 2244.  Irrespective of the fighter carried there would still only be 8 flights.

Avenger Gamma Heavy Carrier (In Service 2240)
With the development of pulse weapons after the Dilgar War, later Avengers had weapons better suited to defending a fleet carrier, a slightly reinforced hull, and bigger engines.
Over time the Avenger fell out of favour as newer ships could carry large numbers of fighters and boasted better firepower.  The last Avenger was destroyed during the Civil War.
Originally carrying the Nova Starfury (Carrier 352, CR 549), they got the Aurora in 2244.

Poseidon Alpha Supercarrier (In Service 2255)
For those times when you absolutely have to have more fighters than anyone else there is the Poseidon.  One of the newer Earth Alliance ships, the Poseidon has a huge forward hanger deck with rapid launch capability and a small spun habitat section at the rear.  Weaponry is aimed at protecting the ship from enemy fighters that break through its own fighter screen.
The first Poseidon carried Aurora Starfuries (Carrier 736, CR 1018) but they used the Thunderbolt from 2259.

Earth Alliance – The Omega Destroyer
Brought into service after the disastrous Earth-Minbari War, the Omega quickly became the main ship-of-the-line for the Earth Alliance fleet.  Designed to try to match the capabilities of the Minbari cruisers, the Omega carries both heavy weaponry and a large fighter complement.  The Omega was the first Earth Alliance ship to have artificial gravity, by way of a central spun section, making it more comfortable for the crew on long patrols.


Omega Alpha Destroyer (In Service 2250)
The initial Omega design and the most common.  A mix of heavy lasers and pulse cannons are carried for engaging enemy warships, while the large particle beam battery keeps enemy fighters at bay.
The Omega originally carried the Aurora Starfury (Carrier 184, CR 418) before the Thunderbolt became available in 2259.

Designed as a fleet flagship, the Gamma version used heavier versions of the laser-pulse array found on the Nova to carry more heavy weaponry.  These weapons suffered the main maintenance problems as their small cousins, resulting in only a few of this variant being produced.

Omega Epsilon Destroyer (In Service 2260 only)
Designed by a covert design group within the Earth Alliance, the Epsilon is a fusion of Earth and Shadow technology.  While the basic hull is that of an Omega it has the energy diffusion spines of a Shadow vessel and the regular weaponry has been replaced with Shadow weapons.  It is believed that all ships of this design were destroyed in combat with the White Star Fleet during the Earth Alliance Civil War, but only at great cost.

Earth Alliance – Nova Dreadnought

Nova Alpha Dreadnought (In Service 2215)
While carrying a massive array of laser cannons, the early Nova design is light on anti-fighter weapons.  However, it carries a large fighter complement of its own.  Those still in service in later years were converted to the Beta version.
As with other ships of the era, the Nova originally carried the Tiger Starfury (Carrier 152, CR 384) switching to the Nova Starfury in 2230 (Carrier 176, CR 409) before getting the Aurora in 2244.

Earth Alliance – The Hyperion Cruiser

The Hyperion was the work horse of the Earth Alliance fleet since the early 23rd century.  While slower than most other cruisers, it was able to be upgraded time and time again to keep it current.


Hyperion Alpha Heavy Cruiser (In Service 2216)
A replacement for various older cruiser designs, the Hyperion turned out to be easy to upgrade giving it a long service life.  Despite being short-ranged, the medium plasma cannons were considered to be the main weapons.
Originally carrying the Tiger Starfury (Carrier 38, CR 191) they upgraded to the Nova in 2230 (Carrier 44, CR 198), and those still in service got the Aurora in 2244.

Hyperion Gamma Assault Cruiser (In Service 2230)
One of the more common Hyperion variants, the Gamma carries an expanded troop contingent and the craft required to deliver them to a planet or enemy space installation.  It was so successful that this model continued in service even after most other Hyperions had been retired.

Hecate Alpha Testbed Cruiser (In Service 2228)
When the Earth Alliance Senate voted against upgrading the Hyperion Alpha with new technology, the military instead created the Hecate to “test new technologies to avoid spending money on dead ends”.  Since the Hecate is actually a Hyperion, the military got its upgraded cruisers and once funding was approved they could easily be converted into active service Hyperions.
The Hecate originally carried a single flight of Tiger Starfuries (Carrier 38, CR 193), upgrading to the Nova in 2230 (Carrier 44, CR 201), and eventually to the Aurora in 2244.

Hecate Beta Bolt Cruiser (In Service 2232)
While the Earth Alliance couldn’t initially replicate the Dilgar pulsar technology, they could utilised capture bolters.  A single Hyperion/Hecate was built to test the technology.  It was considered successful, but the pulse weapons developed after the war were considered superior.
Due to the space required for testing equipment the fighter bay had to be removed.  The ship was destroyed during the Earth-Minbari War.

Olympus Delta Corvette (In Service 2241)
This is the modernized version of the Alpha with improved hull strength, better engines, newer missile racks, and the old plasma cannons replaced with pulse cannons for a more rounded ship.  Like the Nova dreadnought, the crew quarters are cramped making it an unpopular ship to serve on.  To allow the captain a better view of the battle the bridge is situated on a strut sticking out of the port side of the vessel, a feature common to all Olympus-class ships.

Earth Alliance – The Artemis Frigate

Artemis Alpha Armoured Frigate (In Service 2168)
Used mainly as an escort vessel, the Artemis was a surprise to raiders who normally only encountered lightly armed and armoured escorts.  While still in use during the Dilgar War, most of these vessels were used to protect supply ships rather than as front-line combatants.

