Topic: Atmospheric ships

Dan,
The shipyard allows for VBAM ships to be Atmosphere capable via Engines greater than hull and engines of tech level+2.

VBAM:SE gives a third option, Special atmospheric equipment but does not give SU or CR details for streamlining, aeorodynamic qualities.

Any thoughts?
I think that there should be a hull size limit for Winged ships.

Re: Atmospheric ships

AUX System: Streamlining for 100SU?

Smaller ships are probably not going to need it since they should have enough thrust. Since it doesn't directly effect game play in Starmada itself (only VBAM) I would put it in as an AUX system.

Re: Atmospheric ships

Pull a page out of traveller....Streamlining is an Aux system but takes up 10% of the SUs.

Arguements for this are simple engineering issues.  Less volumetric area and what area there is tends to be used less efficiently or for the needed structural reinforcement.

Re: Atmospheric ships

Thanks for the input.
I overlooked the Stars Divided sxca that comes with the book download.
That has Atmospheric as 20% Hull SU.
I do not know where this calculation comes from as I can not find the figure in the rules.

In all honesty, I don't think it matters from a Starmada perspective -- unless there's an in-game reason to allow ships to descend into an atmosphere. As the ability to land on a planet is more relevant to the strategic level, I'd leave it up to whatever system is being used (e.g. VBAM).
