Topic: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

I just bought a Mac (which sucks just as much as Windows, but for 4 times the price...) and I also got Mac Office. Now, when I try to run the Excel builder every time I enter in a value it takes like 5 seconds to get a response. For instance, if for range I click on the '12' value it will take about 5 seconds to register.

What's going on?

As a mac user, I might be able to help a little. Have  you run the builit in Microsoft Update?
Just open Word and there will be a menu option to update.  Keep running it until no more updates are found.   If you have an older version, newer updates fixed many issues.
Also, make sure you run Apple Software update (from the apple menu in corner) until no more updates are available.

Also (assuming your running Mac OS 10.5.x), I recommend this book for all mac users:

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

I will second the update response. Absolutely everything was wonky when I first got office for my Mac, but after installing the updates everything (seems) to run fine. You may have to tweak a few preferences as well as for some reason Excel in particular has the most annoyances as the defaults.
Cheers,
Erik

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Thanks for your help.

I updated everything as suggested but I still have the same problem. What is really weird is that the problem only occurs with the SAE builder. The older S:X builder runs fine for instance.

Sometimes next week I will install Windows with Bootcamp. Most of the stuff I have ported over doesn't work anyways, so I need Windows.

I still think that Windows-based computers are POS, and Macs are expensive POS. If I had both the PC guy and the Mac guy from the Mac adds in front of me I would shoot them both in the head   The day the Japanese will come out with simple and reliable computers they will do to that market what they did to the U.S. auto industry.

In the meantime I'll use my GF's laptop to do my SAE designs.

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Are you using Microsoft Office 2008 or 2004??

Try this, goto Disk Utility, Select the top image of your HD, chose repair permissions, and restart your machine and see if that makes any difference.

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Thanks for the tip.

I tried repair permissions but the file hasn't changed. I am using Mac Office 2008 (a legit copy; cost me $160...)

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Have you tried using Open Office? Listed as running on an Apple Mac as well as windows PCs and the latest version should run the builder without problem.
You can find it at OpenOffice.org and it is a bit cheaper then Mac Office, $0.00 (free).

The latest version I tried of open office gave my Mac fits (mostly very odd random copying and bizarro formating problems) but works fine on my wife's windows laptop.
My wife convinced me to buy a Mac...which I'm paying for...and she hogs it most of the time while I huddle in the corner with the old laptop...from what I hear I have a fairly typical marriage  lol
Cheers,
Erik

Yes, yes it is...

My solution was to build HER one that's got all the bells and whistles (yeah, it's windo$e), then build my own windo$e machine and install mostly free/opensource software. My son's E-Machine is only 2 years older, was cheaper to buy outright, and is even MORE capable.

We all share the DSL modem, one day I'll figure out how to get all the OS's to talk to each other via our network.....

No laptops yet.

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Thank you for suggesting Open Office. I just installed it and I ran the SAE builder and it seems to work fine. I wish I had know about Open Office BEFORE wasting $160 on (yet) another flawed MS product.

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Just for the record, I can verify the odd behavior on my mac. It takes about 5 seconds.

If you look down at the bottom, when you select the value, you see a message that says "calculating cells"

Does the calculation happy faster for the windows version??

What version of Excel was this created in??

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

Mac Office just updated to SP2. You might give that a shot.
I found that iwork didn't work because something wasn't supported.

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

I would be interested, since SP2 says it made calculations faster, if this helps your problem.

Re: SAE builder and Mac Office ...?

ATTN:

Running the 12.2.0 updater and THEN the 12.2.1 updater FIXED the slow calculation issue in Excel 2008!!
