Is this still happening?  I've just discovered the post after searching for VBAM.  Also is Sovereign Stars still in the pipeline?

I've discovered VBAM after seeing it mentioned a few times on here.  At the risk of my brain exploding because I'm taking too much on at once, can someone give me a summary of what it's like and how it works with Starmada?

Their website isn't great for info and although they have a forum too, I thought it best to ask here as I'm primarily interested in it working with Starmada.

Thanks.

If you do B5, remember that the older races can make jumps with pinpoint accuracy. Maybe the Minbari get to jump to a specific hex without deviation, but the Earthers have to deal with scatter of some sort.

Yeah, I've already thought of adding Advanced Jump Engines for jumping out by simply changing the current hyperdrive option to roll 2d6 but without chance of reset.

Also I need to figure out how to use jump points.  It doesn't matter for jumping in as really you just declare where you want to come on.  But jumping out is more tricky to get right.  They need to be held open to let other ships through too.

hi!

maybe you can use this for "jumping in":

Cheers, I'll take a look at that.

We do use pre-plotted movement.  That's one of the reasons I picked Starmada and it's working out great.  The thing we wanted to test was whether it's better to pick lots of small ships or a few (or even 1) big ship.  It didn't seem to matter.  Both had their pros and cons.

The rules for hyperdrive are based on "jumping out" and so increase the defensive rating of the ship.  However how do people handle "jumping in"?

I'm trying to mod this for B5 but this would apply to Startrek and many other genres too.

My first thought would be to increase the offensive rating by the same amount?

I didn't get my notifications of these posts...weird.

Thanks, I'll try these too.

Diddimus,

How did your test of my B5 conversions go?

We didn't get chance to test it, we wanted to try one more basic test game first.  Hopefully will try on Sat.

We played a test game of something that was crap in ACTA due to "initiative sinks".  1 big ship vs lots of smaller ships.  Although it wasn't that extreme it worked really well.  Using the ships from the book I had the 400 point ship vs 4 x 50 point + 1 x 200.  I lost, but only just.  A few unlucky turns meant I didn't do enough damage to the larger ship when it mattered.  But all in all a great game and the system seems well balanced for any combination.

Also, while I'd like to claim the credit for Stirzaker's work, I can't. I'm not a very good conversion-maker, I stick with the original designs...

Oops, yes it's RobinStirzaker's version not murtalianconfederacy.

Welcome to the forums and to Starmada. For your information, there are several B5 conversions in the file section, based on B5 Wars, ActA among other things. Perhaphs you can look there for some ideas?

Thanks.  I've seen those, but all the zip files are corrupt.  It's me who replied to your thread, I'm waiting on you to repost the others  big_smile  wink

There's only murtalianconfederacy's version that's available as he posted direct to the forum.  I'm still unsure whether I want to go with the 0 sheilds version but I'm going to give it a go first.  I'll be playing my first test tonight so I'll let you know how it goes.

Also the stealth generator...

What is "The Stealth Generator"?

If you are looking for a game that is even quicker/easier to play you could look at Starmada Fleet Operations.

I have briefly looked at this but I think it uses turn based movement doesn't it?  I.e.  I go, you go type movement similar to ACTA.  Which is one of the options in SAE

Pre-plotted movement is one reason I like Starmada AE.  There's an issue with turn based what we used to call "initiative sinking".  It's where one side has more ships, so they keep some safe and move them first, meanwhile the side with the fewer ships has to move theirs into position where the nearby ships are still to move.  I'm not a fan as you can guess.

Also I'm happy with around 10 ships per side, I like some detail to the rules too so Starmada is my first choice.  If we want to scale the games up I'll certainly look at SFO.

I'll check out Vassal too, I have heard of it, just never used it.

Hi,

I'm new to Starmada and although I've posted a couple of times so far I thought I'd post an intro and some questions...

I used to play Babylon 5 A Call to Arms by Mongoose and I was a regular poster on their forum.  Although it started off a great game, as we got used to it we started to see the cracks.  In the end, unless controlled, it wasn't a balanced game and took far to long to play larger games. It was also almost impossible to make changes without messing something else up.  So I tasked myself with finding a replacement for my group and it looks like Starmada is the one we are going to use.

The first question is:  The ACTA forum was always littered with players who don't like X or want to change Y.  Although this forum isn't overly busy, there doesn't seem to be much of this here.  Is this because the moderators delete all non-believers  wink  or is the system as good as it first appears?  Is there anything players don't use because it doesn't work for them?

Are there any other active groups/forums for Starmada?  I'm obviously looking at conversions for B5 and trying to get as much info as possible.

Does anyone play a B5 campaign game?  If so what rules do you use.  I'm hoping to design something that isn't just the normal campaign game where you conquer the galaxy, but something that feels like how B5 played out in the series.

That's all for now.  Thanks for any help given.

Ooh so many options!

Making the beam fire-linked will make it fire as one weapon, but will that also stop it from splitting to two different targets?  Or can you split between two targets and only use the fire-linked rule if both fire at the same target?

Hope that makes sense  :?

Yeah, I realise you've converted from B5W and I prefer that.  It's what I want to do too as I see those ships as more official.  I don't like ACTA anymore so I'm not using that as a basis.  I've got all the B5W ship sheets, but it'll be easier if I can take someone elses conversions as a base, rather than do the all the work wink

I'm thinking of converting all beams to mulitple weapons (probably x2), so they can split fire if they choose.  I want to try and give them the "beamy" feel in Starmada as much as possible.

There are other conversion on this forum but all the zips are corrupt, so yours is the one I'm looking at first.  I'm not sure I want to go for the 0 shields idea yet, but I'm going to give it a go.  I presume this works for you, but how have you found it when fighting againt the ships with shields like the Shadows, when a lot of weapons only have 1 IMP?

Ah I've now seen that extra hull dmg will give it between 4 and 8 hull damage, that makes it powerful.

However what about the fact it's just one weapon?  A lucky shot renders this powerful ship useless.  I'm thinking of changing it to be mulitple weapons in the same arcs, to represent being able to fire at mulitple targets and build in some protection against losing the weapon early.  Any thoughts?

I'm new to Starmada and have come to the game from playing Babylon 5: A Call to Arms from Mongoose and looking for an alternative system.  I've got some questions about your ships, it might be that I don't understand the rules enough yet.

I'm a Shadows player and at first glance the ships look good.  However now I've read the rules it doesn't seem as though the beam is that powerful.  I'm referring to the 1/3+/1/4 version.  It'll do a maxium of 4 damage to a ship and if the other ship has shields it'll be very poor due to the 1 IMP dmg.

Secondly the main ships have only one weapon (as seen in the show) but it seems as though the ship can be disabled quite easily due to this fact.  Have I missed something?

Regards,

Paul.

This is the second post where I've downloaded zips from this forum and they are invalid.  Any one else have this problem?
