Re: Just had to say this...

No, the White Sox are the team that always LOSES to Boston........LOL

Nahuris

Re: Just had to say this...

You know, you've got to really work hard to leave twelve men stranded on base, while only scoring twice. It takes dedication and commitment to get to that level of ineptitude.

But the most inconsistent strike zone I've ever witnessed makes things a little bit easier.

Yeah, I'm kidding. Growing up watching lots of baseball games means I know the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox.

One question, though...why sox? Is there some meaning thats blindingly obvious to you but not to the rest of the world?

The term "Sox" was used in newspaper headlines during the early days of baseball as a contraction for "Stockings". The actual name of the club at the time was the "Chicago White Stockings".

Quite a few of the older baseball teams have names taken from uniform colors:

Atlanta Braves (originally the Red Caps)

Baltimore Orioles (originally the Browns)

Boston Red Sox (Stockings)

Chicago Cubs (initially the White Stockings)

Chicage White Sox (took the Stockings name when the Cubs abandoned it)

Cincinnati Reds (Red Stockings, then the Reds, then the Redlegs -- 'cause they didn't want to to associate with Commies in the '50s -- then the Reds again)

Cleveland Indians (originally the Blues)

Detroit Tigers (blue and orange stripes)

Los Angeles Dodgers (at one time the Grays)

St. Louis Cardinals (originally the Browns; renamed for the red trim on their uniforms)

Re: Just had to say this...

Ah, an interesting fact. Thanks Dan...

Re: Just had to say this...

Freakin' Cubs

Well, there's always next year.

And the 99 after that... smile

But I can't really say much -- my White Stockings didn't exactly do the city proud, either.

Note to all sports fans out there: I'm now accepting cash money in exchange for NOT rooting for your team. So far in the baseball playoffs, I'm 3-11.

Re: Just had to say this...

Ouch...

Of course, if I jokingly say that your team will win, then they might win. Said four years ago that Greece would win 2004--a kind of anti-tip, really, as they hadn't won a single game in a major tournament. They went on to win, beating Portugal in the final...:)

Re: Just had to say this...

I sometimes wonder if my genetic composition is flawed somehow, I care not a Whit for athletic endeavours. I can understand the need for physical exertions in order to increase one's survival odds in war and excercising somewhat less to promote one's health, but the need for ongoing (seemingly pointless) competition simply to win cheesy bragging rights simply escapes me.

Oddly, I love wargaming....

I can also understand drinking for ones health, which sort of explains how long it took for me to type this...

Re: Just had to say this...

You should watch Rugby, then.

Re: Just had to say this...

Union or League?

Re: Just had to say this...

I'm a rugby N00b, so I don't even know what that means.

Re: Just had to say this...

You don't know the difference between the two? Well, just as good you've found me. I don't have a clue either, really. The main problem I keep having is which form has the set.

But after a quick check up with Wiki, rugby union is the form where five points are scored, two for a conversion and three points for a penalty kick.

Rugby League is where a set of five is carried out. This means that after five successful tackles, the attacking team must either kick the ball or risk going for a try. If they are tackled for a sixth time, the ball switches hands. A try is worth four points in this format, and a penalty is only worth two, but the conversion remains the same.

FYI, the Rugby World Cup is played by Union rules (i.e., no limits on the amount of tackles made)

Re: Just had to say this...

wow did I have a great reply before I closed the window...

anyway, it went something liek this.

All I know about sports you can fit into a small boy's shoe.  But I really like rugby and hockey.

Rugby is a great game where a bunch of enormous men shove their shoulders into each others butts while slightly enormous men wait for the ball to come squirting out the back. When it does, (sometimes it takes two or three attempts) they can only pass it backwards unless they kick it.  Once they get it all the way to the other side of the yard, they make points by throwing themselves at theground and hope nobody tries to break them in half along the way.  What's not to love!

Next time, on our show, Hockey!  Like a cross between soccer, football and an Irish wedding!

I hate baseball, but I am a cubs fan, so...

Go Cubs, Go Bears, Go Prairie Thunder, Go IRELAND!
