Topic: Alternative Armadas

Having become, for the present, tired of Firestorm Armada, I have decided to treat the FASA Ship Recognition Manuals as source material for conversion ( I may also try some things from this websitehttp://home.comcast.net/~ststcsolda/. I always liked the miniatures and will be glad to dust off those that I have to use in Starmada. It will require only small changes from standard Starmada rules.

    First, Co-Axial Banks will have to be used to properly represent some weapons. Second, the intermediate Ranges 21 (ORAT*1.125) and 27 (ORAT*1.375) will be needed. Third, the proposed extension to Shield Values (Expanded Shield Ratings-Proposed Rule-Cricket-7 September 2009) will have to be in effect for some of the larger and more advanced ships. I found that to fit the Constitution & Enterprise classes into reasonably sized hulls, I had to use Tech Level +4 (SU * 0.5). The conversions needed a Shuttlecraft to serve as a Breacher (Standard Shuttlecraft: Size 1-Speed 6-Attack 5+-Defense 2 (8 Capacity)). I also decided to make the shields Faceted to suit the method that I was using to convert Ablative Shields into Probability Shields. It could be argued that I should have turned them into Screens and that this would be more consistant with the source material, but I liked Facets better. There is nothing to stop you from converting these to Screens except the small effort and calculation involved in making the conversion. I kept the Cargo & Passenger capacity because these looked to be useful for Strategic Campaigns.I am adding five percent to the SU of the engines to account for the Warp Drive and I am multiplying the DRAT by 1.2 as though it were a Hyperdrive.

      The following two ships would be said by some to resemble the ship in a television series and to resemble the ship in a movie.

                                                                                                                                                    I based the RPL-2 on the damage statistics (trying to get a similar range of Damage values, based on Range & Dice Rolls), rather than trying a literal translation. I think that the ship came out disappointingly weak, but it is as close a conversion as I can make.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    It is on a par with some of the Renegade Legion: Leviathan Battleships that I have tried to convert. The problem with ships this large is that they need to be played against ships just as big, if one wants to conclude a game in any reasonable length of time.The notion of matching a ship this large against an entire fleet of other ships sounds fun in theory, but takes too long in practice.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                      This is the closest (and smallest) match that I could come to the original statistics. I only made slight adjustments to provide missing data.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        I am tempted to stretch the Tech Level Option past its intended function and re-do this conversion at TL +8 (SU* .25). This would give it a more reasonable (and playable) size and leave some room for its intended number of engines. It has always been a peculiar feature of this particular game background that the bigger a ship is, the faster it travels.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                          I posted Lots of Star Trek Ships in the Files section under the title Trekmada. alot of my TOS ships came from Fasa Star Trek and a B5 wars conversion called Trek Wars. I kept the hull sizes down as I was trying to cover all ERAs. I got the Romulan Torps wrong using double dmg instead of Range based (which I originally intended). Have a look and covert the TOS ships to your style. I have more ships (Loknar ect)and a lot of Enterprise Era done which will get posted eventually. I spotted my Excelsior error the side phasers are wrong should be impact1 dmg 1 PV drops to 279. Hope you find useful stuff in there.

These ships of yours would be very useful in a strategic campaign where such things as Cargo, Medical Bays, Passengers, and Science Bays could play an important role in scenarios.

In analogy to the way that VBAM/ Starmada treats the trait: Landing Capability, I am considering ships with more Engines than Hull to have Landing Capability as long as they also have Streamlining (10 % of Hull SU*TL Modifier, no effect on either DRAT or ORAT). For ships that have Engines equal to or less than Hull, they have Landing Capability if they have Landing Equipment (SU equal to that of the extra Engines which would be needed to give the ship more Engines than Hull) and are Streamlined, or if they have Anti-Gravity Landing (25 % of Hull SU*TL Modifer, no effect on either DRAT or ORAT)and are Streamlined.

While I agree that someone designing from scratch would be better off taking more Engines, I did not have this option and I made the House rule to change as little as possible. In most cases (except for those ships that are only one or two Engines short of having enough for Landing Capability), the Anti-Gravity Landing option is the more economical.

As this feature has no tactical consequences in Starmada, it makes no practical difference to game balance.

I have often thought that they must have been intending to make a Strategic game if the Tactical one sold well enough. The listing for passengers would have been quite useful in scenarios where a Colony is to be established, or in a scenario where a colony is to be evacuated (probably under enemy fire). The Cargo listing could have determined the Strategic Range (400 Cargo/16 Hull = 25 Strategic Turns),Full System Repairs (at 10 Cargo per system repaired per Strategic Turn), and Cargo delivered for scenario purposes. It might have been interesting.
