A group of us bought the AE rules when they were released and we are finally getting it to the table this weekend. We have all played the last edition but that was years ago.
There will be 4 of us... 2 on 2 teams. How many points for a decent battle with 2-4 ships of varying sizes for each person (so 4-8 ships per team)?

I think that's really going to depend on how powerful you want your ships to be.
Just off the top of my head, I would assume 250 points per ship to be fairly reasonable.
So if you're assuming 8 ships a side, that would be a 2000 point game.
OTOH. . . I'm running a Starmada Star Trek game at Gencon, and I think the average ship is somewhere around 400 - 450. . . so I guess I would suggest building a ship you think is a reasonable 'middle of the road' example, find out how much it costs, then multiply by 8.
Our campaign scenarios run between 800-1400 points a side. It takes us 5-8 turns to settle a typical outing. We're done in 2-3 hours, using the standard AE simultaneous movement system.
My last 1000pt scenario fleet was composed of a single cruiser (~350 pts), two escorts (~125 pts ea.) and seven torpedo boats (~50+ ea), so you can get a wide variety of ships on the table at that level.

Its scheduled for Saturday at 1:00. Its been full on pre-reg for quite a while, but you are welcome to show up in case there are any no-shows.
Our group plays with larger ships with 4000-6000 points-per-side battles, usually having 2-8 ships per side. I did have 18 ships in a battle yesterday (15 of them were 25 points each). I have ships ranging from 15 to 3000 points.
There really isn't an average game.
