Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

Thanks Dan for the clarification. The cool thing about directional/ablative shielding is that, once rules are developed, it could be used in all Starmada settings and seems to be one of the things missing to represent how some shields work in various sci-fi settings. Dan, would it be possible to post what you are thinking in regards to shields just so you could get some feed back and playtesting early on??
While FC and SFB are good games, I like the "simplicity" of Starmada and the ability to build ships from anything you can think of......something that hasn't been done "officially" in the other systems..

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

My 2 cents...

Trying to keep the simplicity of starmada but the feel of SFB, here is what id like to see.

Directional/Ablative shielding
1, 2 and 3 turn arming cycles.  (disruptor, photon, plasma)
Strikers that disipate their damage as they move.
Multi-mode weapons - standard (normal damage), overload (double damage, limited range), proximity (half damage, more accurate).

I like the simple move and shoot starmada movement system, but the impulse movement of SFB allows for alot of move-shoot-move tactics.   One way to address this would be to add a weapons fire order to the movement plot.  Move 3 forward, turn left, Fire Primary, Move Two.   Obviously you could only fire if your target was still in arc at that point in your movement.

Another thought is ploted arming for multi-mode weapons.   At the beginning of each turn that a multi-mode weapon is ready to fire you have to plot its mode.   That way you cant toggle between overload and standard if the situation changes after movement.

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

If Dan does post some thoughts on shields, I could see playtesting right away to give him feedback to at least either confirm or ruleout possibilities.

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

I look forward to the ablative-armor type of shielding.  I will use it on my ships and think of it as armor plating; similiar to the polarized armor that the Earth Starship Enterprise has on the StarTrek-prequil TV show "Enterprise".
I wonder, do ships with this ablative-armor type of shielding can also have regular Starmada shields or Starmada screens? :?

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

In the SAE edition, I don't think we have seen either ablative armor or ablative shielding.

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

Dan,
any tidbits you could drop on shields in KA that we could start tossing around??
I like the idea of each arc having a certain number of damage points that can be absorbed before damage drops that shield. Of course, shield reinforcement, damage repairs, etc.  could all find their way into this.

I am sure there will be some weapons, like ion, weapons that could ignore shields until you factor that defensive technology into it.  I assume that their will be different strength levels.
The shields of Dreadnought will be able to absorb more than a  Heavy Cruiser.

oh wink look for an order from me later tonight or tomorrow on mj12

I'd wager that ADB and Steve Cole will want first crack at that.....

For what it's worth, I have to have something ready for public consumption by the end of May, because we're testing the rules at DieCon...

I have a group itching to playtest and be humbled to do so if you would like to include me..

Duly noted... I will certainly be putting out a call for playtesters when we get to that point.

We are getting close to "the end of May," anything brewing??

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

My friends and I are playing here in Jacksonville almost every week.  I would be glad to also serve as a play-tester for these new KA shield rules.  :ugeek:

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

Dan,
are you ready for other groups to do some playtesting yet? big_smile

Just a quick question, I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but will KA have any new rules at all, or is it purely a "setting" sourcebook utilizing only existing SAE rules?
Thanks,
Erik

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

I am pulling out some old games that don't exist anymore to see how they do it.

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

I have been looking through various rules for ablative armor and ablative shields. A lot of systems seem to assign a value to each arc...a damage track, each successful hit on a shield or armour knocks a box off. When boxes are gone, that shield or armor track/arc is gone.

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

Dan, any luck compiling?  lol

I've had other ... issues ... come up. It really sucks when Real Life intrudes on our escapism. sad

Hopefully, things will return to some sense of normalcy in the near future.

Re: Klingon Armada- Starmada vs FC/SFB rules

IMHO when all shield hits are scored they should first be taken from the shield that was hit. That is what happens in Fed Com.

I also think you should not copy Fed Com. Completely the one of the main draws of Starmada is the Weapon traits, if you just want a beam attack with no fluff you have Full Thrust. With Starmada you can have so much more then vanilla weapons. Why not make Disruptors "repeating" or Photons "slow firing" and "double damage"?

I think you should talk to some people and at Star Fleet and see what they think.

Spice things up a bit that's what I think...........................................Doug
