Topic: Iron Man

Go see it.  If you like movies, not just comic book movies, go see it.  It was good from start to finish.  May be the best comic book film of all time.  If your into comics stay through the credits...if not leave.

I'm REALLY glad to see this....cause Ironman is one of the few comics that I actually collected (and still have nearly the entire Iron Wars saga). big_smile

Re: Iron Man

Saw it last Friday. Clever, no major problems, no departure from what I was expecting. The ending sorta suxored, but they had to screw the pooch SOMEHOW...

My Iron Man comics are from the late-60's, early-70's. Not many, from when Stark had his first post-chestplate heart problems and dealt with the LMD. Never collected a lot of comics, they were a little rich for me as a child.

Re: Iron Man

read a review in entertainment weekly that was right on.  It said that Iron Man used all the tried and true superhero movie tropes and yet managed to be cool anyway.

Overall, I'd give it an 11/16

Re: Iron Man

Haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard I would have thought Jim would give at least 10.4 out of 15...

Re: Iron Man

Seen it and Own the DVD, its a good Movie.

Different take on the Origin but good none the less.

Re: Iron Man

Got the DVD on the 30th and watched it.  They NAILED it!  (for once!)  Even if it was adapted to modern times instead of the 'nam years.

Yeah, the adaptation for the current conflict vs 'Nam was good.

"I am Iron Man" - bad.

Re: Iron Man

They had to do that tho, 'cause of guitar hero.

I personally thought they pulled even that bit off rather well.

I meant Stark's comment at the end, not the music.

The music ROCKED! Could have been placed/mixed a bit better, though...

Re: Iron Man

Loved the movie myself -- including the "I am Iron Man" line at the very end. I'm not sure why that would be classified as "bad"... Am I missing something in the comic book continuity?

However, the thing I'm getting annoyed with is the "polar opposites" approach to the bad guys: i.e. Iron Man fights Iron Monger, Hulk battles Abomination.

One point I must disagree about is this: although both Iron Man and The Hulk were very good, neither is the "best comic book film of all time"... not even the past six months.

That honor goes to "The Dark Knight".

I think it is the whole secret ID thing.  It has been years but IIRC the majority of Marvel supers in the 70-80's had secret ID's that they had to protect.   For IM to reveal his identity screws the entire world view.  The same as if Batman's secret ID was known.

Once again I am reaching back into the stone age   but most of the Marvel movies are pulling from 70-80's storylines updated to modern times.  And back then most major Heroes had a Nemesis that was his opposite.  It was a genre thing..

Perhaps they meant  "best Marvel comic book film of all time"...

Personally I think they have been doing a bang up job with all the movies they have been crossing comics into Live Action.   The only one I really thought was stupid and unwatchable was the first Hulk by Ang Lee,.  Giant mutated poodle?!? Give me a break….

Oh and all the Batman movies that tortured us between 'Batman' (good) and 'The Dark Knight' (great).  A batsuit with nipples!!!  Arrrggghhhhhh!  Some things just cannot be un-watched or un-seen.

Re: Iron Man

Iron Monger is actually what kicked off the whole "Iron Wars" saga of the Iron Man comics.  In the book he was the military's version of the power armor using Stark's technologies they had found from a couple super villians.  The pilot when gonzo due to a neural interface problem, much the same as what happened with Rhodes who stood in for Stark as Iron Man when he was paralyzed (long story...). Stark eventually recovered due to technology and had to fight Rhodes...who went on to become Warmachine.
Anyhow....Iron Monger was equipped with a tactical nuke (wonders of the military mind) and he detonated it in the fight with Iron Man.  The event caused Stark to go on the warpath...tracking down and neutralizing every piece of Iron Man armor technology being used by both villians and superheroes...and for a time he was considered a rogue hero because of it by both the military and SHIELD. (I have the entire Iron Wars saga as I said) wink

Iron Monger was probably chosen for the COOL factor more than any of any othere of Iron Man's foes.  His actual arch enemy would be "The Mandrin" I believe.  Not a good choice given current relations between the US and China for the big screen. smile

Ooops...I think I've geeked myself here... tongue

Yeah...Classic Era Stark would NEVER have admitted he was Iron Man. Iron Man was supposed to be Stark's body guard.

..and Batman vs Joker isn't? especially in this last Bat-flick. Rich guy in a high tech suit vs a unemployed wack job with a (probably stolen) gun. I think it points out Hollywood's bias, as well as being only a thin veneer of mis-direction.

Ya gotta remember, it's ALL based on comic books.

Maybe, if you're a Hollywood 're-invention' fan. Just not a Batman fan. Being a "Silver Age" kinda guy, I like my comix closer to the Source. I haven't seen 'Dark Knight', just doesn't appeal to me.

Now, as an excercise for the audience, spot the double entendre...

..it ain't hard. smile

That post-dates my days as an avid reader of Iron Man, as I was involved in other things by '73...

I wouldn't actually give a crap if we pissed off the ChiComms...

Yeah, historically, the whole Yellow Peril thing was the pool from which IM's first foes were drawn. Mandarin was the baddest mo' fo' of them all.

There were TONS of one-shot bad guys. Stark's life was so melodramatic, they were almost a sideshow.

yes, yes you have....

It's all good, though. The board's FULL of them.

I am not one to automatically just like a movies because it is based on a comic, but I have to admit I liked the new Batman.  Now I would like it even better if they could shake off the pansification over the years.

Get back to the source and let Bat's have his .45's and blow the crooks away....

Woot!

You mean then, go back to his roots as an animal-costumed vague rip-off of The Shadow?
