The Ipsha Baronies

The Ipsha are invertebrates that roughly resemble a starfish with anything from five to sixteen limbs – those with more limbs being of higher caste than those with less..  Due to their fast rate of reproduction the Ipsha have suffered a number of devastating civil wars over resources with their civilisation being almost destroyed each time.  Only their rapid population growth has allowed them to keep bouncing back.  Over time only five factions, or baronies, managed to survive to expand into space.

Rather than the whole race, originally only a single barony joined the League.  This was just before the Dilgar War and even as the Dilgar advanced on the Ipsha holdings they started another civil war.  They only survived the Dilgar onslaught due to the massive size of their fleets.  Only after the war did the rest of the baronies join the League.


Fighters

Urchin Heavy Fighter (In Service 2215)
While each barony has a slightly different fighter design, they are all basically the same with slightly heavies weaponry than found on most small craft.

Ships

The Ipsha home world is surrounded by intense electromagnetic fields that make space travel difficult, and they are also close to a number of black holes.  Over time they have harnessed the power of these fields to create advanced weaponry and they use micro-singularities to power their ships.

Probably due to their radial symmetry, the Ipsha are attracted to geometric ship designs.


Battlehex (In Service 2200)
Hexagonal in appearance from the front, these light cruisers are vulnerable to enemy fighters due to the lack of a spark field.

The archetypal Ipsha ship, the battleglobe has twenty spines each with a surge cannon at the end.  These combine their fire into powerful blasts.  While quite fast the ships is vulnerable to attack from the sides.

The Kor-Lyan Kingdoms

The Kor-Lyans are actually two very different races in symbiosis.

The Lyans are huge creatures rather like an ape/bear cross.  While they stand up when resting they run on all fours.  They are excellent climbers and swimmers and possess great strength, but are basically slow-witted and rather stupid creatures.

On the other hand the Kor are amphibious eel-like invertebrates.  As they continue to grow throughout their lives they can reach 10 meters in length, or even longer.  They have a spine-like organ which stretches the lengths of their bodies and doubles as brain tissue.  Therefore as the Kor grows this brain develops a surprising level of intelligence far out of proportion to its body.

The Kor were originally parasites, attaching themselves to the necks of other creatures and living off their fluids.  As an individual Kor grew, however, it became more and more difficult to support itself from a single host.  Thus, they adapted the ability to actually exert control over the creature, using their superior intelligence to guide the host to greater food sources, thus ensuring their own survival.  The Lyans proved the perfect host for this purpose.  Large, strong, and stupid, they also possessed rudimentary hands that enabled them to build and use tools.

Today, the Kor are so dependent on the Lyans for support they can barely survive without them.  They treat a host as they would a cherished pet, but upon the Lyan's death, they can transfer to another with only a brief "breaking in" period.  While it is theoretically possible for a Kor to attach itself to and take control of an intelligent being, and indeed this may well have been tried, it is unknown what the results of such a union would be.

The Kor-Lyans are feudal, with over three hundred different kingdoms on their home world alone.  Every piece of a king's available lands is parceled out to any of dozens of dukedoms, and from there on down to baronies.  Alliances between kings are just as common as the many wars that constantly embroil their people.  These wars seldom result in the deaths of Kor as they are fought between armies of Lyans, and generally result only in the transfer of territory.

Because entire wars can break out over points of honor, the Kor-Lyans are seen by alien races as extremely aggressive and dangerous, and diplomatic relations with them are fraught with tension.  While they may often be at war with each other the various kingdoms act with a single purpose when dealing with outsiders.

Kalti Intercept Fighters (In Service 2218)
While the Kalti only carries a pair of very light particle guns it also carries a small supply of missiles to bring it up to par with most other races fighters.

Ailyan Braching Pod
Slightly better armoured than most, the Ailyan delivers Lyan shock troops into enemy ships and bases.  Unfortunately the Lyans are sufficiently dumb that if they do capture a ship they can't do anything with it.

Due to the extensive mineral reserves of their home world, the Kor-Lyan make much greater used of missile launchers and other ballistic weapons than other races.

