Topic: Nova Edition, Naval-style Dreadnought

Here is my Large Dreadnought design.  I wanted to be simple, well protected, have adequate firepower and good AA ability.  All the weapons have Guided which means no modifications for range & Accuracy to make 'em more effective.  All my ships will have these two.  This will make it easier for me to play these designs.  The Fire Control will help counteract ECM & Stealth that the target may have, and also will help with AA fire.

I prefer simpler designs, so I like it.
I'm not sure what the "RT" arc is, though, unless it's the opposite of "TR"? I don't think it's in my copy of the rules.

If that's the case, my only recommendation would be to consider slightly more restricted arcs for the secondaries, such as the "PP" and "SS." With the ranges on your weapons, you shouldn't have any problem keeping prospective targets on your broadsides, so the slightly more restricted arcs would be a slight cost savings, or allow for a few more secondary dice.

With no ECM or shields you're relying on your armor to slow down internal damage, so having at least as many armor boxes (or more) as hull is a good thing.

Sticking with her namesake, I think I'd like to see more oomph from those 5-inchers. More of them, honestly, rather than more power - the original did have 22 guns in that caliber after all. And while they're useful for AA fire, they're not in my eyes sufficient, without sacrificing offensive power. Maybe tack on some 3" short ranged guns for that duty?

And any thought of adding a few Drones to simulate the torpedo tubes?

I was going to save the drones for a DDG design.   I could use seekers as torpedoes or as missiles.  I need to read up on them and see whichw orks best as which.

I have modified the design of this ship to lower cost, yet increase resistance to Marines, increase thrust, and add close-range AA weapons.  I must confess that having the cost exactly 400 is fun.  And there is 153 spaces left.  Hmmmm 153 Cargo?  I could call this ship an a (Well) Armed Merchant ship... lol

Here is my latest version.  Having FX & AX for the heavy weapons makes these ships Very Costly.  Therefore, the Heavy Torpedos will be the ship killers & everything else is support.  The ships have 22 Hull & 45 Armor:

Would like to see the calculations for this.
Is the armour "Ablative"?
If so did you use 114 "Regular" armour to get the 76?
What ORAT & DRAT did it have?
Any tech levels?

Tech Level is Zero. 
The regular armor is 76, which means there is 51 Ablative Armor to protect the 22 hull. 
The cost of 503 is what the DryDock gave me. 
Keep in mind that this ship has Fragile Systems...

Also remember apart from the massive armour, there is no defences whatsoever. And a quick calc for armour only gives me an armour score of roughly 4.3 (not sure what values fire con and fragile systems give), so its not too surprising compared to some of the ships designed with a combination of shields and ECM that his ship seems so low CR-wise.

Remember, shots at his BBs will incur no penalty, while an ECM of 2 will, effectively, halve those salvoes from his big guns (or, more accurately, by 33% as the two step drop takes it from 3 to 2--only when combining salvoes would it be a 50% loss). Also, a shield value even of six will stop some of those hits, and a heavily shielded vessel (3-6/2-6) will be stopping on average 66-83% of shots from those cannons, although there is still a 50% chance of getting hit hard by those torpedoes.

However, BeowulfJB obviously likes the slugging matches, so fair play to him...:D I'd be more concerned if every fleet became a cookie-cutter fleet, which is kind of why of my two supplements one had scout and escort ships and the second one didn't.

Two things confused me, the first being 76 "boxes" of armour.
I get CRAT of 498. (ORAT 1559.15/DRAT 159.15) and "It tasks me", calcualtions are to two decimal places (as per thread),.
Even if it were a rounding thing I do not think it should be out by that much. I am 99.9% sure that my figures are up to date.

The difference is only 5 which is c1%;  Paul, I think your program is fine. 8-)   
This ship has two weapons with TR arc and two with the arc RT.  Do you have the correct modifiers for the RT arc and for the CD arcs the five Heavy Torpedoes have?  Just a stab in the dark.

PS:  This ship design is my largest.  I have smaller DNs.   These Capital Ships would be accompanied by DDs that have a CR of between 75 and 133.  I have no cruisers as of yet.  I prefer task forces made up of DNs & DDs

I checked the modifiers, even kept the CD mod of 1.16 (Dan's figure) instead of 1.15,
One thing I did miss though (went back and to read the thread again) was the 1.17 added to the defence score for ablative armor!
I think that might restrict how much armor can be carried as ablative.
I may well add it to to the next version of Shipyard Nova.

