Topic: Sell me on Starmada...

I know you've probably seen this one before but...

I found Starmada via RPGNow, and it looks pretty interesting. I've been wargaming for twenty years now, and most space combat games I've seen are either too bogged down with detail, or not flexible enough, or.... I'll stop now. :? Starmada looks like it hits things just right.

However, my gaming budget's pretty tight. So before I plunk down my hard-earned dollars,  I present to you the following challenge:

In 100 words or less, sell me on Starmada.

I'll do it in about nine.

Why not just take a look at the demo?

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

I reject your challenge and respond with more than 100 words:

I've blathered on a bit about Starmada:   AE on my site.

You can read about here.

My site has no ads, so this isn't some lame attempt to get hits or anything.

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

In no particular order :

-you can build your ships; free and very easy to use Excel file available
-the pointing system is extremely well balanced
-the game engine has been thoroughly tested and tweaked over the years
-you have tons of options to choose from without turning into SFB
-the rules are intuitive
-the best system so far that can emulate just about any setting
-you can design your weapons, fighters and missiles (strikers)
-can be used with a full vector movement system, a "semi-realistic" vector movement system (default) or plain ol' "cinematic" system.
-it kicks ass

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

Okay, okay, I give up. I'll order a copy as soon as I can get the money.

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

And hopefully soon, we'll have a ready-made Star Trek universe to play in.

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

Star Trek? Bah! Let me know when I can play Honor Harrington's universe!

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

Honor Harrington?

Man, thats going to be difficult to try and do, even an unofficial setting (Is the Saganami Island Tactical Simulator the official game for HH, or is it an official game?)

Never mind. Off the top of my head, beam weapons are either going to be restricted to range-3 weapons or represented by carronades (going by SX here, haven't really gotten into SAE yet, especially with all the minor problems). Missiles (pre-pods and that system in AAC) are going to have to be either drones (customised for either detonation laser missiles, nukes, ECM missiles or simple decoys) or some really customisable weapon mounts with the same options and ammunition constraints.

And another thing: Starmada has always seemed to me to be good at handling the 'space opera' SF setting really well, but HH isn't 'space opera' as regards space combat. Ships never see each other in space at combat ranges, and even ships in the same task force have a difficult job seeing each other. You'd have to have a seriously large map to even attempt to fight a purely HH battle, methinks...

Re: Sell me on Starmada...

True, true. And the battles in HH always seem to be really big battles.

Official - Burnside was crowing about it somewhere back when he started on it. He had the right to crow of course....

Yeah, HH is seriously 'real' except for the magic grav drive, grav shields and FTL....

That's why I like reading them.
