Re: Starmada as PBEM?

Still working on the update to Vassal... Here's a quick image showing how each ship has a property page for putting in stats and tracking damage. The stats were pasted directly from Shipyard v5.

I don't know why the image isn't showing anymore. It's here if anyone wants to see it: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/mj1 … %20Online/

Re: Starmada as PBEM?

Looking good. Is that window visible to all players, or just the owner? We'll have to decide on a method of indicating damage to weapons engines etc.

I am going to make it so the window can be masked. That means only the player who "owns" the piece can see it. But it will be an option for those who prefer to play with open books.

Yes, there would have to be some agreement for marking damage on the sheet in a uniform way. Unfortunately, I think this text sheet is the easiest way to get ship info into a vassal game. There are other ways but they would be kludgy and time-consuming, even if the end result would be prettier and more intuitive.

Re: Starmada as PBEM?

Just quickly, have you made any more progress on this recently?

Re: Starmada as PBEM?

Yes and no. I have added some more features but I have been toying with adding new fleet designs and stalled there. I hope to finish up a beta version over the next couple of weeks that I can put out there for people to look at and comment on.

I also have mostly compiled a document with suggestions on playing PBEM (how to signify damage, how to assign targets, etc.) with an eye both to using the Vassal version fully and speeding up email play.

I see I never contacted the Dugan about images...

Nope, not a peep from you...
smile

I have a few non-game-related things up in the air right now, but I've got some models that aren't claimed, and a few that Dan rejected that would be fine for lower resolution counters. Post me off list once you get to that point.

I'll ask Dan about some other models I have if we run out of stuff in the junk drawer... smile

Things to think about are the size of the counters and the amount of detail. If it's like 100x100, it's not really too critical from an art point of view, but just that it be decent and distinct in outline. You're not going to see surface texture at that resolution, and small details aren't going to be visible.

How many factions we talking about here?

...and no, I CAN'T seem to stay away even when I'm swamped. A guy HAS to have some downtime.... smile

Re: Starmada as PBEM?

Ah, 'private message rec'd'.....

Mail me, I can send you some samples...

Re: Starmada as PBEM?

I was bored the other day and so I sat down with the ADED rulebook and VASSAL with starmada 2.0. I set up a 1000pt battle between the ships given in the stuff.zip file.

I think that the "stuff" ships fall nicely into 2 fleets, and so I set up one side (orange) with 3 Anval class frigates, 1 Dagen class carrier and fighters, and one Wraak class Battlecruiser, and the other (Green) with 1 Conqueror class Battleship, 1 Victory Class Heavy Cruiser and 1 Orion class carrier and fighters.

It worked out as a good battle, although the Anvals were just about useless (engaging the Conqueror which blew up one and left another to float off the map with no engines) and the Wraak proving awesome (once in range it's heavy missiles decimated the Victory, scoring over 30 points of damage in 2 turns!). Overall the Green side won, despite the Wraak putting up a good fight.

I saved the setup, and posted it over at the yahoo group (Files > Vassal Online > VASSAL scenarios ). I'd be interested to see if anyone else has the same outcome.

Re: Starmada as PBEM?

Sounds fun!

A tiny update on 'progress': Dugan has agreed to help produce some fleets. He sent me some sample ships which look awesome! I haven't had much time to hammer out the module but will definitely have more time in January, once my semester and the holidays are over.

Lsutehall? Would you be interested in some playtest games in January?

I wouldn't say awesome, just shippy things.... tongue

You need to send me an outline as to what ships you want/need, so I can organize them and fill in empty slots in the 'fleets'.
