Shouldn't SOME Germanic/Scandinavian ships be called 'Odin', or 'Thor', perhaps 'Wotan'? Dan called some SOVIET ship 'Perun', which was the Slavic God of Thunder/ Thor equivalent. The Soviets were aetheists. :-/

However, Sleipnir is from the Norse mythology. I can't remember exactly, but its before Ragnarok, and after the Vanir/Aesir War...:D

Sleipnir is Odin's eight-legged horse, given to him as a gift from Loki.  Also (like many critters in Norse myth) an offspring of Loki, who could give Zeus a run for his money in the "Deities That Sleep Around A Lot" category.  Must be something about being able to shapechange that makes you randy.  The eight legs symbolize a variety of things depending on who you listen to, including compass directions and a coffin being carried by four pallbearers.

Interesting ships.  That carrier's dirt cheap for what it brings to the table, although the FACs will add a lot of cost, won't they?

Not to me. 

To me, the commies were trying to lend a mythical/awe-inspiring air to their 2nd generation ships.  Notice they didn't name 1st gen after mythical figures, but after people.  They went back to old, Slavic cultural roots and brought them back to the fore front.

Secondly, commies put down modern religions.  They oppressed Greek Orthodox and the Jewish communities.  But how many Russians were actively worshipping Perun when Lenin showed up?  I'm figuring about  as many modern Europeans as still worship Thor.

Last, by name shippings after ancient, pagan gods, I see them showing some intentional irony -- mocking western Judeo-Christian states and values.

Alright, I can see that, now that you've explained it. They saw Communism as the answer to so many of man's problems, and as such could mock the "gods of old", setting them up as things to be feared by others, but tools to the "greatness of  the Soviet Ideal".

Someone needs to get all these 'designer comments' from the forums and put them into a 'Making of Iron Stars' book....

Just got back from the gym, gotta take a shower and run a few errands.

I agree the Janes approach will help show what fleet designers were thinking when they came up with their hulls.  I was just slapping my forehead because the Soviet ships are already out there, and I realized NO ONE would know what I was thinking at the time.

And as for being an a--, I think the personality trait is grossly underestimated big_smile

EVERY job I've had to date, they've wanted me to be aggressive.  And I'm a poly sci major to boot.  I love throwing stuff back and forth in an open forum.

Nah....

I figure at some point, we're gonna need to gather all the supplemental rules up in a single volume  We've had people suggest a LOT of stuff, and some stuff that's been added to cover new systems that's in the books. A sort of 'Iron Stars Compendium" if you will. We couldn't have gotten it into a single book at the start - as the systems in question hadn't even been thought of at that point.

Designer Commentary would be something interesting to add in.

The Ula-class FAC is named after a submarine that was in Norwegian service in WW2 (of course, before the Nazis over-ran them). I use sub names for FACs because I don't know many aircraft names (in that respect, Im like the man on the street--can name a few of the popular ones, maybe some other ones, but nothing else)

The Nordenfelt FAC was originally a sub for the Greeks...:D
