Topic: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Hi guys,

i'm Antoine, 26 years old, IT, living in France  lol

I'm fond of space combat games, i started with Full Thrust, but I can't find opponents, so I search for a game playable with VASSAL.

So i start to create my own game, Task Force Sol, but i quickly give up.

Next, I buy Attack Vector, a greeaaaaat game, I love it, much, really love it. There is a VASSAL module but no player interested in, and the forum is almost dead.

So I go to starfleet battles, here there are many players, but the online engine is direct play only (no pbem so with american I have many hours of difference), and it is not free ! More important, there is not newtonian vector based movement. Buy it for nothing ...

And, eventually, browsing the Starship Combat Network Forum, I find a thread about Starmada, and follow the link .....

There is :
Demo rules  smile
VASSAL module  big_smile
Living community  yikes
Cheap game with Vectorial movement  8-)

I want it !!!

So i'm here, sorry for bad english

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

So, I'm searching someone to play with me on the demo rules, with VASSAL of course, in order to give it a try.

I will buy the PDF of rules and rules annex.

Thanks !

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

forgot about demo, i'm ready to try the full rules, even with options.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

As the developer for the Vassal version, I am always ready to encourage people to try it.  smile

Let's try a small scenario with some published ships from the Core Rules. What do you say?

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

hi madseason, I'm ok for a game by email, ones ship each seems good to start isn't it ?

I check tomorrow the ISS book.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Yeah, the ISS book works, too, if you have it. If all you have is the core rules, though, we can use those.

One ship is fine. We can pick a couple with similar point values and claw at each other.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Welcome to Starmada and the Starmada forum.  I have been playing for c4 years and enjoy the game a great deal.  Before I discovered Starmada, my friends & I used to play Full Thrust.  Since I discovered Starmada, I haven't played Full Thrust any more.
Again, Welcome  big_smile

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

ok so I take a Terran Belligerent light cruiser (209pts), it seems balanced to start.

I'm ok to use full rules, even optional ones (3D movement, sensors ...), I'm an harpoon player, this don't afraid me  big_smile

I'm in Time Zone +1 (it is 08:17 right now here), do you want to play in live or pbem ?

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

PBEM is all that really works for me. I will pick a ship and set up the Vassal file and send it to you later today.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Looks like the Kyouwa-class Arcturan cruiser, although it comes in with more points than the Belligerent (226 vs. 209), so if I win, you always have an excuse.  big_smile

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

it works, i send you a PM with my mail

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Here is the Arcturan setup. It's in a zip file, so you need to unzip it before opening it in Vassal.

I followed a naming convention to keep our turns straight. Game1 001 Arcturan Setup is mine. So your return file would be Game1 002 Terran Setup. This will help keep files straight. I will PM you my email address to make file exchange easier.

Let me know if you have any questions!

For those watching, I think I will continue to post my files here so you can follow along and maybe get hooked on Vassal play.  wink

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Actually, I just emailed you directly, so now you have my email.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Good luck guys, and welcome, Brazouck -- I just discovered Starmada recently myself and am enjoying it tremendously.

Give Madseason the what-for!

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Thanks all for the welcome, and if someone else want to play, i'm ready to run several game alongside, if you forgive my bad french-english  wink

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

For those who wish to follow the match... my first turn of movement is attached. Again, it's a zip file, so it needs to be extracted first.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

And i'm writing an AAR in the same time, in frenglish  8-)

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Looking forward to the Frenglish account!  lol

The Terran gunners spent the turn finding the range. The Arcturan gunners must have said a prayer -- and it was answered!

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Turn 3 maneuvering and this time I open fire first.... and miss.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Some light damage on this bad arcturans

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Lost a main battery... Moved my ship a bit closer to the enemy. Realized, a little late, that his short range guns are much better than my short range guns.

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

Héhéhé, come in closer guy !

Re: New player in space - Looking for a VASSAL play

We came in closer... but not close enough for those pesky little shooters... The Terrans missed. The Arcturans landed a crippling blow! Well, except there was very little hull damage and no weapon damage.  :x

Is anyone enjoying watching this on Vassal? Shall I continue posting my turn files?

I am watching, pity it is one sided though. Like a tv series missing every other episode.

Hmmm.... oh, yeah. Well, on Monday (when I have access to all my files), I can post both sides' files.
