Hello everyone,
New member here.
Recently a friend of mine recommended having a look at Starmada. I went and bought the rules and to my surprise I found myself totally captured by the systems flexibility and robustness.
At my club we had painted many Aeronef fleets ( Aeronef from Brigade models ), but then we stopped playing because we didn't feel the Aeronef rules made justice to the minis and we couldn't find an alternative rule set that would work.
Upon going through starmada I realized that it was the perfect system. Even the AE edition movment was right for it as flying ships probably have to deal with inertia much more than naval ships. So I got to work to design the technologies and design concepts to replicate the Aeronef ships. The result was great. These minis have lots of guns with very particular arcs so the 12 possible arc that Starmada provides were really great for the game. Well, there is a lot more to comment on how we use the different starmada rules to represent the Aeronef universe but I don't want to bore you with the details.
So here is a battle report of our firts game.
This first battle was the Hit and Run senario from SAE.
The year is sometime around 1913. The location is somewhere close to the Malvinas islands ( Falklands, sorry I am an argie after all ). A British task force is resupplying in one of the Archipelago's minor islands when detected by Argentine floatplanes.
Admiral David Macelo informed of the sighting attempts a hit and run on the Brits.

Battlecruiser HMS Audacious
Light Cruiser HMS Exeter
Destroyer HMS Arethusa

<IMG src="http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/wargameserize/Aeronef/troops023.jpg"></IMG>
The eager Captain of the HMS Exeter jumps to engage the enemy followed by the HMS Arethusa

<IMG src="http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/wargameserize/Aeronef/troops024.jpg"></IMG>
This does not go very well and they are force to disengage under heavy fire
<IMG src="http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/wargameserize/Aeronef/troops026.jpg"></IMG>
The British main battleline pushes forward

<IMG src="http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/wargameserize/Aeronef/troops028.jpg"></IMG>
Both fleets are now engaged in medium range combat
<IMG src="http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/wargameserize/Aeronef/troops029.jpg"></IMG>
However the Argentine cruiser captains make a critical mistake and push forward too fast allowing the British batteline to concentrate fire on Alte Brown.

<IMG src="http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll269/wargameserize/Aeronef/troops031.jpg"></IMG>
The Argentine squadron tries to correct the mistake but when the light cruiser ARA Bouchard is shot down the finally give up and disengage from the action.

The game was a lot of fun. I was running the game as a referee to keep it going at a good pace given that everyone is new to the rules. My Argentine ships were run by David and the british by their owner Lance.
It was a lot of fun and everyone agreed that we now have the right rules to get the big Aeronef fleets that we've painted on the table again.
Some details.
Aeronefs use the SAE movent rules with one exception, speed limit equal to enginesx3, this is to reflect that there is a max speed due to air resistance. However most battles happen a slow speeds since I've designed the ships to have poor engine ratings.
We plot orders a turn in advance, i.e. in turn 4 you plot the orders for turn 5 and you execute the orders you had plotted earlier. This attempts to reflect the slower reaction times of these early XX century vessels.
Some fleets use Dirigibles, those use the naval movement rules. Digs do treat wind resistance as a viscose fluid.
All in all, great game...
I can now say that I am a starmada fan and my Klingon armada is already on preorder at my local game store.
Congrats to the MJ12 team for this spectacular game.
best regards,
