Topic: IMP & DAM question

Hi folks,

I'm new to Starmada, and it is a real breath of fresh air after SFB (especially the construction system)!

I've noticed a lot of useful house rule discussion on this forum and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to modify the interaction between IMP and DAM?

As I understand the rules you can inflict damage for every successful IMP die. Does this mean that a weapon with IMP 3, DAM 1 will perform in a similar way to IMP 1, DAM 3 over a long enough period?

Is there a simple way of limiting a weapon to 1x DAM rating for damage but still varying the ability to penetrate shields with IMP?

At the moment I am just designing weapons with IMP 1 and piercing/non piercing to do this, but I would be grateful if anyone has any game mechanic suggestions or comments?

Re: IMP & DAM question

Hello and welcome to Starmada!
Former SFB player here also.  Your question of comparing a weapon with IMP=3 &DMG=1 with one that has IMP=1 & DMG=3 is a good one.  In the long run they are the same.  I prefer the IMP=1 & DMG=3 myself.  It involves less rolling.  In Fact, some of my BBs have 14 Inch Plasma Guns that are ROF=1, IMP=1, DMG=3.  I roll for each weapon.  Then pic up the dice for those that hit and reroll 'em to see if they penetrate.  Then I take those that penetrated. put two more dice next to them, and roll for damage.
(Those shots that penetrated exploded for three damage points each  )
This makes it easier to play my ships and keep track their firepower.
Hope this helps.  Again Welcome to Starmada big_smile

Re: IMP & DAM question

You could make the weapon Piercing (or non piercing if it is bad at penetrating shields)
