A while ago (no idea how long) I designed a few Martian vessels for Iron Stars. Back in 2016, when I finally obtained Dreadnoughts and Iron Stars, my interest was re-kindled enough to try and launch an alternate IS setting. But, as with quite a few things around that time, it died. I initially was planning on transferring the core concept to SAE, but that died too.

Then, about a month ago, I decided to re-start work on it. I had three factions--the Martians, a Balkan Confederation and a Russian Union of Revolutionary Committees, but I needed others. Finally, going through multiple updates (first to the alien powers, then the non-central human players, then the Big Five/Six, then the rest of the solar system's powers), here it is: the complete alternate alternate-history Iron Stars setting. Over 600 vessels designed for about thirty factions in total. Yep, I don't dream small...

Just a note: two factions were late additions. The Selenite Clans and the Mercurian Dictatorships were not designed until around three days before today. Initially Mercury was uninhabited and the Selenites would have been in a similar way to how they would have been treated if the narrator of 'First Men in the Moon' had been successful. But I decided instead to make them a power in their own right. I had intended to make them low-tech but instead...well, they ain't going to be a pushover. Neither are the Mercurians. Despite their presence in the document itself, please feel free to disregard them if they're too munchy.

Another note: during the design process, I didn't know when Saudi Arabia became Saudi Arabia. I thought it was later than it was, so initially christened that state the Arabian Union. Afterwards I found out they were around before the Calamity, so changed the faction name to Saudi Arabia, but missed the change for the Yanbu' al Bahr class gunboat. My apologies

Because of the max size limit, I've had to create five individual documents (the original was 6MB)

A few years ago I provided a document for SNE for warp points, including warp point assaults. After I went back to SAE designing, I thought the SNE rules would be okay. Then, about a month ago, I decided that, actually, it wouldn't. I spent quite a few hours number-crunching, and a few more pondering possible additions, and after some hard work, here it is--the SAE Warp Point document.

Here's another quasi-Blast from the Past SAE supplement--originally it was going to be a SNE supplement, but after a bit of work it worked just as well as a SAE supplement. It also contains some artwork, primarily some very rough sketches detailing the primary concept, just so you can understand why I don't do artwork...:D

Here's a couple of SAE supplements fresh from yours truly. The second supplement, officially called 'The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum', is from the chorus of a piece of music called 'The Lunatics' by Fun Boy Three. Yep, you can't say I don't have my finger on the pulse of current popular music... big_smile

The relevant files are in the SX section. Again, if anyone has a problem with what I've done, please let me know and I'll take them down ASAP

Around fifteen years ago I was in conversation with another Starmada player who went by the username jerryxxv on (I think) the Yahoo! group and possibly on here too. During that time he sent me various files on Starmada Compendium and Starmada X settings he was working on--for instance, the main one I remember was a human-centric setting called Balance of Power (which he did originally in Compendium before re-working it into SX). Of course, around that time he fell out of contact (mainly because, IIRC, his ability to communicate with the wider world was curtailed by external forces).

Would anyone object if I post those files up myself in the Starmada X sub-forum? If anyone does object (especially the creator of the works), I won't, but if no-one objects then I'll find 'em, burn 'em to a disc and post them up. Just to be clear, this is his own works, nothing to do with me (except for a few bouncing-ideas-back-and-forth very late in the day, which might have reduced the quality because of my two-pennyworth...)

I'm asking on here because it's a difficult decision to make on my own. On the one hand, I think his settings (still a work in progress, admittedly) were interesting and they gave me some inspirations. On the other, I don't want to just post them up and be told I'm doing something wrong. I admit that by posing the question I could be doing something wrong, but WTH...

In the process of looking through my files, I found a few things--including the background of another SAE setting and what originally was just a set of doodles but has now formed another SAE supplement. So, that's two SAE supplements coming soon (hopefully, depending on whether the little changes I've got planned to one of them work...)

Note: I placed the supplements in-line because, with having to drag-and-drop, they were in reverse alphabetical order, so I placed them inline to restore the alphabetical order.

If there are any problems, please let me know.

Cracked Reflections had an error. This has now been rectified and represented by the re-naming to volume 1.02

After some anticipation, here are all the supplements I released without Drake notation, with Drake notation (including some that have never before been released)

I'd finished yesterday, tried to burn it to a disc (along with some other files) but found what I'd wanted to burn was too large, tried it with another disc only to find out just now it was a wasted effort--the files were on there, but something happened and now they're not. I'm going to have to burn the disc again tonight (for release tomorrow).

