Topic: Onager fire!

Ben and I built an Onager today...our first siege machine!

All told, took about 6 hours from start to finish, look at the video

Yay us!

Re: Onager fire!

Not bad, but I thought an onager was a device that utilised a heavy weight at the end of an arm to fling a weight on the other end? From what I can see there, thats a catapult or mangonel

(yes, I know that with the Greeks the definition of catapult and ballista was the other way around, but I don't want to confuse anyone)

Anyway, good shot. What was it you fired?

Re: Onager fire!

Heavy weight on the end of the bar = Trebuchet, IIRC...

What's with the videos of bathing cats?

Re: Onager fire!

Isn't an onager an ass? smile

Anyway, nicely done!

Although you should have used Ditto for target practice... that would have been funner.

Re: Onager fire!

perhaps I should explain a little better,

the onager was roman for kicking ass smile

we used nothing but twine and 5/8" dowels to make it.

we designed it using a picture of an onager found on the internet.

it was our first siege engine.

Ben is 13.

a catapult is anything that throws stuff, a trebuchet is a heavyweight with an arm and very difficult to use, I built one out of cardstock and use it at work, I'll take a picture of it and post.

That's it I think, the cat bath video is funny if you can hear me saying ow as the cat digs his claws into my back and arms.

um, I like cheese.

I think that it's a good little toy - nice work on that....

I remember reading about siege engines and such back in the happy days we lived in Mesquite, prior to my parents divorcing. I was 12 or 13 years old. I could have spouted all the then-current classifications of all of them back then - just as I was able to give a 45 minute long lecture on Dinosaur classifications back in fourth grade - yes, I got an "A"...

Point being - the archaeological sorts declared different classifications at different times. What you call something varies depending on how old the book is.

..but a Trebuchet is still a B**** to load, but a big one does monsterous damage. Minas Tirith had them - and they were damn cool.

Are those Welders Gloves?

Yes, we always come back to that....

Re: Onager fire!

yes, welder's gloves, and scotch, the two absolutely necessary items if you're gonna bathe a cat
