Topic: Ranks Contest!

Since ranks are determined by the number of posts, and there's apparently a super-secret formula for how to determine who gets which rank, I've decided to start a contest to determine exactly how Dan determined the breaking points for the ranks.

please submit to this thread your guesses, educated or otherwise, and we'll figure out a suitable reward at a later date, the contest ends at 11:59 pm 1/9/2008.

That is all.

Re: Ranks Contest!

It was pretty easy to figure out. The break points are at N^2 * 10 posts (10,40,90,160,250,360,490,640,810,1000)

Re: Ranks Contest!

A winner!

Give that man a cookie!

Re: Ranks Contest!

If it's that simple, then eventually everyone would be an Admiral.

I'm thinking that it ought to be a "percentage of the total forum posts" or some such...

Re: Ranks Contest!

the contest wasn't about what it SHOULD be, but what it IS

Yeah...I'm not asking for a prize, just making a comment.

Re: Ranks Contest!

Just like a dictatorship, though, where everyone gets really impressive titles like Grand High Imperial Admiral when all they command is a fishing boat...:)

Re: Ranks Contest!

What type of cookie do I get?

Oddly, i was able to intuit that answer.... lol

Re: Ranks Contest!

Not Everyone will eventually make admiral because some will always wander off or otherwise become less active. Some may lurk mostly and others still will just have nothing to add to many conversations. It reminds me of a professor I had that based your entire "class participation" grade on the total number of times you spoke up or asked a question and did not take into account the intelligence of said comment, question or concern.
Besides, Dan can always alter the formula (something tells me this one is just too simple for him anyway!  big_smile ) so that the boards to dot become to top heavy with Brass.
Cheers,

(who is still a mere plebe)

Re: Ranks Contest!

An working example of the nearest upper reply. You can always say absolutely nothing with a lot of words added in a perfectly logic progression and even cream up the thing a bit further by applying some fancy wording like perfect consistency of the before explained and the weight carried by supra cited and so on.

One more post on the pocket, one more point earned, one more step to reach the next rank!

Re: Ranks Contest!

Does anyone really care what rank gets awarded them by an internet forum?

As far as I know, it incurs no additional responsibility, nor any  privilege.  It's meaningless window dressing that may actually serve to cheapen the site overall, by causing competition over who makes more posts, which may serve to dilute the actual relevance of a topic.

Yeah, but it's meaningless window dressing with pretty badges! wink

Hasn't history shown that the more Admirals/Generals/whatever, the more efficient the fighting force?

True, as long as Dan's happy with my submissions to the ongoing effort, I really don't give a rat's patootie....

I was fine with "MJ12 Lackey" - "Rear Admiral" got my funnybone going....

Sure, just look and see how tough the lead units in Warhammer are!

Yeah, sure, and the side with the prettiest uniforms always reigns supreme on the field of battle!

Re: Ranks Contest!

I always liked the leaders in Squad Leader who had the positive modifiers (negative was good).

Re: Ranks Contest!

How efficient is a force with all officers and no enlisted members either?

Ask Gene Roddenberry....

lol

Re: Ranks Contest!

There is one thing that's worring me and not letting me sleep...  sad

Really.

So we have at nineteen hundreed and something an Admiral of the Fleet. And then?

A supreme admiral?  smile

A mega astounding admiral?  lol

A huge powerful bright star admiral?  :x

If post are + infinite, how will we name all the ranking positions?

Can't sleep wondering about this...  neutral
Just can´t.

Re: Ranks Contest!

Don't make me put a limit on the number of smilies allowed in a single post... smile

And then... nothing.

That's it.

Doesn't go higher than Fleet Admiral... and if you think I got this rank because of my number of posts, you'd be mistaken. There are benefits to being the Administrator.

Re: Ranks Contest!

The only way to outrank Dan is after a chili eating contest!

And maybe not even then...since I've never been to a chili eating contest with Dan.  lol
