Topic: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

Hello everyone,
I am traveling down to southern Florida again. My gaming friends and I are playing Starmada Monday June22nd at
The Adventure Game Store owned by Gaming Glenn in Davie, Fla near Fort Lauderdale. We are playing at 1 pm.
Everyone is welcome. We will have convoy vs raider battles, fights over a planet, etc. We always have a blast when we play.   8-)
Bring your designs. The only restrictions we have is that we don't use ammo/expendables, and we don't use Piercing +3.
(However Piercing +1 & +2 are fine)

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

We played several games and came to a conclusion, Higher tech sometimes makes the game seem a little unbalanced.    We used tech = +1.  My nephew's ships had Invered rate of fire, and Piercing +2.  Their the long range firepower was so devestating that my side was so ravaged in one turn of fire that when we got to medium range our ships were wrecked.
The only alternative was to fight in an asteriod field every time.   My nephew is very creative and resourseful.  The fleets that Gaming Glenn & I used were pulverized.  Hopefully, using max Tech = Zero will change that.  We will probably play in early August when I go down to S. Fla. again... 8-)

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

Why not just use the "basic" Starmada Rules?

Max range 18
Piercing is only +1
The old firing arcs
ect....

Your nephew's ships are pretty hard to handle maybe house rule “Only one trait per weapon .”

Is your nephew still using screens?

If so, come on cloaked, with a very fast ship I am talking 20 speed, have all your weapons facing the rear arcs make them all slow firing. Turn two uncloak: use your speed to get behind your nephew then blast him with all your weapons in a massive alpha strike. Then cloak. Wash, Rinse and Repeat.

He probably has very little facing his rear and side arcs so you just uncloak where he doesn't expect you.

Just playing you your father and your Nephew last week I have learned that Piercing +3 is pretty broken my 5 rated shields were as if there were not even there. I did manage to take out your father but his screens were only a 2.

Good luck…………………..Doug

fighters fighters fighters fighters

unless you don't do fighters, I can't remember your house rules.

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

We do use fighters and drones (=strikers)  I launched 8 flights of 8 drones (64 drones)  My nephew's AA ships with no whields and stealth shot all of them down in turns.  They eveh had level 1 shields.  Fighters would be massacred in our fights.  Perhaps not now, but the few times Gaming Glenn brought fighters before, they were shot up badly and accomplished little.  He shot down 64 seekers, and then still whopped on us.  Inverted rate of fire is BRUTAL!!!!!

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

It seems to me that all the "inverted" weapon traits are brutal. They also make less sense to me than most of the other weapon traits. But that's just me. smile

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

Even more brutal, as his group playes with 30" range, if they played with a maximum range of 18 then fast ships can get closer and negate the inverted stuff.

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

Doesn't stealth help to negate the inverted traits? Just a thought. I haven't played with range 30 weapons but it seems to me to seriously complicate planning for a battle and doesn't sound fun.

Actually, stealth is a mixed blessing with inverted traits... it prevents attacks at long range, but makes attacks at short/medium range that much more deadly.

Oh, right, because medium range is considered long range... I forgot about that. Yeah, not the easy fix I was hoping for, then.  wink

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

All these ideas are interesting, but we do like the weapons being able to shoot out to 30 hexes.  It does make fighters and even strikers sort of obsolete.
I think that limiting all tech to a maximum of zero will help.  My BBs have grown from 13 hull to 25 hull, they are now only speed 5 instead of speed 8.  Also their firepower is reduced by about one third.  They still have 10 screens.  The cost has gone up from 656 to 700.  This will work I think.

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

I don't think it will help much by slowing down your ship, how about making smaller ships using countermeasures, and evasive actions to get your ships in close? Then all the points he paid for inverted ROF will be for nothing. That will give you a -3 to be hit or -4 at long range if you have a REAL fast ship it could be a -5 to be hit at long range.

I think against your nephew's ships speed will be your biggest asset instead of trying to slug it out at long or medium range.

That was my only complaint about the games I played with you guys, no one ever got in close, all combat took place at long to med range I like a bit a maneuver when playing starship games that's why I am also interested in Fed Com for one on one games.

Re: We are playing Starmada in S. Fla Sun. 6/22

Another thing my Uncle didn't mention was that my Battleships had Range Based ROF, thus while getting close would allow him to evade my satelites, my Battleships would be quite happy with the end result.

The Tech 0 thing seems to have worked, my satelites got NERFED worse than a WoW boss a week after coming out, and its alot harder to fit a crap load of stuff on. Time will tell if this works (I still miss repeating...).
