Topic: fold-ups for the DVG armies

Seriously, would you folks consider it?

I'll buy the minis when there are enough to develop a whole army.  But you have a nice universe drawn up, with fully established armies, and really, the only way to try and play them is to use proxies that don't even look close.

Other titles (including a MJ12games game) uses cardstock foldups in lieu of minis, and as the minis come into being, the fold ups will likely be phased out by a lot of folks.

I'm just saying, I know at least one guy who would buy them.

Nope...
I wouldn't even consider foldups.

I usually gravitate toward games that have either a line of minatures, or an army construction system that lets me use the ones I've got.
If a system has a construction system but no miniatures line, and also has an acceptable universe, I'll only use any pre-generated armies if those armies fit with any miniatures I've already got. Such as stuff from Warzone, Void, VOR, Cobalt, or Alternative Armies.

That's why with any design work I do for MJ12 I do specifically with an eye towards existing miniatures lines. The ARES Bestiary is one very good example of that. Every troop type that's in there has a model that either is available, or was available at one time.

Each his own.  And I think there are a fair number of people who feel like I do.  Otherwise you wouldn't see the things popping up.

I love painting minis.  I got my Russians and Japanese ships painted up for GF.  But there are folks out there, like me, who don't have a ton of skirmish minis on hand, and would actually like to PLAY before sinking their $$ (and a few weeks of their lives at some workbench) into a ton of metal.

Re: fold-ups for the DVG armies

Following up, I see very little risk in it, as well.

You spend some time putting some artwork to a PDF, then establish it on line.

Folks who need it before their minis come in, BUY it.

Jeesh.  There's definitely a market for it.  How many of those lines do you see at RPGnow.com?

It doesn't have to be for everyone, but it would help a number of folks.

Re: fold-ups for the DVG armies

Hey now, I'm not bagging on anyone who would use foldups.
I simply answered your question.

For a tabletop miniatures game, they're just not for me.
I do use, and will probably continue to use, the counters from Avalanche Press for some of my games of Grand Fleets.
So I'm not totally opposed to card stock.
I do see GF as more of a board game, though, and not a TTG.
So I guess that's why I'm not as opposed to using counters for it.
The important thing is to play the game, and so you should "use what you gotta use."

Re: fold-ups for the DVG armies

hey, i would love some fold-ups
i played 40k (by GW) for a while and then got out when i came to college... i'm not too keen about dropping lots of money into more miniatures.  especially not when there's something else out there.
with something as customizable as the defiance system, it'd be great to have a bunch of different fold-ups to use to test an army, even if you wanted to buy miniatures.  you could test out ideas and see which ones suited you best.

Not angry Kevin.   big_smile

Just itching to actuall play something along the lines of a skirmish game.  And I gotta tell ya, single dad, 2 kids.  I'd lose my a-- right now trying to invest in a legitimate army.  Tires, medication for the dog, family vacation and my need to show the girlfriend she's appreciated are KILLING my "me" money.

Re: fold-ups for the DVG armies

I'd consider it, but it would require a good bit more artwork than we currently have available.  Plus, we'd need to add color to all of the exisiting artwork.

Any volunteers?   :?:
