Topic: Just bought and read the game...2 questions to start

As I was thinking of trying to use them for Victorian SF, i i wondered how 2 things were simulated....

1  Field guns with say 3 crew? A light vehicle with very low move perhaps? Don't know. There does not seem to be a 'gun' frame mechanism to simulate AT guns etc.

2 Cavalry???!!! Adhoc unit or just a size 3 frame counting the rider and mount as one?

I will read on.. smile

Hi Ironchicken,

1. On pg. 39, there are rules for "crew-served weaponry".

2. The rules consider mount and rider as one.  So, yes, cavalry is probably best described as size 3 infantry with sprint capability, and perhaps a DC of 2 and/or a powerful HTH rating.

If you design a VSF army, let us know...

TY

The crew served thing is a challenge because no more than 1/2 a unit may be armed with support weapons and both crew count as being armed with a support weapon. therefore you must have 2 spare men for each gun. Not a classic form for gun team dedicated units. mixed units wont give the right feel. Perhaps a unit augementation may be appropriate, if you have any ideas.

I could see a classic infantry or field gun in Defiance as: Crew served, infantry braced, slow loading and dedicated loader giving 3 crew, two of which count support weapon armed and the loader not. 2 guns with 8 men seems to be a reasonable group.

Hmmm, thanks for catching that...I must've not been thinking when I wrote the specific text.  The intent of crew-served weaponry is that a unit could consist of nothing but 2 people per big gun, if desired.

Consider this is an erratum: crew-served weapons count as the support weapon for *one* of the crew members.

A friend, back when we played a (!) game of Starslayer (Defiance MK1) used a size 3, 2 DC sprint-capable, field-save equiped infantry frame to represent a vampire lord on horseback. We added a Terror CDW.

It was alarming how many individual morale tests my troopers failed once he hit my line, and he caused mass casualties in close combat thanks to diversions, morale failures, and use of terrain.

I always the rule a bit odd myself but I was assuming you were thinking when you wrote it tongue

And another question about vehicles...

It says minimum unit size for vehicles is 2 or none. Therefore i assume you can field vehicles as individuals although the text that follows is a bit confusing...

What are the advantages/disadvantages of single vehicles over units of 2 or more? I cannot see a reason to ever field vehicles in groups in the rules unless it was a group of fast lights.

This is correct.

The advantage of fielding vehicles as Standard Units is that such don't count towards your points allocation of Ad Hoc units, unlike single vehicles. The distadvantage would be that vehicles puchased as part of unit need to make a unit morale check just as every other unit in the game. Failing it is less fatal than for most infantry tho as a vehicle can't be eliminated due to failed personal morale.

That's about it as far as I can think of right now, as vehicles otherwise act the same regardless of being in a unit or alone (<-- edit: typo).

Re: Just bought and read the game...2 questions to start

You can mix vehicles in a squad though, so you could have a standard deployment consisting of a tank, an APC, and an armoured car.

Right? Does that count as Exclusive because it mixes frames, or Exclusive because it's a vehicle squad?

Both.  But it usually doesn't matter, since the point cost of vehicles makes the use of more than one unit very rare.