Llort Scavengers

The Llort are a subterranean race with an unstable feudal government.  They strongest among them hold power for as long as they can before a stronger individual or group comes along.  This “might makes right” attitude has led to them becoming raiders, taking what they can from other races.

The Llort lost all their outposts to the Dilgar but recaptured them later after a failed invasion of their home world.

With the lack of a stable government comes the lack of an organised military.  Ships and their crews are routinely traded between organisations in their bids for power.

The Torata Regency

The Torata are an aquatic race from a world once cover with water.  Several million years ago a large asteroid hit the planet and most of the water became locked into polar icecaps.  One of the few creatures to survive the cataclysm were the fish-like ancestors of the Torata.

As the evolved the different bands of Torata fought each other for the scare resources.  Over time they developed new weapons with which to wage these wars, and new undersea cities to grow the food needed to support their increasing population.  The Torata eventually made the leap into space and have founded a few colonies in their quest for resources.

A good multi-role fighter, the Tuka is able to reconfigure its weapon system to provide rapid fire against enemy fighters or a powerful single burst against enemy capital ships.

The Yolu Theocracy

The Yolu have been in space 2000 years longer than the Minbari.  However, they mostly stayed out of the previous Shadow War and have continued to pursue isolationist policies since then.  The early Minbari molecular weaponry is based on Yolu designs.

Mutai, the martial art practiced by many within the League of Non-Aligned Worlds, originated with the Yolu.  The brutality of Mutai convinced most to leave the Yolu alone, but they have fought off attacks by their neighbours and raiders.  After the Dilgar War some of their neighbours believed that the Yolu, who had retreated to their home world in the face of the Dilgar, were old and weak attacked their former territory.  At first the Yolu attempted diplomacy but when this failed they used force to retake their territory.  Their neighbours are now in no doubt about where the borders are with encroaching ships often being destroyed without warning.

Recently the Yolu have sent ambassadors to other races to ensure that they are left alone.

While slow the Utan is well armoured and carries a wide range of weaponry to engage both enemy fighters and capital ships.

The Usuuth Coalition

The Usuuth are a minor race on the border between Centauri and Orieni space.  They were overrun by the Orieni at the start of the war when the Centauri refused to honour their mutual defence agreement.

A basic fighter, the Rowlon were easily brushed aside by the Orieni Templar fighters to make way for their Hunter-Killer strikes.

Based on the Serron, the Sarlon was developed to test the particle hammer before it was deployed on the new Orthuss cruisers.  These vessels were deployed mixed in with Serron squadrons to provide surprising long-ranged fire.

Orthuul Fleet Scout (In Service 1995)
When the Usuuth refused to let the Centauri deploy scouts to their system to spy on the Orieni, the Centauri gave them new electronic warfare systems for free in the hope that the Usuuth would do the spying for them.  In the end they used their sole scout, based on the Orthuus hull, to keep watch on both races.

Based on the Serron, the Sethrus was an attempt to develop new ships using weaponry purchased from the Drazi.  Unfortunately the Orieni found out about the new weapons and bribed the Drazi not to supply any more.  The Usuuth had started to reverse engineer the particle cannons when the Orieni invaded.

The Rogolon Dynasty

The Rogolon are a minor race bordering on the Centauri Republic.  Originally a feudal structure with multiple clans they were eventually united under a single ruling family.  Under this new Imperial Family, the Rogolon slowly grew to accept technology with each change being carefully evaluated to ensure that it did not interfere with their traditions and did not impact on their warrior culture.

Eventually, in 1863, the Rogolon reached the closest world in their star system.  From there an observatory detected what turned out to be a jump gate at the edge of the system.  Realising they were not alone in the universe the ruling family renamed itself the Rogolon Dynasty and set about sending ship to explore nearby space.

In 1956 the Rogolon encountered the Orieni and found out just how small they were in comparison.  Shortly after that they encountered the Centauri.  It was only due to these empires going to war with each other that saved the Rogolon from subjugation – they just weren't important enough.

