Topic: How much do you let your opponent know during a combat ?

I found some folks to play with after work. I am explaining the compendium edition.

How much information do you share about your ship during a combat?

Do you show sheets? do you announce banks down?  Without weapons?

Sheilds down? Immobillity?

Do tell?

*I* don't recall anything that addresses 'tactical intelligence' like you'd see in SFB. If you've got SFB, use it to cook up a set of home-brew rules.

I dont think you get what I am asking, or maybe i didnt understand your answer....

I am introducing a new player to starmada.

When you play head to head, is your opponent allowed to know information about your ship record.

Is ithe ship sheet/record completely closed?

I mean, if you do a visual of the ship, youd see weapons being blown off, or know what weapons are visible on the ship (torp tubes, beams, spinal)

Is there something in the rules that I missed that you have to announce when something gets blown off? or shields down etc? do you have to announce engines down?

How do you guys play it?

The default is that all players can know everything about each ship in the game at all times -- i.e. there is no secrecy.

However, many players like to have some amount of "fog of war", and to that end there have been several house rules/variants to achieve it.

It might be that an "official" option should be considered...

as always dan, thanks so much for your prompt and courteous response.

I like the admiralty update by the way. Its much better.

When we were playing a bunch at a game club, you could tell when a ship's shields were completely gone and when the ship had taken 50% hull damage; 'venting atmosphere' we called it (even put some cotton for a reminder).  Other than that, weapon mounts and the actual number of hull remaining were secret.  It worked pretty well for a simple 'fog of war'.

Someone recently put some interesting house rules on the amount of information based on distance that you might try out.

Have fun!

I more or less understood what you meant. Dan (Cricket) gave the 'textbook answer' - and since he's the head man, his answer is the current ruling on the matter.

I assumed you were looking for a set of rules for Tactical Intelligence.

"Tactical Intelligence" is more or less the name of the concept you're asking about. There aren't any real rules in the books. Most guys divulge the entire contents of their status sheets, because it's the least complicated thing to do.

In Star Fleet Battles, they actually have rules for how much information you have about your opponent's ships.

Where did those get posted? I was suggesting, in my previous post, this very thing, based - more or less - on those in SFB...

Re: How much do you let your opponent know during a combat ?

It took me a little while to figure out why I kept loosing when playing my friend - He was keeping his playsheets and as much information as possible to himself, while I was being much more forthcoming.

After adopting a style closer to his, things got a lot more evenly matched.

Re: How much do you let your opponent know during a combat ?

My regular opponent and I pretty much play 100% open sheets. We even roll for the other's damage. The only thing is when we have new designs, we don't go into detail as to which unit can do what, but we do give generic info: "ok these ships here don't have a lot of shields, but they go fast..." etc.

What I do also is that I take down every hit every ship takes, so I know how to better target my weapons. Since doing so I've upped my kill ratio significantly.