Artemis Beta Heavy Frigate (In Service 2190)
Longer-ranged weaponry along with improved engines and a reinforced hull made the Beta version into a ship that could take on enemy capital ships.  Unfortunately the Artemis fell out of favour, like the Olympus, with the Senate due to the perceived need for additional support ships for ammunition resupply.  The last Artemis was destroyed during the Earth-Minbari War.

From the Dilgar War (2229-2232) through the Earth-Minbari War (2245-2248) to the Earth Alliance Civil War (2260-2261), the Earth Alliance ships have gradually evolved through the application of new technology, although they have generally retained the "brick with an engine at the back" appearance derided by other races.

The next few posts will list the various different Earth Alliance ships.  I have included those from the original post so you can see where they fit into the design trees.


Earth Alliance – The Tethys Police Cutter
Due to the large number of systems in the Earth Alliance it is necessary to have ships dedicated to police and customs duties, as well as being the first line of defence against raiders.


Laertes Gamma Police Corvette (In Service 2184)
Predecessor to the Tethys, the Laertes was replaced after the Dilgar War with the more modern design.  After leaving Earth Alliance service many were sold to friendly minor races, although a number were acquired by raider groups.

Quick question:
If you have a weapon with carronade it can't fire at targets at long range.  Stealth says you treat all attacks as if they are at one range band further.

Does this mean that carronade weapons can only fire at short range (as if it was medium) since fire at medium range would be treated as long range which they can't fire at?

Alternatively does it just mean that fire at medium range takes the -1 penalty as if it was long range?

According to section 4.3 of the rules, if you have a Shield rating of at least 1 then even after piercing is taken into account the firer still needs to roll more than 1 on each impact die.  Therefore a Shield rating of 1 is very useful (and cheap) if you opponent uses lots of Piercing +3 weapons.  Ignores Shields would still get through however.

With regards to the Pulse Lasers, if you are intending them to be used mainly as anti-fighter weapons you should be aware of a couple of things:
1) You don't use Impact or Damage against fighters so I would make them Impact 1 which will save space for something else.
2) Fighters move after ships and fire before them.  As a standard fighter flight can move 10 hexes in any direction they can zip in from outside your anti-fighter weapon range and shoot you before you can do anything about it.

Therefore I would propose the following choices:
1) If you want your ship to only defend itself against fighters then use Anti-Fighter Batteries and Point Defense.
2) If you want it to destroy fighters at range then I would suggest a high ROF, range 12 or more, Anti-Fighter Trait (and maybe Fighter Exclusive), and either Inverted Range modifiers or No Range Modifiers.  Increased Hits may also be of use.  Any fighter attacking your ship will then have to take at least one turn of fire before it can attack you.
3) Carry your own fighters to defend your ships.

A short range anti-fighter weapon is only useful if you are happy to fire after you have been shot and you are operating as a small squadron and want to be able to provide covering fire to whichever ship is currently under fighter attack (assuming you aren't all under attack).

While these are the human versions of these ships, they can be used to represent the ships of other races as well.

Civilian ships are generally slow with minimal armament in order to carry as much cargo as possible.  Most cargo vessels use a series of pods (essentially the space equivalent of shipping containers) so they can quickly detach their current cargo and pick up new pods rather than having to wait around to be unloaded.
None of these vessels have their own jump engine so they have to rely on fixed jump gates to get to their destination.

Small Base

The Shadows
The Shadows are the other ancient race left behind to help the younger races grow.  Where the Vorlons are “order”, the Shadows are “chaos” – they believe that the best way for the other races to grow is through conflict and strife so that only the strongest survive.

Their key puppets in the War Without End are the Centauri and the humans.


Fighters
Medium Fighter – faster than most fighters and has the same energy absorption system as the larger ships making it hard to kill.

Ships
Shadow vessels are grown rather than built, and it has been suggested that they keep on growing at a slow rate throughout their lives.  While they can operate independently, they are better when directed by a “pilot” – a captive of another race melded into the ship to make it fully self-aware.
While the ships have Shield ratings, they don't actually have shield generators.  Instead they have spines which they can use to absorb and store the energy of incoming attacks before bleeding it off over time.  They are best overcome with weapons that are able to keep hitting the ship again and again in a small space of time before it can bleed off the stored energy and absorb more.


Destroyer
While this is the smallest Shadow vessel it is a dangerous opponent for the cruisers of most races.

The Vorlon Empire

The Vorlons are one of the two ancient races left behind by the first ones to guide the younger races.  They are best thought of as “order”.  They do not allow the younger races to intrude on their territory – if any diplomacy is required it will take place on the other race's world.

The Vorlons are fighting what is known as the War Without End against the Shadows, mainly through their manipulation of the younger races – in particular the Minbari.  They are responsible for the emergence of telepaths among many races as a weapon to use in this war.


Fighters
Heavy Fighter – the term is someone odd given they don't have a light or medium fighter.  As with their larger ships the fighter is well shielded and difficult to damage.

Vorlon ships are some sort of bio-constructs that are more grown than built and are semi-sentient.  The lightning cannon on most ships is capable of firing as a lighter weapon with larger arcs but this really can't be represented in Starmada.  The top end lightning cannon is sufficiently powerful that a single shot will destroy almost any target.

Transport
Smallest of the Vorlon ships, the transport is used as a personal conveyance by important Vorlons such as their ambassadors.