Chelek Strike Fighter (In Service 1951)
A super-fast fighter designed to allow their pilots to streak out ahead of the fleet and engage enemy fighters in one-on-one duels.  Unfortunately the fighters are needed more to defend their own carriers than charge off after the enemy.

Vostor Assault Fighter (In Service 1959)
A large fighter with anti-ship missiles and defensive guns, the Vostor was intended to warriors to gain honour by attacking larger enemies.  Unfortunately it is not deployed in sufficient numbers to get past the defensive weaponry and fighters of other races.

Ships

Rogolon culture emphasises personal honour and a lack of protection and this has carried over to their ships.  Encounters with raiders have not been sufficient to show them the error of their designs.  Instead they have just built bigger.

Initially used to supply their outposts and then for trade with the Centauri and Orieni, the Levaston is sufficiently undergunned to be considered a good prize by raiders.

The second size of warship constructed after first contact, the Tolov is more of a stepping stone to larger vessels than an end in itself.  However, it is an adequate design so long as the enemy do not have decent fighters.

Centauri Privateers

Used prior to the Orieni War to raid both each other and neighbouring races, the various Noble Houses of the Centauri Republic supported fleets of “independent vessels” to allow them deny responsibility for their actions.  During the war those Houses directly threatened by the Orieni used these privateers to supplement their own forces, resulting in large losses.

Following the war, the Royal Navy clamped down on the remaining privateers and as a result many went rogue and became raiders.


Ships
While equipped with the same technology as other Centauri vessels, they are not fleet combatants and suffered badly when used as such.


Cestus Attack Ship (In Service 1870)
Based on the Tacit police ship hull, the Cestus mounted older weapons that are easier and cheaper to maintain.  This reduced cost resulted in them being used in numbers by even the poorest privateers.

Dux Jump Cruiser (In Service 1910)
The main problem for the privateers, and other raiders, was their lack of access to jump engines meaning they had to enter a target system through a jump gate, which if not actively defended would at least be monitored resulting in surprise being lost.  As a result the Dux, based on the Celerian cruiser hull, as developed to allow the privateers to come and go as they pleased.
While caller cruisers and quite well armed compared to other raiders, these vessels were not intended to engage enemy warships and many of them went rogue during the war rather than face the Orieni.

Originally used for a short time in 1722 by the Royal navy as an attack destroyer they didn't fit in with the fleet doctrine of the time of larger ships and were withdrawn from service by 1915.  As a result they were cheaply available second-hand and where used to equip the privateers.

In addition to the fighters listed here, raiders would make use of almost any fighter they could get their hands on.  When operating as mercenaries the employing government would often use their own fighters and pilots on raider vessels.

Adder Light Fighter (In Service 1730)
Based on a Draxi design, the Adder is the original raider fighter.

A basic fighter, the Delta-V is cheap to produce.

An attempt to improve the Delta-V by mounting two of them together, one on top of the other.  While slightly more sturdy they take up more room and cannot use the external launch rails used on many raider vessels.

A respectable breaching pod used to deliver price crews to vessels that are still resisting but the raiders can't risk destroying with weapons fire.

Ships

The original raider vessels were refits of early Drazi vessels.  These were then joined by the now rogue Centauri privateers with their vessels refitted with alternative weaponry for ease of maintenance.  Later ships are either conversions of civilian hulls or captured patrol ships, with a few purpose built vessels for mercenary work.


Ruffian Cruiser (In Service 1741)
Predecessor to the Looter, the Ruffian lacks the jump engine but carries more fighters.
The design was upgraded in 1972 to more advanced weaponry.

After the fall of the Usuuth home world the captains of the many Ussuth freighters around the galaxy made contact with various raider groups.  They exchanged their cargos for additional weaponry and protection.  While still slow and lightly-armed these small vessels showed the raiders the advantages of using packs of small vessels in their operations.

Sanctuary Base (In Service 2196)
The sanctuary bases used by raiders are made from the same ring-style sections as civilian bases and Earth Alliance Orion starbases.  These bases are normally only used by large raider groups who will enter into an agreement with the local government to be allowed to build the base in exchange for protection from other raiders.  They are only lightly armed and are used for resupply and repair rather than defence.