What type of restrictions are you proposing for the amount of Ablative Armor a ship can have?  If it is a added rule that a ship cannot have more ablative armor than hull, that would work. 
:idea: I could change the "Arizona" design to accomodate that.  This changed version of the ship would have 39 Hull and 59 regular armor.  This 59 regular armor is equilivant to 39 Ablative Armor, which is the same # as the hull.  The cost is the same and level of protection is actually the same.  And I get 2104 extra spaces, which I could change to 2100 Cargo and call this ship an armed freighter.  A well armed freighter...

I was referring to the added cost in SU restricting higher amounts of ablative armor. Which in the case of your ship posted on 30th April would be an extra 305.5 SU. (If I have my figures right. smile )

I guess my ships in Full Thrust would most the "German" ships.  My friends & I played Full thrust until we found Starmada.  Both are good games, but the ability to design your own weapons makes Starmada a Much Better game.
This design is my largest.  I like to think of it having "Reinforced Hull", which was a trait available in Starmada Compendium Edition.  I played Starmada Compendium a while agi extensively. This trait allowed the ship so equipped to take two damage points to destroy one hull box.  It made my ships very damage resistant...
I think of this ship's being a size 20 ship with Reinforced Hull; its 58 armor is treated as 39 Ablative Armor.  There is an advantage that this 40 hull version has over the 22 hull version:  It would be more resistant to boarding, should it be decided that Marines don't have to take over Ablative Armor.

This newest version of my Largest Dreadnought has a lot of firepower and adequate defenses. It will take 37 hull hits before this ship is damaged. After that is goes away fairly quickly...

I deleted all of the Sct & Dfs because they are ignored for any AA fire at fighters, etc.
The Mass Drivers that I had were not worth their cost & were deleated also.  Their is no piercing on any weapons because no one here in Jacksonville uses shields on their ships anymore.  I don't use ECM because it is one more thing to keep track of, for me.  This ship is simple to play, challanging to manuever & get a full broadside off.
I make it a personal choice to not have more Ablative Armor than Hull on any of my ships.
This USS Arizona is no longer my biggest ship.  I have made an IJN Yamato; it has a CR=675 and is larger with more firepower. :!:

Three signifiicant revisions to this evolving design:
  The previous version without the Mass Drivers was not a success, so I added them back. 
  To keep costs down, I reduced the firepower of the main guns a little.
  The trust was Increased to Five (!)

I played this version of the Arizona Class yesterday at the AncientCity Con here in Jacksonville in several games.  It worked well.  8-)

This ship worked well.  The "20 Mm T-L Guns" are for shooting at fighters/seekers, etc.  They also work very well when I move this ship to range one against hostile ships.  With the thrust=5, that is easier. 
When I calculate how many dice to roll for the three T-L Gun batteries, I add all the T-L Gun dice together & roll all of them at once since they have the same weapon traits.  This way the ship only needs three rolls of dice to fire all its weapons. (First I roll Plasma Guns, then T-L Guns, then Mass Drivers)

Instead of thinking of this ship as being huge, I prefer to think of it as having a Strong Hull, say the effect of having Reinforced Hull from the earlier versions of Starmada.
This ship can be thought as being an 18.5 Hull ship for size, but each hull point absorbs two points of damage.

I have given all of the weapons a more generic name so that I can use this design and sheets for the following PreWW2 DNS:  The USA's Nevada, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Tennessee, & Colorado classes.  Also good for the British Queen Elizabeth class & Revenge class.  Increase speed to 7 & It becomes the HMS Hood or USA's Lexington class BCS.  It also can be the WW1 German Baden class BBs.  I have minis in 1/2400 for all these that I use...

This version has some of the heavy guns in the casemates which gives them a CD arc.  Although the original naval ships did not do this, I find it makes my ships have a more cost-effective main battery; more bang per CR.
I use this ship design for all of the US DNs from Pennsylvania class thru the Colorado class. Also I use this for all British DNs of Q.E. & R Class. This way, when I make changes, I only have to print out one new sheet. :ugeek:

This version is optomized for long-range fire, works best at range 13 to 18.  Heavy firepower.
