The Reman Empire:
The Reman Empire is the result of an attempt by early alien visitors, commonly known as “Greys”, to transplant a small colony of primitive earthlings to the distant star of Novus. The earthlings called themselves Romans and methodically enslaved the only sentient native life on the planet, a highly adaptable race of marsupials resembling a cross between a Lemur and a Frilled Lizard able to manipulate and use tools like a racoon. After several hundred years of servitude and selective breeding by the Romans the slaves, now calling themselves Remans, revolted against their masters. The humans, who had never achieved great numbers, were either killed or enslaved themselves by the Remans. It turned out the Remans were extremely proficient learners and the surviving Romans died out after a mere 4 generations 'in captivity'.
The Remans made good use of the Roman science and government. Over the next millennium many advances including both scientific and military were made. The result, the Reman Stellar Navy and Reman Legion. The Remans are in a state of expansion, seeking out new territories in space to annex and exploit for the glory of Reme. Encounters with alien races unable to resist their military might end in these races becoming 'protectorate states of Reme' and burdened with higher taxes and tariffs in trade than Reme herself.
Located approximately 890 Light Years to galactic north of Earth, Reme is the center of an Empire composed of 47 star systems…3 intelligent races…and growing. Slavery itself is outlawed in the Empire, but those of the protectorates are treated little better than such. Ruling this Empire is the Reman Triumvirate who preside over the Imperial Senate composed of 97 members. Justicos and Vigilese rule over and enforce the Imperial Laws. Where they are unable to, the Reman Legion does so with an iron fist.
Trade is taxed and regulated within the Empire by means of special Imperial Charters. Traders who ply their profession within the Empire without the proper charter face fines, imprisonment, or termination depending on the political power of the person they irritate. All outside trade is regulated and allowed only at senatorially designated planets. Most non-imperial traders who violate this edict only lose their ship…the first time caught. The second time usually results in a short trip out of the nearest airlock…without a suit.