Probably the ultimate non-jump capable raider vessel.  Based on the bulk freighter hull it keeps a significant amount of cargo capacity while mounting the weaponry and hanger bays behind camouflaged panels.  This allows the ship to blend in with normal civilian traffic and to unload cargo in ports without raising too much suspicion.

Based on the standard civilian freighter hull, the wolf raider is disguised to look like any other freighter.  However, the cargo bays have been replaced with concealed hangers and weaponry.  This makes it just about impossible for patrol ships to know if a freighter is a genuine commercial vessel or a hidden raider.

The Tirrith Free State

Originally a mining colony before the Dilgar War, the facilities at Tirrith were destroyed during the conflict.  Later the Abbai, Brakiri, Drazi, Narn, and Vree all attempted to claim the system, and even the Earth Alliance built a small base there, but none could hold on to more than a small portion of it.

Eventually the various races decided the system was more trouble than it was worth with many raider groups having been attracted to the troubled system.  When they left the Earth Alliance intended to destroy their base but raider agents disabled the charges.  With the governments gone the raiders set up their own independent system.

It is now the place to go to acquire questionable cargos or transfer goods that you don't want anyone looking too closely at.

The Junkyard Dogs

A relatively new raider group operating between Earth Alliance, Narn, and Centauri territory.  Their name comes from their habit of scavenging old battlefields for ships to salvage and convert into raiders.

Now fielding a large fleet it is probably only a matter of time before one of the governments puts together a fleet to hunt them down.

The Independent Mercenaries League

Formed in during the Dilgar War from the crews of Belt Alliance escort vessels who found themselves out of work when the Earth Alliance closed the borders in an effort to stay out of the conflict.  Some of the crews became raiders but others became mercenaries and hired out to the League worlds that were desperate for more ships.

Over the years since the war ended members of other races have joined and the vessels have been upgraded or replaced by those from League worlds grateful for their assistance.

The Minbari Protectorate

The Protectorate is a region of space containing a number of minor races that is under the protection and control of the Minbari Federation.


Ships

The ships operated by the Protectorate are based on Minbari hulls and use Minbari weapons, but the stealth systems have been removed.  As in the event of an actual invasion the Minbari would send fleet units to assist, all of these vessels are intended for anti-raider operations.

They do operate a small number of Letann Scouts which retain the stealth systems, and a much larger number of Toroth frigates and Rogata tugs with them removed.


Tradana Combat Frigate (In Service 2266)
Based on the Torotha hull, the Tradana is a warship rather than a troop carrier.  Produced in large numbers by the Protectorate it removes the close-range assault weaponry and replaces it with neutron lasers.

Imperial Star Legion

A group of raiders led by Leon Capelli, the Legion as formed during the Earth Civil War when they acquired a letter of marquee from Babylon 5.  Initially the group was careful to capture vessels rather than destroy them and treated their prisoners well.

After the end of the conflict the Legion was now no longer needed and they were ordered to cease operations in Interstellar Alliance territory.  Instead they used the wealth they had accumulated to purchase additional vessels from the Denenth and set off for a group of worlds known as the Minbari Protectorate.

Initially the Protectorate didn't tell the Minbari they were under attack as they believed they should be able to handle a band of raiders by themselves, but eventually the secret came out when the Legion pursued a convoy into Minbari space and attacked it near to a colony world.

Once word was out about the Legion's attacks, the Interstellar Alliance assembled a number of fleets with both Earth and Minbari vessels in them to hunt down and destroy the Legion and its base.  While they eventually discovered the base, the massive Legion fleet, much larger than anyone expected, repulsed the initial attack and by the time the Interstellar Alliance returned the base had been abandoned and the Legion had vanished.

Earth Alliance Medusa Battleship
This class was apparently in development during to the Earth-Minbari War as an attempt to match the power of the Sharlin, and rumours continue that a prototype was destroyed by the Minbari although both the Earth Alliance and the Minbari deny this.  This massive ship is heavily armed but slow.  Unusually among Earth Alliance vessels it doesn't carry any fighters.

