Topic: Ion Cannon

I've only played a few games of Starmada so far, but I've come up with this battery design that I'd like to run by you guys and see what you think. The idea is a Star Wars type ion cannon for disabling shields and systems but not causing any hull damage:
standard sized gun:
"Ion Cannon" 3/6/9 , 1/4+/1/3, No Hull Damage, Continuing Damage, Ignores Shields

Large sized gun:
"Large Ion Cannon" 4/8/12 , 1/4+/1/5, No Hull Damage, Continuing Damage, Ignores Shields

I've only tried these a few times, but they're absolutely brutal and don't take up much space at all (31 ad 63 SUs respectively) considering the carnage when you hit with them.

I can almost guarantee that I would roll all odd numbers for damage with this weapon   wink
The Continuing DMG and Ignores Shields are a nasty combo. MadSeason created a similar weapon (at least in concept) for his Hegemony faction in the PBEM tournament and it seemed to dominate. It couldn't kill ships , but it would leave them drifting weaponless hulks. I suspect this weapon would do the same. Just what those arrogant Imperial Star Destroyer Captains deserve  smile Considering screen evidence of the Ion Cannon firing a rapid succession of shots, maybe a slightly larger version with an increased ROF?
Cheers,
Erik

Re: Ion Cannon

Battery V: Ferroelectric Crystal, 6/12/18, 1/2+/1/4, Continuing Damage; Catastrophic; Ignores Shields
Ignore Shields and Continuing Damage is fun isn't it  smile

I have an Ion Cannon type weapon on a few of my ships known as Assassins, knock everything down then Marine the living hell out of it.

Re: Ion Cannon

Or you could call it the Ionic Disruptor, like I did when I first brought up the Catastrophic+Cont. Damage issue...:)

Changed the weapon design for that race now. Instead of having Catastrophic it now has a 1/1/5, Ignores Shields, Continuing Damage. Still very nasty, but its going to gut ships but leave them floating in space rather than just atomising it completely...

Re: Ion Cannon

I once got 14 hits off a ROF2 Continuing Damage roll.  I RULE at flipping coins.
