Topic: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

I played a bit of Starmada X and loved it, but love the idea of Dreadnoughts. This will mean a leap into Starmada AE which I am looking forward too. A couple questions to people who have played the game.

Is the game still played on a hex grid?

How realistic of an idea is it to use War at Sea figures for the game. I have a ton of these but don't really care for War at Sea.

Thanks.

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Yes, it is still played on a hex grid.  It would be possible to convert it to a non-hex grid format, but it would take a little tweaking.

The War at Sea ships are perfectly usable, if they fit on your hex grid.  However, be aware that the WaS ships are from WWII.

Dreadnoughts, as the name implies, is focused on WWI.  So you would either have to use the WaS ships as standins, or create the stats for the WWII ships.  As you know already, creating stats for a Starmada ship is not difficult, and I'm sure you could get some help in these forums if you decided to do it.

Alternately, you could purchase actual minis to use with the game.  (Which would be my recommendation.)  You can get 1/3000 scale WWI ships cheaply here:

If you're not much of a painter and are willing to pay somebody else to do it for you, you can get that done here:

http://mywifepaintsbattleships.pbwiki.com/

You can get 3x1" bases for your 1/3000 scale WWI ships here:

http://www.litkoaero.com/

Or again, you could have it done for you at the same place you're getting the painting done.

This is an excellent source for beginner info on battles and ships of WWI:

http://www.worldwar1.co.uk/

It can help you with what the various ships are, what you can buy for various battles, and general inspiration.  I've been doing this a little while now, and I am still out there all the time.

Finally. . .

You might also want to consider checking out Grand Fleets.  Its like a more detailed, d10 based version of Starmada Dreadnoughts.  If, as I have, you discover a love for naval wargaming, its IMO the best surface-combat engine out there.

Welcome, and let me know if you have any questions!

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

I have a map of the baltic from Skageraak to St Petersburg that's at I think 1/2" hexes and 10 miles/hex. It was a project for someone that we eventually printed onto gigantic paper and laminated, I have a pic of it somewhere that show the size of it at 3'x5'

Also the North Sea at 10mile/hex and something called adam's bridge at 5mi/hex

They were for stuff like this

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Yeah, I need to get something like that.  I am dying to run a campaign!

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Thanks for the replies. Yes I know that war at Sea is WW2. The models are simple stand ins. No one will ever accuse me of being a history buff smile Sounds like I could use my Fire as She bears moving hex grid set up for this.

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Would someone want to do up a followup book to Starmada AE: Dreadnoughts and handle the WWII ships with the same scaling of power? It could/would be fun to play.

It might even be fun to play against the Dreadnoughts... smile

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

It seems like the next logical step.  Piercing has about maxed out. . . but you could start increasing the damage dice of the guns for the really big ones, the 16/45s, 16/50s and 18.1's.

Your WWII battleships would be either armor 4 or 5 depending on what they had going.

Some of the really heavily armored ones could have an additional ability related to that.  There used to be armor plating/armored gun batteries in Starmada X. . . I don't recall if there is anything like that in S:AE?

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Another way to add to the armor value of WWII ships without changing dreadnoughts is to remove a number of piercing levels by way of a "thick armor" special or some such (which I know Dan doesn't really like to do, but would work for the World War differences).

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Perhaps one way to simulate the heavier armor of a few of the WW 2 battleships such as IJN Yamato or the unbuilt USS Montana would be to add level 6 Armor/shields to the DN ship-designing program.
Only a few ships would have it.
Other WW2 BBs such as KMS Bismark, HMS King George V, USS North Carolina & USS Iowa, etc.  would only have level 5 Armor/shields.

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

So only weapons with piercing could damage them at all?

Re: Thinking of making the leap to Dreadnoughts

Exactly,  or by rolling a "6", and then rolling 1, 2, or 3.  8)
