Topic: Fold up SHIP COUNTERS

Looking at Spitting Fire.....

And looking at Spitting Fire has me looking at Grand Fleets (which I was doing a while ago anyways, until things got derailed).

And I gotta wonder, wouldn't it be worthwhile for MJ12games to offer fold-up ship counters for WWI and WW2 wet navy hulls, just as it's done for Iron Stars?

Kevin and I had a discussion about this once over the phone.

I think you'd be making some $$ off folks who want to dive into a naval game, but want something maybe a little more immersive than top down counters -- but don't want to spend weeks painting before they actually get to play.  Honestly, I have painted minis out the wazoo...but I seem to suffer from an affliction in that by the time I'm done painting for a particular game, I'm kind of like "nah, not so much."  And I move on to something else.

Just offering a suggestion. Kevin's got to have an expansion comin out sooner or later.  It'd be a nice test run. smile

I've always thought it *was* a great idea.
And I'll always think it *is* a great idea.
Unfortunately, it seems as though GF is kind of one of the redheaded step children around here, not getting the support it should or probably deserves.
That's just me thinking out loud though (after a couple of large glasses of wine).

Kevin....

Mail me some decent pix of the ships you'd like to see, I'll see what I can do.... Line drawings, decent B&W, just need to see the major bits.

I can do that.

I'll scan in a few ship profiles and get them sent your way.

Good deal...
I lost your email in my HD crash, so I can't send you some examples until you mail me.  I'd post them on my geocities site, but I've no room, and the 'B5 for Starmada' crowd is evidently still hot and heavy - I'm outta bandwidth. :-)

Basically, I've mastered to some extent 'Anime', 'Greyscale anime' and the 'Iron Stars approach' using DOGA. If I were to start today creating the Iron Stars graphics, I'd do them 'greyscale anime'...

I've improved since the first IS graphics, but nowhere near enough to do photorealistic stuff - even with Poser. I just ain't spending that much on '3D content' that I will eventually be able to do myself.

I tried doing some counters for Jim, but I just ain't there yet.

People that actually look like people are HARD!
:-)

Ships....not that hard. It's just getting the right bits in the right place.

Okay, I'll shut up. As the 'art minion', I'm obviously INTO the art....
:-)

Re: Fold up SHIP COUNTERS

Anything new on this?

Re: Fold up SHIP COUNTERS

Being on a tight budget I have to make choices when it comes to gaming. I was almost to the point of ordering minis for the game when I had several opportunities to gather some really good books. So… I ended up with the Conway's and two Jane's (1905-1906, & WWII).

Now, the budget is spent, what to do?

I am taking the Jane's and scanning the deck pictures, reducing them to fit on bases that I would put minis on and Away All Ships it is.

Not quite as nice but, it gets the job done…  Now for Germany vs. USA as in the book 1901!

Take a look at the following site.
There are a lot of profile and plan views.
You may not have to do much scanning.

Re: Fold up SHIP COUNTERS

Thanks for the link. It is an interesting site and I will be using some of the pics.

The Conway's are stuffed with good info but, the deck plans from the Jane's are priceless for getting an idea of where all those cannons are.

I am considering placing a deck plan on each of my Data Cards for players to mark off which gun placements are lost… Then again, I like to pipe dream a lot <G>.

(PS… meant to say a Jane's WWI not WWII…)

On one of the groups / forums I read, there is a fellow who is scratch building 1/3000 Pre-Dreads. They look really good.
