Topic: SXCA

I am having trouble duplicating the Seraphin class Battle Carrier from the Starmada X rulebook using the SXCA v2.61. Under the Seraphin description the Weapon and Equipment TLs are 1 while the Engine and Shield Techs are 0. I get a ComRat of 1,734, which is very close to the book value but I cannot get the SU used to match up.
As I look into the spreadsheet, I see that Security teams are affected by TL. I am very confused as to what is and isn't affected by TL mods. Help.

Re: SXCA

Sometimes a 10,000,000th of a point off is reflected in a couple dozen point of CR off in the SS... Plus microsoft is evil.

although there is a good chance there are errors in the spreadsheet.

Actually, I'm more inclined to accept that there are errors in the rulebook than in the spreadsheet.

Anyway, the official list of equipment UNAFFECTED by Tech Level:

Armor Plating
Armored Gun Batteries
Cargo Bays
Construction Bays
Ionic Shielding
Medical Bays
Organic Hull
Passengers
Redundant Shielding
Repair Bays
Science Labs
Shockwave
Stutterdrive
Troops
Vehicle Bays

I also get 1734, so I don't know what happened when putting together the book. As for the space, it's "only" an overage of 42 SUs... and I'm sure we all know the significance of that number. smile

Re: SXCA

So fighter bays, launch bays, and marine squads are affected by tech level Dan?  (from the Starmada FAQ thread List)

As the SXCA currently exists, yes. (I assume I set it up that way for a reason...)

Re: SXCA

Hi, I'm pretty new to Starmada X and have been playing around with Starship construction over the past couple of days.

Can someone please tell me why SXCA doesnt always line up with the Starmada X Rulebook when some of the tech levels are not 0?

I went through the Starmada X rulebook and tried to duplicate all the Imperial Starships and the Arcturan Starships with the SXCA Excel Spreadsheet.  Since all the Imperial Starships were tech 0 in all fields they all matched, but, some of the Arcturan Starships didnt match up since they are Tech 1 in Weapons and Special Equipment:

Lancer-class Acturan Corvette (23)
Results 23 (2) - Why is it illegal by 2 in SXCA?

Peregrine-class Acturan Escort (44)
Results 44 (5) - Why is it illegal by 5 in SXCA?

Thunderbolt-class Acturan Dreadnought (453)
Results 455 - Why is the combat rating 2+ more than the book

Concordia-class Acturan Command Carrier (518)
Results 518 ( 28 ) - Why is it illegal by 28 in SXCA?

Agustus-class Acturan Assault Transport (537)
Results 537 (6) - Why is it illegal by 6 in SXCA?

Seraphim-class Acturan Battle Carrier (1732)
Results 1734 (42) - Why is it illegal by 42 in SXCA & Why is the combat rating 2+ more than the book?

Am I doing something wrong while using the spreadsheet?

Thanks,

Chewy

Re: SXCA

No, its the spreadsheet.

For some reason, the +1/-1 modifiers are represented on the spreadsheet as something with a square root, while in the book its a simple x.7 or x1.4

I noticed that when double-checking some of my Selorian/Agreatian ships I was designing for a solo VBAM campaign...

The square root thing is only a fraction of the difference. I just took the Concordia class Command Carrier and changed the ^0.5 calculation for TL+1 to a straight 0.7 and the difference went from ComRat 518, SU-28 to ComRat 518, SU -22. That only made up 6 SU.
What I think happened was that Hyperdrive was affected by TL then these ships were designed and in the current spreadsheet it isn't. Just a theory.

Re: SXCA

The spreadsheet is also a bit touchy, depending on the computer it is on.... I have a small hull one ship that I use, and if I make it on my home computer, it has a CR of 10, but when I design the exact same ship at work. it's CR is only 9....

I've noticed that ships I make at work are slightly less expensive, than those I make at home.....everything else being equal.....

What? You want consistency? smile

Actually, the answer is quite simple. The values in the book are wrong.

I used the spreadsheet to compute the values for the book -- but at the time there was an error with the tech levels in the spreadsheet. This has since been fixed, but it means that there are minor inconsistencies with the values, as you've discovered.

The good news is that space overages have no impact on game balance, while the Combat Rating values are never off by more than a couple of percentage points ... so the errors should have no practical effect.

Re: SXCA

Thanks for the FYI Dan,

I thought I was missing something I needed to check in the spreadsheet and was just consitently overlooking it.

Glad to know I havent completely lost it!

Re: SXCA

If you want to design Starships using the VBAM K/E/B system that splits the defense types out, is there a downloadable spreadsheet that does this?

Yes, there is one available on the VBAM yahoo group site.
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/VBAM

It is located in the files section in starmada Construction sheets and it is named VBAM.xlt

Thought I should tell you though, some sheets give different values. They all seem to agree on ComRat. I always assume that the vanilla Starmada SXCA is the gospel when I am using someones construction sheet.

Re: SXCA

The Open Office version still around?

Re: SXCA

The OpenOffice .ods versions are no longer on the Shipyard thread.
They are in .xls but when i added the bits that were requested I have used OpenOffice 2.0. So are still compatible.
Here are the last four versions that I posted:-
Starmada X
Starmada X KEB version
Babyon 5
Babylon 5 KEB version

Re: SXCA

Can someone do a tutorial on the sxca v.7.3 ? Or if one has been done can you point me to it? im obviosly having difficulties with it. it looks like what i need, but its a little over my head.
Can someone give me a boost? big_smile

Re: SXCA

I'm running into a discrepency with the weapons math on the Starmada std shipyard.  It's coming in at twice the SUs it should.  Double checked this against hand calc to verify.

Which version? SXCA 2.61? or the Shipyard spreadsheet v7.3?

Re: SXCA

This is almost comical.
It seems as though as much trouble as you guys are having with the spreadsheets that they (or it, if it's a problem with just one version) need to be looked at and new definitive versions produced.
My suggestion is one for the compendium, and one for X.
New versions of each should eliminate any questions about the validity of the spreadsheets, and end any confusion on which version for each is the current one.

Which is why I tend to prefer doing all my design by hand and calculator. smile  But as my daughter spends more and more time awake these days...time forces some concessions.   lol

Re: SXCA

I had trouble with the weapons maths until I remembered to add the +1 to the ROF in the calculations. So the ROF for ROF 1 is actually ROF 2.
Cannot seem to get the weapon SU to double! You do not say where exactly.
aglass man asked for help, this may be of use.
