Please PM me your favored email address and I will distribute information to each player. I will be available for any questions!

We will begin Vassal training by having each player submit in-game their fleet composition and starting hexes. I will send everyone some starting information and guidelines for beginning play.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

No one asked but the prize will be a hard copy of the Starmada Rules Annex. (If you already have it or are getting it before the tournament concludes, we'll make it something else of comparable value.)

PM sent

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Waiting on one email... I suggest you all start choosing your two forces, though. It will speed the destruction up.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Fleets already chosen, and I had a bit of a play around with Vassal the other evening to try to get a feel for it.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

My fleets are all ready to go, and since Madseason and I seem to be wrapping up our current game (soon) I'm itchin' to start the tourney. I'll probably get my a** handed to me, but it's still better to play than not  lol
Cheers,
Erik
PS a warning to new Vassal users, the dice roller seems to have an unholy affinity for 1's...except for when you want them. It is an evil, evil thing

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

I didn't get to finish the email I wanted to write today. I will get it out tomorrow for everyone.

What everyone can do ahead of time, as I mentioned, is determine the composition of their two fleets and determine starting locations for them. Erik (aka Blacklancer99) is a veteran Vassal user, so his opponents can lean on him a bit to show them the ropes.

Does anyone have any questions they want me to address?

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

What are the allowable fleet set up positions?
i.e. does the Hegemony fleet start at the bottom of the map and the Empire at the top?

Veteran eh? I guess 2 games grants me veteran status...after the tourney I suppose I will be a Grizzled Veteran!  wink
Truth is the Vassal interface simplifies things so much that I find that I have to slow down so that I don't miss steps (like last turns screens allocation for half my squadron!). I did miss getting to roll a sack of dice when I popped those CRM Batteries  :geek:
During  the game I keep a printout of the turn sequence stuff from the rulebook on the desk in front of me and I scribble all my orders on a memo pad before typing them in, that way I can cross each item off as I go and it's easier to keep track of everything.
Now I'm off to do what will probably be the final turn of our ongoing game  sad
Cheers,
Erik

For setup locations, Empire will begin at the top of the map. Standard SAE rules dictate the top 3.5 hex rows are allowable starting positions. For the medium vassal map, this means the row xx04 and above (0104, 0204, 0304, etc.). [Hegemony will be at the bottom of the map in row xx30 and below.]

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

I'm an eeeeeediot. I did both my fleets as 500 points so I need to redo both my setups.  I apologize to both the guys I'm (supposed to be) playing.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Somehow, when I copied the ship designs for the tournament I cut off the "rules" that Madseason posted at the top of the post. I was operating with the first post of the topic in mind for some reason. I apologize to both of my opponents again for the mix up and the delay it has caused. I couldn't log any computer time last night so it will be tonight at the earliest before I can correct my setups and resend them.
Sorry again for holding things up.
Erik

People in MA just can't get their acts together...

Oh...

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

I have a quick question:

Are we playing with the maximum roll rules?  You know, the rule that gives you a chance to hit if your modified to hit is greater than 6.  Let me know so I can finish my turn.

Yes, those rules are in effect. And trust me, I've been sunk by a few such rolls.  sad

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Hey my Vassal is sending  a .dat file rather than a .vlog file does anyone know how to fix this?

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Could you send me the file? If I remember correctly, it works either way.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Yea they work, you just have to open the .dat file with vassal.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Oh, now I'm not sure what your question is. Is it simply why does it not automatically make it vlog?

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Yes, it was saving it as a Vlog now it does not.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

I think that may be something to do with installing a new version. I've had several versions of Vassal, and some de-associate the extensions etc when you install a new client. You could try removing vassal totally and then reinstalling? Just remember to keep the module and your saves/logs safe.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

Yes, true, in an older version of Vassal mine always saved them without extension (!!!) but when I installed a more recent version some months ago it started making them vlogs again.

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

There was a question about how to manage Firing orders. As I describe in the how to play manual I wrote up, the fastest method for PBEM is to have both players secretly record their firing orders, just like move orders are handled. This DOES mean that, unlike the rules as written, you could end up wasting shots if you have all your ships concentrate fire on one ship and the first firing ship causes enough damage to destroy it...

Any questions about this? Is this how everyone is playing it?

Re: PBEM Tournament - Round 1

How do you get rid off the white movement lines that follow your ships around?

Click the small black button labeled "mov" at the far right of the vassal controls and all of the white lines should disappear.