Gaaahhh...

What I can tell you, though, is that there are fifteen (yes, fifteen!) supplements that are going to be re-released and three new supplements--From The Darkness, Light, If You Don't Ask... and Let Sleeping Wizards Lie.

I've already informed cricket of this, but hopefully in a few days time all the Starmada: Admiralty Edition supplements I previously released, which were not in Drake notation, will soon be re-published--as well as a couple of supplements that never saw the light of day and some units for supplements that were designed but never released.

At the moment, that totals a massive number of some 15 supplements, ranging from 'The Warring Triumvirate' through to 'Cracked Reflections'. All of them released in what I like to think of as the 'murtalianconfederacy standard supplement layout'. I'm taking today off because, as it turns out, holing up in one place for hours at a time laboriously inputting weapon and fighter information into OldnGrey's Shipyard, then the ships, and then copy-pasting the ships into their respective slots in the supplement, takes it out of you. Who knew? (well, me, now, obviously...)

Think of it as my Greatest Hits, or a true Blast From The Past.

Coming soon, to a dark corner of the forum near you...(otherwise known as the Admiralty Bourbaki Basin)

Okay, a few problems.

Once I got home I did everything as you said, but kept getting odd things happening. First, the BSUR was always some multiple of what it should be, and second, the drop-down lists weren't working. I tinkered for a while and think I've got the answer

Step 4:
a) the formula should be inserted into cell BA2 instead of cell BB2
b) the formula should read (R2:V2,AB2,AO2),1),0) instead of (R2:V2,AB2,AP2),1),0)

(The column AP was, I think, for the ordering of the weapon traits, as it kept changing between a value of 1 and 5)

Step 5:
a) the formula should be entered into cell BB2, not cell BC2.
b) the formula should read (BA2*C2...), not (BB2*C2...)

(this is as a result of inputting the main weapon formula into cell BA2. The reason for this is that column BC is for the drop-down lists in the ship spreadsheets--I think)

Step 6:

the formula entered into cell L2 should read =BA2+BB2 (this is as a result of the previous 2 steps)

I haven't done that much with Excel before, and certainly not on the scale of this, so YMMV. However, it calculates the example seeker weapon correctly, it calculates normal weapons correctly, AND it allows all weapons to be selected from the drop-down lists in Ship sheets 1 through 5. I must further state that I'm working from a version of Drydock v1.03 that I updated with the minor changes to v1.04, so it might be that v1.04 was different...

(10 replies, posted in Starmada)

Okay, thanks for that. Hopefully I'll be able to do it and then I'll be able to do foundation work for my settings still.

Also, the reason I felt my settings were OOD is, even though my settings, for the most part, are self-contained (ideally I've covered most of, if not all, potential requirements in TNBL--six hundred-plus ships across all three supplements should be enough) I would like it if people took a force of my ships into a crossover battle and didn't feel they're under-costed or over-costed and, with the changes, not only does it mean any new units would have to be officially obsolete WRT the official weapon traits, it means they're potentially broken--either they're going to be too weak or too powerful.

(10 replies, posted in Starmada)

Oh, okay, that's interesting.

Can you tell me what I'd have to do to alter my version of drydock (which I've updated to v1.04 from 1.03) to take into consideration the new seeking weapon formula? PM would be fine if you don't want to post it up here. I can do the minor changes fine, but the bigger change is going to be a pain...

Also, I've noticed that Scatter, Telescopic and almost all the two range-based traits have changed. That's gonna be fun to input into my older version...plus my TNBL setting is already OOD...:(

To add my penny's worth--I have no knowledge beyond the info found in the SAE Romulan Armada about the non-screen (i.e., TV/film) Star Trek universe, so all I can do is a 'ooh, that looks interesting. And even my screen-Trek knowledge is incomplete, as I've never seen many episodes of TOS and my main knowledge was TNG onwards. Basically, when I've got little or no knowledge, I can't offer any constructive criticism because, to me, it's about as familiar as, say, MRCAcct's SNE Silicoids and Terrans or KDLadage's SDG setting (in fact, I know more about that because I was involved in knocking up some SX ships for some of the powers (when, I'm sad to say, I was still in my power-gaming stage. Now I try to design interesting ships...))
