Topic: Grand Fleets supplements focus

Okay all, I've got a bunch of potential scenarios worked up.
Probably enough for at least three if not four supplements.
All that's needed is some playtesting to verify the victory conditions.
So I'd like some feedback on what you all would like to see first.

1) A mix of more pre-WW I, WW I, and inter-war (Spanish Civil War) battles.

2) A hypothetical WW I Mediterranean campaign involving the
Austro-Hungarians, Italians, French, and British.

3) A mix of WW II battles in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

4) WW II Pacific action, specifically the five Guadalcanal battles and six from the Solomons

Let me know what you'd like to see first.

Mediterranean/Atlantic WWII battles, 'cause there's not nearly as much reference material on that for gaming purposes.

You do realize that Vassal would be a great platform to test scenarios.

Yeah, yeah...
I know.

Kevin - who just needs to figure out how to load Vassal onto his computer.

Re: Grand Fleets supplements focus

I would vote #1, followed closely by #2.

While GF can handle some of the WWII era surface engagements.  WWII is much more focused on airplanes - which IMO is not a strength of GF.

GF serves an excellent niche in WWI/Pre WWI, I would want to see more expansion there before it branches to other eras.

I appreciate the feedback, and I totally agree that GF's strength is not in the handling of aircraft. For large numbers of aircraft, that is.
However, there are many naval engagements in the post-WW I era where no aircraft were involved, or involved to a very minor degree.
Grand Fleets is first and foremost a surface battle game.
You can be reasonably sure we won't be doing Midway or Coral Sea.

Re: Grand Fleets supplements focus

Of course I would say #3 and #4. Way more WWII gamers that WW1. You could also use the same scenario books for other WW2 naval rules which may mean more sales. Possibly even convince some of those OTHER players to give GF a shot since they already own the ships.

Thanks,

John

Re: Grand Fleets supplements focus

I would prefer to see #1 and #2.

However, I agree that the WW2 stuff might broaden the market. But to really broaden the market, GF itself would need to be marketed as a WW2 surface game which it currently isn't. What I'm saying is that if I am a WW2 naval buff and someone tells me that a pre-WW1/WW1 naval game has a supplement out that expands into WW2, I am likely to look for a game that started as a WW2 game. Make sense?

Re: Grand Fleets supplements focus

Hi, I understand what you are saying. However, the rules DO include a WW2 scenario. The fact that MJ12 hasn't pushed the WW2 aspect doesn't mean they won't work for WW2. They do a very nice job of it. You would probably have to tweak the CnC rules a little. But that could be done in the scenario book. Like I said there are a boat load of VAS players from Mongoose out there who would probably be interested in scenario books for Ww2. I know Kevin had the stuff pretty much ready. Do a Print on Demand and you have lost what?  big_smile You can still put out WWI and Predread booklets. I'd like to see them all. I just think the WWII booklets have a commercial viability.

Thanks,

John

Re: Grand Fleets supplements focus

Haven't heard anything on this in a while. . . will we be getting a GF supplement?

We're working on it.
But you'll probably end up getting a new edition before you get a new supplement.

Re: Grand Fleets supplements focus

New edition works too!

I've done quite a bit of playtesting and development work for other companies.  I'd love to contribute to any rules work going on with a new edition.  Is there any way I could help?

Coolness...
I'm not sure how much in the way of new rules we'll be adding, but we'll definitely be able to use scenario playtesting help.
Send me your e-mail address offline, and I'll send you a few scenarios.
