Will you be my valentine?
No.
meh. Bah. Humbug.
"Valentine's Day" is just another "women's holiday" designed to get us to buy more crap....it's not based on some victory in war, celebrating some figure that did something important, or something else historically significant.
The only victory it marks is that of marketing tripe over common sense.....
I can't think of anything I'd rather celebrate than love, my friend.
And, frankly, I'm happy to let my wife of 21 years know that.
I'm not even gonna touch "Women's Holiday".

I'm wholeheartedly in favor of celebrating love - it's just that I'd rather pick a time and method of my own choosing, rather than allow some marketing group to decide for me.
We'll be celebrating our 21st anniversary this March....

I agree completely.
But, and I say this with all due respect... and with the understanding that I include myself...
Would we really ever get around to "celebrating" love if we weren't forced to once in a while?
(Of course, I just managed to get past anniversary no.2, so I'm still new at this.)

Well...I know that for the most part I have little use for any holiday anymore. Mainly because it has become an expectation rather than a sharing of regards...pushed by the mass media, etc.
I show my wife I love her in lots of little ways on spurs of the moment. Bringing her home her favorite treat, a spontaneous trip to a favorite spot or restaurant, or being evil and tickling her at the odd moment  (what makes this evil is that I'm completely not ticklish in the least)...
I don't need a box of overpriced chocolates, half dead flowers (spruced up to look new...common trick by florists to get rid of old stock first), and/or some card written with worn out tripe...*shrug*
Don't worry Dan, if you can survive the "wife's questions of doom", you're doing good so far.

That's what anniversaries are for, my friend!
I understand Jim's sentiment, I just get tired of all the commercialisation(SP?) that accompanies the common holidays...Valentines seems to get worse every year, they've already got Easter junk up, and I'm betting we'll be seeing something to do with July Forth before the middle of spring....

Yeah, it's the hugs when she's down, the warm tea when she's tired, the backrubs when her back aches.
That's the love part.