Just a note--the forum seems to have screwed the Traveller up--it seems to be missing a battery in the 'B' direction, and the specials as well as the notes are bolded. Think you might have to either italicise or underline your notes...

Thanks - it looks like the forums treat a weapon mount that only bears in the B-arc as the same as the coding for Bold.

I have sorted it now but it is probably something that people need to keep an eye on when posting ships.

I know--when I wrote up the Olhaz ships for my Warring Triumvirate setting, the arcs of the z'Hakhre means quite a large section was bolded and it lost the B weapon, and it took me a while to sort it out.../shrugs

I'm new to Starmada and have come to the game from playing Babylon 5: A Call to Arms from Mongoose and looking for an alternative system.  I've got some questions about your ships, it might be that I don't understand the rules enough yet.

I'm a Shadows player and at first glance the ships look good.  However now I've read the rules it doesn't seem as though the beam is that powerful.  I'm referring to the 1/3+/1/4 version.  It'll do a maxium of 4 damage to a ship and if the other ship has shields it'll be very poor due to the 1 IMP dmg.

Secondly the main ships have only one weapon (as seen in the show) but it seems as though the ship can be disabled quite easily due to this fact.  Have I missed something?

The thing is, the Slicer Beam has Extra Hull Damage, which gives it a guaranteed four hull damage against enemy ships, which in this conversion is good enough to wreck almost any ship. Couple that with a 66% chance to hit (83% at short range), and a shadow cruiser is as fearsome as it was in B5W (just a little hamstrung because of its inability to split beams, though).

Ah I've now seen that extra hull dmg will give it between 4 and 8 hull damage, that makes it powerful. 

However what about the fact it's just one weapon?  A lucky shot renders this powerful ship useless.  I'm thinking of changing it to be mulitple weapons in the same arcs, to represent being able to fire at mulitple targets and build in some protection against losing the weapon early.  Any thoughts?

This is a conversion from the old AoG Babylon 5 Wars rules and ships, not of the ACTA ships.  In that system the big Shadow ships generally only have one weapon, but it is a very good one.  This can mean that a single lucky hit to that weapon can cause it serious problems.  I seem to remember that Self Repair in B5W could repair systems rather than hull so less of an issue in that system - nothing ever converts precisely between systems.

Given that almost all the conversions have large amounts of unused space due to differences between the rules systems you could easily give it 4 weapons each with just 1 damage.  It would probably increase the CR slightly but you would need to take 4 weapon hits to become disarmed.  You will then be able to either concentrate your fire on a single target or spread the pain around (useful against fighter flights).  Depending on the hull value of the specific ship you may still only have a single entry on the weapon damage chart which would make it almost impossible to destroy all the weapons.

I have similarly had problems with the Vorlon ships which can fire their Lightning Guns in different combinations from individually to all together but Starmada doesn't (easily) allow you to design a ship that way.  I have therefore gone for what I consider to be the "optimal" choice but that does come at a price.  On the other hand you can easily play a game in a couple of hours with a large fleet that would take much longer in B5W.

I am currently looking at an alternative conversion from B5W which would probably see smaller ships (I want the very biggest to be Hull 30 including the very large bases) and slightly less powerful weapons.

Yeah, I realise you've converted from B5W and I prefer that.  It's what I want to do too as I see those ships as more official.  I don't like ACTA anymore so I'm not using that as a basis.  I've got all the B5W ship sheets, but it'll be easier if I can take someone elses conversions as a base, rather than do the all the work wink

I'm thinking of converting all beams to mulitple weapons (probably x2), so they can split fire if they choose.  I want to try and give them the "beamy" feel in Starmada as much as possible.

There are other conversion on this forum but all the zips are corrupt, so yours is the one I'm looking at first.  I'm not sure I want to go for the 0 shields idea yet, but I'm going to give it a go.  I presume this works for you, but how have you found it when fighting againt the ships with shields like the Shadows, when a lot of weapons only have 1 IMP?

Just as an aside, if you were to do that I would suggest adding fire-linked to the weapons so they do act like a single beam weapon...:)
