I thought I would share some images from the scratch built fleets I made for me and some close friends to play Starmada with.
I built the following fleets from cardboard and PVA glue. The bases are made from golf tees and metal washers.
All the materials for all three fleets cost less than $50 US.

For being just cardboard cutouts, those look pretty good.
..and you've made a buttload. 
In the first picture, second post, what is that larger 'organic' ship? I know those are Night Brood from Silent Death, I just don't recognize that larger one.

I added onto one of those ships with a bunch of carboard, and painted it to match to make a flagship for that fleet. That's all. It came out great.
Those are pretty cool! The red fleet reminds me a *lot* of Masters of Orion. The only thing that makes that comparison wrong is that you don't have 900 of the smallest, non-fighter size ships. ::grins::
